Preface

Physical Aromatic Touch (P.A.T.)™

The Physical Aromatic Touch (P.A.T.) program is an astonishingly simple and effective holistic therapy allowing the body’s energy systems to resynchronize and operate as nature intended. In our bodies, every system, cell, and atom is in constant communication with each other at all times. This communication system is called the energetic field of the body and it processes over 400 million impulses per second.Through exposure to the stresses of day-to-day life, these lines of communication can become compromised or disconnected, which leads to a decline in physical, emotional and/or mental well-being. Reconnecting these lines of communication enables the body’s internal mechanisms to function at optimal levels, repairing and preventing disease while rapidly accelerating the healing process. Utilizing this communication network within our bodies, P.A.T., with the use of select essential oils, stimulates the body’s innate ability to balance and heal itself on all levels.Did you know each of the 100 trillion cells in your body share one key feature with the cells of tigers, bumblebees, and persimmons, a feature that most bacteria and protists lack? Your cells touch and communicate with one another. Sending and receiving a variety of chemical signals, the cells coordinate their behavior so your body functions as an integrated whole, rather than as a massive collection of individual cells acting independently.

The ability of cells to communicate with one another is the hallmark of multicellular organisms. Cells in a multicellular organism communicate with others by releasing signal molecules, which then bind to receptor proteins on the surface of other cells. Recent advances in protein isolation have yielded a wealth of information about the structure and function of these proteins. What once was a theory is now being scientifically proven.

This brings us to Physical Aromatic Touch (P.A.T.) and what it can do for the human body. P.A.T. was developed along the theory that the body speaks volumes if you are listening. In other words, the essential oils ask the body questions and the body records these answers in unique body talk, manifesting as a reduction of pain or an increase in mobility.

We have to dip into the scientific world to fully understand this process. In that world, body talk is called cellular signaling. It is a complex system of communication covering basic cellular activity and coordinating cell actions. The ability of the cell to perceive and correctly respond to its micro-environment is the very basis of development, tissue repair, and immunity, as well as normal tissue homeostasis. Errors and cellular information processing are responsible for diseases such as cancer, autoimmune diseases, and diabetes. Through an understanding on cellular communication, treatment of diseases may be more effective with essential oils that improve this method signaling.

HOMEOsTAsIs: a relatively stable state of equilibrium or a tendency toward such a state between the different but interdependent elements or groups of elements of an organism, population, or group.

Cell-to-Cell communication is absolutely essential for multicellular organisms like human beings. The billions of cells in the human body must communicate in order to develop from a fertilized egg, and then survive and reproduce in turn. Communication among cells is also important for many unicellular organisms that must locate food, find a mate, and ultimately survive. The signals received by cells take various forms, whether they originate from another cell, from changes in the cell, or an organism’s physical surroundings.Cells can sense and respond to electromagnetic signals such as lights, vibrations, and frequencies, as well as chemical signals like hormones. This is why essential oils are so powerful; not only do they have the electromagnetic signaling, they also have a chemical signal which has been referred to as secondary messenger molecules. This is what gives them the advantage over synthetic drugs which do not have the capacity to create either.Studies of cellular signaling help to answer some of the most important questions in biology and medicine in areas ranging from embryological development, to form and action, and the development of cancer and other kinds of diseases. For a deeper understanding of cellular communication, turn to the Structural Guide which explains the three stages of cell signaling.Research helps us to understand the underlying structure of the cellular signaling network, and how changes in these networks may affect the transmission and flow of information. Such networks are complex systems within their own organization and are ultra-sensitive. Cell communication may also occur between the cells of two different organisms. Bacteria

have the ability to exchange signals with each other, with the human epithelial, and with immune system cells. This ability to communicate between cells is what makes nature so complex, but we don’t have to be equally complex.

Plant and human cells, no matter their function, interact with the environment, including the cells around them. Adjacent cells can signal others by direct contact, while nearby cells that are not touching are able to communicate by paracrine signals. Two other systems mediate communication over longer distances. With endocrine signaling, the blood carries hormones to distant cells. With synaptic signaling, nerve cells secrete neurotransmitters from long cellular extensions close to the responding cells.

DIRECT CONTACT

Cellular communication can require direct cell-to-cell contact called juxtacrine signaling. When cells are very close to one another, some of the molecules on the cell’s plasma membranes may bind together in specific ways. Many of the important interactions between cells in early development occur by means of direct contact between cell surfaces.

PARACRINE sIGNALING

Signal molecules released by cells can diffuse through the extracellular fluid to other cells. If those molecules are taken up by neighboring cells, destroyed by extracellular enzymes, or removed from the extracellular fluid in another way, their influence is restricted to cells in the immediate vicinity of the releasing cells. Signals with such short-lived, local effectsarecalledparacrinesignals.Likedirectcontact, paracrine signaling plays an important role in early development, coordinating the activities of clusters of neighboring cells.

ENDOCRINE sIGNALING

If a released signal molecule remains in the extracellular fluid, it may enter the organism’s circulatory system and travel widely throughout the body. These longer-

lived signal molecules, which may affect cells very distant from the releasing cells, are called hormones. This type of intercellular communication is known as endocrine signaling. Both animals and plants use this signaling mechanism extensively.

sYNAPTIC sIGNALING

In animals, the cells of the nervous system provide rapid communication with distant cells. Their signal molecules, called neurotransmitters, do not travel to distant cells through the circulatory system like hormones do. Rather, the long fiber-like extensions of nerve cells release neurotransmitters from their tips to extremely close target cells. The narrow gap between the two cells is called a chemical synapse. While paracrine signals move through the fluid between cells, neurotransmitters cross the synapse and persist for a very brief time.Studies have also focused on a form of cellular remembrance called molecular cellular cognition (MCC.) This is the innate intelligence found within the DNA of each body. It is also a branch of neuroscience which involves the study of cognitive process with the approaches that integrate molecular, cellular, and behavioral mechanisms.Losing cellular memory can be fatal. Mechanismsthat establish and maintain chromatin structures are central for the development of all cell types in our bodies, as well as maintaining cellular function and preventing cancer later in life.Essential oils contain powerful phenolic compounds that clean receptor sites, enabling better cellular communication. Better cellular communication means that your body will be in the optimal condition to fight external and internal invaders. As mentioned before, with the body processing over 400 million impulses per second, it is measuring the signatures of the essential oils and sending messages back in an easily recognizable way in the form of pain reduction, increased mobility, and increased energy.Just about everyone connected with P.A.T. has a set of remarkable stories of how a condition, illness or

injury cleared quickly following one, or just a few Physical Aromatic Touch sessions. To those who have experienced it, there is no question as to its effectiveness. And yet, P.A.T. and the concept of energy medicine is still new and strange to most people. Quantum physics and dynamic system theory have laid the groundwork for scientifically understanding the impact of focused intent upon cellular biophysics. The science of why P.A.T. works is becoming better understood every day. However, the current medical model is not based on quantum physics. Nor is mainstream medicine ready to embrace quantum physics or cellular function at this point. Instead, they focus on the development of new drug therapies or techniques, whether they are effective or not.One of the most frustrating experiences can occur when the Practitioner realizes that a particular essential oil will work for one person, but not for another. One would assume that if someone is suffering from shoulder pain and an essential oil works for them, it would work for the next sufferer. This, however, is not always the case. The answer is very simple. Each person’s body is unique and has its own set of challenges. What one person’s body might struggle with, someone else’s may not. If someone is suffering from one ailment or another, the first question anyone would ask is, “What do I do to get rid of the pain?” Instead, what we should be asking is, “What is the cause of the pain?” Could it be structural alignment, bone, muscle, nerve, tendon or cartilage, circulation, or emotional disturbances? This revelation opens up the floodgates and revolutionizes the way we look at essential oils and the human body. The human body is intelligent and is able to tell us what is going on if we understand the language and ask the proper questions. Selecting the correct essential oil to apply to the human body is the way to ask the correct questions to discover the body’s needs.

BAsICs OF THE HUMAN BODYOPTIMAL HEALTH

PARTs OF THE BODYTERMs OF THE POsITIONs

Just what is Optimal Health?

People tend to throw the term “optimal health” around when discussing ways to get healthy. But often there is no clear definition provided. Is optimal health simply not getting sick? Is it feeling like a million bucks or feeling like we’re on top of the world? Just what is “optimal health,” and what is involved in achieving it? We at BYEO feel it can be defined by a single word, homeostasis.

Homeostasis is derived from two Greek words. The first, homeo, means “to be similar.” The second, stasis, means “to be standing.” Homeostasis implies that all of the cells of the body have a similar state of standing within their environment. This similar state is needed to permit cells to function normally under external and internal changing conditions. It is this state the body constantly seeks and dictates to every chemical messenger and neuron, and to metabolism, circulation, and every other function the body performs to stay alive.

The human body is continually adjusting to the environment in order to maintain its state of standing. Although the body is regularly battling the environment from within, external factors play major roles in the overall homeostasis of the body. For example, postural imbalances and chronic holding patterns caused from work or recreational activities impact the overall homeostasis within the body by distressing the connective tissue.

All cells within the body have function managers called organelles. These organelles allow cells to perform their various jobs, such as the breakdown of proteins, delivering power to its parts, and this determination of cell traits, etc. However, for these organelles to function and operate properly, the cell must be able to hold its necessary form. It accomplishes this through a series of structures which make up the cell’s shape or cytoskeleton. It is critical to note the importance of the cell’s shape in its overall environment and homeostasis. If there are changes to the cell—either through structural, chemical, or electrical imbalances—the cell will not be able to function in the manner it was designed and intended.

The cells within the body rely on homeostasis to hold their proper shape, and ultimately, their proper function.

What some may not recognize is that structural imbalances play a huge role in the overall health and function of the cell. The cell keeps its shape via adhesions in the cytoskeleton of the cell through structures called integrins. Integrins attach to various types of connective tissues, such as fibronectin and collagen. If the space in which the cells exist is altered through structural imbalance, whether it is energetic, emotional, or circulatory, changes to the cell’s function can occur.

FOUNDATIONAL Certification Guide

Understanding anatomy directly affects your ability to maintain homeostasis. Once you understand the common anatomical terms and functions of the body, you will better understand the common dysfunctions of the body. You will also minimize the confusion that can occur when discussing the relationships between areas in the body or the location of a particular structure within the body.

A dramatic example of the importance of adhesion to proper cell function comes from studies related to the interaction between matrix components and mammary epithelial cells. Epithelial cells, in general, form the skin and the lining of most body cavities. They are typically arranged in a single layer on a specialized matrix called the basal lamina. The particular epithelial cells lining mammary glands, produce milk in response to hormonal stimulation.

If mammary epithelial cells are removed from mice and cultured in laboratory dishes, they quickly lose their regular, cuboidal shape and the ability to make milk proteins. If, however, they are grown in the presence of laminin (the major adhesive protein in basal lamina,) they regain their usual form, organize a basal lamina, and assemble into gland-like structures, capable once again of producing milk components.

Anatomical terms have been developed to create a universal language to describe the body without confusion. Understanding these terms will set a foundation that will aid you in furthering your education.

The foundational anatomy portion of this manual is not intended to be a crash course in anatomy, but rather a starting point to aid you in understanding the various modalities Be Young Essential Oils offers. We strongly encourage anyone who is serious about

understanding the human body and continuing their education with more advanced manuals of Be Young Essential Oils modalities, order an anatomy textbook or take classes that will help in gaining a greater understanding of the human body.

Parts of the Body

There is a great deal of vocabulary used to describe parts of the body, their location, relationship, comparison, and function. You won’t need to know it all unless you’re planning on a field of study that requires a strong background in anatomy. It is, however, important that you understand the basic terms used to describe various regions and parts of the body. You will hear the terms we’re about to discuss throughout the remainder of your education experience with Be Young Essential Oils, and in many medically focused articles and textbooks. As you familiarize yourself with these terms, discussions about the human body will become much easier.

TRUNK

The trunk is the portion of the body more commonly called the torso, and includes the vertebral column. The head and limbs are attached to the trunk, which is comprised of four regions: the neck, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis.

UPPER LIMB

The upper limb is commonly called the arm. It extends from the deltoid, or the pectoral girdle, down to the ends of the fingers. It includes all of the structures within that region, including the humerus, radius, ulnar, and the hand. The upper limb has specialized function varying from reaching and grasping to manipulating.

sHOULDER (PECTORAL) GIRDLE

The articulation of the head of the humerus and the glenoid cavity of the scapula comprise the shoulder joint which consists of the humerus and the scapula. The shoulder joint is attached to the trunk and upper

limb by a limited number of ligaments. It therefore has the ability to perform many actions ranging from adduction, abduction, flexion, extension, horizontal abduction, horizontal adduction, circumduction, as well as medial and lateral rotation.

It is important to remember that, because of chronic holding patterns and postural imbalances within the body, the shoulder joint tends to be an area where range of motion can become impacted. It is also critical to remember that many muscles from the trunk attach to various bony landmarks of the upper limb in order to stabilize the shoulder joint. Because of this relationship and the relationship of tensegrity (found out more about tensegrity in Chapter 3), often imbalances in neighboring muscle groups, or even muscles and connective tissue from other areas, may instigate a lack in the range of motion.

LOWER LIMB

The lower limb extends from the gluteal region to the foot. It includes the structures within that region, including the os coxae, femur, tibia, fibula, and the foot. The lower limb has specialized function varying from weight bearing to locomotion.

PELVIC GIRDLE AND HIP

The pelvic girdle is where the trunk and upper limbs join. The articulation between the acetabulum of the os coxae (pelvis) and the head of the femur are

what comprise the hip joint. The hip joint, like the shoulder joint, is attached to the body by a number of ligaments. Therefore, it has the ability to perform many different actions ranging from adduction, abduction, flexion, extension, horizontal abduction, horizontal adduction, and circumduction, in addition to medial and lateral rotation. It is important to note that due to chronic holding patterns and postural imbalances within the body, the hip joint tends to be an area where range of motion [like the Shoulder (Pectoral) Girdle] can become impinged.

One must always remember that many muscles from the trunk attach to various bony landmarks of the lower limb in order to stabilize the hip joint. Because of this relationship and the relationship of tensegrity, often neighboring muscle groups or muscles and connective tissue from other areas, may instigate a lack in the range of motion.

ANATOMICAL POsITION

It is important to have a standard reference point when talking about the human body. This reference point assists in limiting the amount of confusion that may arise when describing human anatomy, by having a universal understanding of the standard position from which anatomical structures are described. In the anatomical position:1 Body is erect, (upright or standing.)2. Upper limbs are at the side. (It is important the

entire upper limb is at the side, and not just the brachium portion of the limb.)

3. Palms are facing forward.4. Lowerlimbsaretogether.

Comparison and Relationship

POsTERIOR

PosteriorisderivedfromtheLatinwordpost, whichmeans after. Posterior would indicate an area that is situated after the indicated surface or body part.

Posterior commonly refers to the back side or back surface of the body or its parts.Example: The spine is posterior to the abdomen.

ANTERIOR

AnteriorisderivedfromtheLatinwordante, meaningbefore. Anterior would indicate and area that is in relationship before the indicated surface or body part. Anterior commonly refers to the front side or front surface of the body, or its parts.Example: The abdomen is anterior to the spine.

sUPERIOR

Superior is derived from the Latin word superus, meaning situated above. Superior is used to indicate something is situated above another region or part of the human body.Example: The knee is superior to the foot.

INFERIOR

Inferior is derived from the Latin word inferus, meaning low or underground. Inferior is used to indicate something is below or underneath another region or part of the human body.

Example: The foot is inferior to the knee.

MEDIAL

Medial is derived from the Latin word medius, meaning toward the middle. The term medial is used to indicate something is toward the center in relation to another region or part of the human body.Example: The nose is medial to the ears.

LATERAL

Lateral is derived from the Latin word lateralis, meaning to the side. The term lateral is used to indicate something is to the side of another region or part of the human body.Example: The ears are lateral to the eyes.

PROXIMAL

Proximal is derived from theLatinwordproximus, meaning nearest. The term proximal is used to indicate something that is nearer to the trunk than another region or part of the human body.

Example: The hip joint is proximal to the knee.

sUPERFICIAL

SuperficialisderivedfromtheLatinwordsuperfacies, meaning at the surface or face. The term superficial is used to indicate something that is closer to the surface (eg. the skin) compared to another region or part of the human body.Example: The skin is superficial to the organs of the body.

DEEP

Deep is derived from the Latin word profundus, meaning due to depth. The term deep is used to indicate that the area concerned is farther from the surface of the body/skin than another region or part of the human body.Example: The heart is deep to the rib cage.

Chapter Two: structural Objective

UNDERsTANDING THE “MAGIC” OF EssENTIAL OILs

Why Do Essential Oils Work so Effectively?

While taking a deeper look at the Physical Aromatic Touch (P.A.T.) program, we made an astonishing discovery that explains, on a scientific level, the power of essential oils. Because the amount of information required to explain this scientific discovery is so immense, we will go into more detail in the Structural Guide. However, for the purposes of this manual, an understanding of the extracellular matrix will help you understand the “magic” behind essential oils.A great way to look at the extracellular matrix is to compare the cell to a house. Consider a house and everything that must be present in order for the occupants to function and survive. Inside the house there are multiple rooms with different uses. There is a kitchen used to prepare meals and provide the energy through nutrition necessary for survival. Other rooms may include an office for organizing important business, a dining room for eating, and a bathroom. While the list could go on with various rooms and their specializations, it is important to note that none of these functions would work without a central network from outside the house to provide support.Houses, like the cell, do not stop at the outermost wall. Each house connects to the outside environment through wiring for electricity and communication. Like the cell, the house has a communicationmechanism, a space outside where mail from the post office can be delivered. On the top of the roof

you’ll find a satellite dish transmitting information inside the home. Mounted above the doorway you’ll find a security system to protect the occupants. All of these vital tools, located outside of the house, inform or indicate a specific action process, function, and overall homeostasis of the home.

Now, here’s the key! Why and how do essential oils work so effectively? Why has nothing else worked except the essential oils? Understanding the cell and its supporting system of connective tissue will take you on a journey and lead you to discover how essential oils support, communicate, and nurture living cells.

EMBRYOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT OF CONNECTIVE TIssUE

For a moment take a step back and look at the genesis of connective tissue, the very beginning of life itself.

The ovum is surrounded by polysaccharides (high molecular weight amino sugars and complex proteins) also known as the zona pellucida. The zygote (a fertilized ovum which now holds the genetic material of both parents) is contained within the zona pellucida. When the zygote initially divides from one cell into two; a small amount of plasma call cytoplasm from this cell escapes. This fluid surrounds the two cells, and provides a watery substance between the cells and the zona pellucida. This is the first example of a fluid matrix (a watery substance much like the watery substance in the ECM) occurring early in embryo development.
