Fras-le at the 13 th Brake Colloquium Engineering teams from Fras-le and Master presented projects and technical papers during the 13th International Brake Colloquium and Engineering Exhibition, held in Caixas do Sul on May 24 and 25. The meeting brought together experts, exhibitors, professionals and students from the field of brakes to share knowledge about new technologies in the segment worldwide. Selected as Best Paper of the event was “Structural validation of a pneumatic brake actuator using methods for high cycle fatigue life calculations”, by Master, together with UFRGS and Dassault Systèmes Simulia. It deals with a computational simulation method to evaluate fatigue in pneumatic brake actuators subjected to vibration, in order to develop sturdier, lower cost components. Master also presented a paper on the methodology for defining automatic slack adjusters taking into account wheel brake characteristics, in partnership with the Ford Motor Company, aimed at finding the right choice of brake adjusters for better brake performance over the life of the product. Fras-le participated in the Colloquium with three papers: Distribution of contact pressure at the friction interface of brake drum systems, enabling the development of friction materials with less wear and high braking performance; Methodology for defining automatic slack adjusters taking into account wheel brake characteristics, done together with Master and Ford; and Study of temperature reduction efficiency in automobile brake discs through forced convection, in collaboration with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and the Federal Institute of Northern Minas Gerais (IFNMG), in order to improve brake cooling, reduce operating temperatures and enhance braking efficiency. During the event, the participants had the opportunity to visit Randon Proving Grounds where they participated in a test-drive on its 15 kilometers of 18 different outdoor tracks.
