02WHETHER IT WAS CREATING WORLD PEACE OR A WORLD-FAMOUS WORK OF ART, SOME OF HISTORY’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT BY LEGENDARY MEN AND WOMEN, EQUALLY RENOWN FOR THE AMOUNT THEY DRANK. HERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT FIVE OF THESE INEBRIATED ICONS.

Vincent van Gogh Who: One of the greatest painters in history

Drink of choice: Absinthe

Fact or Fiction: Absinthe is believed to cause a drinker to see a yellow hue around objects, one of the trademark characteristics of Van Gogh’s paintings.

This Dutch Post-Impressionist painter is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art and his work is sold for millions all over the world. During the 37 years he was alive however, he constantly consumed absinthe which lead to delirium and hallucinations. He would paint outdoors at night with a candle on his hat, he was known to eat paint and drink turpentine, and he once cut off a portion of his ear and left it at a brothel for a girl named Rachel telling her to “keep this object like a treasure”. He was sent to an asylum and eventually died of a gunshot wound – there is some mystery as to whether it was suicide or murder.

Vincent Van Gogh cocktail

20ml absinthe

10ml Chambord liqueur

5ml lemon juice

15ml cranberry juice

Shake and strain into a large shot glass.

Dorothy ParkerWho: American poet and writer

Drink of choice: Martini

Quote:"I like to have a martini, two at the very most. After three I'm under the table, after four I'm under my host."

She was nominated for two Academy awards (A Star is Born in 1937 and Smash-Up, the Story of a Woman in 1947) for her screenplays, wrote numerous books of poetry and is one of the most frequently quoted writers of all time. Famous for her wit, wisecracks and eye for 20th-century urban foibles, this American literary maven was equally renown for being a scofflaw – one of the many Americans who enjoyed a drink or two in New York's numerous speakeasies during Prohibition.

Whilst working as a theatre critic for Vanity Fair, she became friends with Robert Benchley and Robert E. Sherwood and the three of them began lunching together at the Algonquin Hotel in Manhattan, founding the infamous group of wise-crackers and acerbic literary types known as the Algonquin Round Table. By night, you would find her at speakeasies drinking and cracking jokes with the likes of Ernest Hemingway, F Scott Fitzgerald and Harpo Marx. So famous is she for her drinking, that entire cocktail guides have been dedicated to her legacy.

Dorothy Parker Cocktail

60 ml Tanqueray gin

12 ml Chambord liqueur

15 ml hibiscus syrup

15 ml fresh lemon juice

Soda water

Sir Winston ChurchillWho: British Prime Minister during World War II and Statesman

Drink of choice: Whiskey

Quote:“I may be drunk Miss, but in the morning I will be sober, and you will still be ugly.”

“I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.”

His inspirational leadership, that rallied the British people and led his country from the brink of defeat by the Nazis to victory in World War II, earned Sir Winston Churchill the title of greatest Briton of all time. He’s also known as one of the greatest drinkers of all time.

Rarely seen without a glass of whiskey in hand and cigar in mouth, legend has it that upon one arrival at the White House, he told the butler, “I must have a tumbler of sherry in my room before breakfast, a couple of glasses of scotch and soda before lunch, and Champagne and 90-year-old brandies before I go to sleep at night.”

Some historians believe that his alcoholic excesses were more of a myth, kept alive by Churchill himself to bolster his reputation as a leader that could hold his liquor. Regardless of his drinking habits, he managed to live 90 years and in that time survived the frontlines of Cuba, India, Sudan and South Africa, played key roles in both world wars, served two terms as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and won a Nobel Prize for Literature.

A Churchill Martini

90 ml Bombay Sapphire gin

Pour gin over ice into a mixing glass. Stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with an olive.

Ernest HemingwayWho: American Novelist and journalist

Drink of choice: Anything

Quote: “Write drunk. Edit sober.”

Ernest Hemingway was the man’s man of literature and did nothing by halves. Aside from publishing 19 books and winning a Nobel Prize for Literature, he married 4 times, survived 2 plane crashes, drank with Benito Mussolini, had a punch up with Orson Welles (followed by a bonding drinking session), shot himself in both legs while trying to sink a Mako Shark, pulled 227 shrapnel fragments out of his leg after being wounded in World War I and downed 17 double daiquiris at famed El Floridita in Cuba in a single session. Whether it was bull fighting in Spain or hunting big game in Africa, his incredible adventures were always fuelled by alcohol.

Sadly the physical and emotional scars that he accumulated during his extraordinary life became too much for him and in 1961, he wrote the last chapter of his life by committing suicide.

The Hemingway Daiquiri

(also known as The Papa Doble and Hemingway Doble)

45 ml Bacardi rum

15 ml fresh squeezed lime juice

22ml maraschino liqueur

30 ml grapefruit juice

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

CleopatraWho: Last Egyptian Pharaoh

What: Greek muscat wine

Fact or Fiction: used to regularly bathe in wine

One of the most famous female rulers in history, Cleopatra was the product of incest, had a hand in the deaths of three of her siblings, spoke a dozen languages, was educated in mathematics, philosophy, oratory and astronomy, and proclaimed herself as the reincarnation of the goddess Isis.

Through her love affair with Julius Caesar, she managed to claim the Egyptian throne from her brother (and husband) Ptolemy XIII. After bearing Caesar a son, she followed him to Rome, but fled after he was assassinated. She was summoned back to Rome by the new Roman leader, Marc Antony, who wanted to question her about her allegiance. And it was then that their great love affair and mutual love of drinking began.

Living a life of leisure and excess in Egypt, they formed their own drinking society known as the ‘Inimitable Livers’, engaging in nightly feasts, wine-binges, elaborate games and contests. Legend has it that in one of these competitions, Cleopatra bet Antony that she could spend ‘10,000,000 sesterces’ (equivalent to $20 million in modern currency) on one dinner. After enjoying a very conventional meal, Cleopatra dropped one of her priceless pearl earrings into a strong vinegar solution, waited for it to dissolve into slush, and then drank it. After Marc Antony died, the new Roman leader threatened to take her back to Rome as a war trophy. But before he could claim her, she died of intoxication – not from alcohol – but from snake poison.

Pioneering Australian Sparkling since the 1890sFounded in 1851, Seppelt is one of Australia’s most historic and pioneering wine producers, specialising in wines that express the unique personalities of some of Victoria’s finest vineyards.

Not only has Seppelt built a reputation for crafting some of the country’s most lauded table wines such as the flagship Seppelt St Peters Grampians Shiraz and Seppelt Drumborg Vineyard Riesling, it also has a rich heritage in sparkling wine.

A true pioneer in Australia, Seppelt first began making sparkling wine in the 1890s and has more experience with the style than any other winemaker in the country. Around the same time Seppelt pioneered Sparkling Shiraz – a uniquely Australian wine style for which Seppelt expressions are often revered as the benchmark.

Seppelt’s century-old sparkling tradition dates back to 1890 when then owner Hans Irvine employed French Champagne winemaker Charles Pierlot to craft some of Australia’s first Traditional Method sparkling wines. A colourful character, Pierlot learnt the art of Champagne making at the houses of Pommery & Greno and Moet & Chandon. Together, Irvine and Pierlot developed an award-winning wine

business and their wines quickly gained a loyal following. Since then, an enduring dedication to sparkling excellence has been passed down by generations of winemakers at Seppelt. This legacy continues today under the leadership of Seppelt Senior Winemaker Adam Carnaby.

Since the release of the 1983 vintage in 1986, Seppelt’s finest sparkling white wines have borne the name of Pierlot’s wife, Ellena Salinger. Available in vintage and non-vintage styles, Seppelt Salinger sparkling wines are made using the traditional sparkling varieties of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.

The first release of the non-vintage expression, Seppelt Salinger Premium Cuvée NV, was in 2011. Made from grapes sourced from some of Australia’s best cool climate sparkling regions – including Adelaide Hills, Tumbarumba, Henty and the Yarra Valley - it is a delicate, dry sparkling wine made to a consistent Seppelt house style.

Seppelt Senior Winemaker Adam Carnaby said that the Seppelt Salinger Premium Cuvée NV is a wine of great finesse and balance, with a fine bead, luscious creamy mouth-feel and a crisp finish.

It leads the way for Cricketers Arms as the spearhead of our range.

DE BORTOLI KING VALLEY PROSECCOOver the past few years Prosecco has taken the world by storm.

The King Valley is Australia’s natural home for Prosecco due to its ideal climate and breathtaking scenery at the base of Victoria’s snowfields.

What they sayDRINKZ saves the awkward conversation about whose shout it is next by keeping track of everyone’s shout, in sequential order. SOFI SPRITZAS FEATURED ON CHANNEL 10’S SHARK TANK!

Sofi Spritz is an all-Australian wine spritz inspired by the Italian-style of Aperitivo. Made to classic recipes with a South Australian Riesling base, Sofi has a crisp refreshing finish, due to its all-natural ingredients, higher content of sparkling water and no added sugars. Perfectly balanced with citrus and herbal extracts, it quenches the thirst with its bitter sweet twist.

Sofi Blood orange & bitters is an all Australian take on the classic Italian Veneto spritz wine cocktail. Blood Orange and bitter served over Riesling with a dash of sparkling water gives a bitter-sweet taste and a crisp, refreshing finish, best enjoyed with a slice of citrus over ice or straight from the chilled bottle.

So, to bring a little classic Italian style to your summer, pick up a Sofi and enjoy what we like to regard as the perfect ‘sundowner’

HARDY’S TINTARA GEOLOGYThe McLaren Vale region is famous for being one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world.

From an altitude of 50 up to 200 metres, the vineyards are planted on an array of soils including fertile red-brown earths, terra rossa, rendzina, soft sands and dark cracking clays. Some of these soils are as old as 600 million years.

It is from these diverse soils that Hardy’s Tintara’s winemakers source grapes that allow them to blend wines with complexity, concentration and character that reflect this unique maritime climate and geology.

The ability to take grapes from multiple sites and soils provides our winemakers with a broad palette of flavours, structure and styles to craft a unique expression for the new Hardy’s Tintara Geology range.

SOVINO SUMMER 201618

Page 21: FREE MAG - Local Liquor€¦ · wrote the last chapter of his life by committing suicide. The Hemingway Daiquiri (also known as The Papa Doble and Hemingway Doble) 45 ml Bacardi rum

01Captain Cook carried cider on his ships to treat his crew for scurvy.

02In the 19th century, cider was advertised as a cure for gout and other illnesses.

03At one time, 365 different varieties of cider apples were grown. Today over 100 different varieties are grown.

04Back in the 14th century, children were baptised in cider as it was often more sanitary than water.

THE BRIGHT CIDER LIFE THE AUSTRALIAN ALCOHOL PALATE IS CHANGING.

Whilst beer is still a long-term fixture, cider is becoming the new apple of the drinker’s eye and is one of the fastest-growing categories of alcoholic beverages. So in tribute to the rising popularity of this age-old beverage, here are a few facts that you can use to entertain your friends next time you share a glass of the good stuff:

05

In early medieval times in Britain, the tradition of ‘wassailing’ apple orchards involved reciting incantations and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year.

06

The best cider apples have the best names: Hangdown, Chibble's Wilding, Kentish Fill-Basket, and Glory of the West.

07

When Caesar and his invading soldiers stormed through England in 55 BC, they found Celts sipping a brew made from crab apples. The troops were quick to pick up the habit and take it back to Rome.

08

Other fruits can be used to make ‘cider-like’ drinks: Perry comes from fermented pear juice, cyser is cider fermented with honey, and, according to legend, plum jerkum – made from plums – leaves "the head clear, while paralysing the legs."

09

Cider apples make great cider. But if you bite into one, it will taste bitter and dry.

10From the 1600s to the 1800s, Cider was the most popular drink in England and North America and many British estate owners would include four pints of cider a day as part of their farm workers’ wages.

11The temperance movement, which began in the 1820s and preached abstinence from alcohol, killed the cider business. Fired up by speeches from ministers and politicians, many farmers destroyed their "demon orchards," sparing only the trees used for sweet juice.

12

It takes about 40 pieces of fruit to make 4 litres of the good stuff.

13

When the UK was at war with their main wine suppliers like France and Portugal, the English would drink Perry (cider made from pears) as a substitute for champagne.

14

Cider is popular in Spain, especially in the Basque region in Asturias, where they drink more cider per capita than anywhere else in the world.

15

On November 18th 1307, the legendary William Tell shot an apple from the top of his son’s head. November 18th is now National Apple Cider Day.

16

Cider is equally enjoyed by men and women, but women drink half the volume of men.
