“The Future is Hers”

Page 5: For we do not have a weaknesses, but One who has been ...

Dear Parishioners,

While fairy tale castles may be more

associated with medieval Europe,

here in the United States we have

many beautiful chateaus, mansions

and castles. There is the Biltmore

Estate in North Carolina, the Hearst

Castle in California and above is the

Boldt Castle in upper state New York,

as a few examples.

In the psalm for the liturgy this week-

end we call upon God as our Savior,

shield, refuge and fortress. Let us

think about that for a moment. The

saints often spoke about God as a shield in battle, and as a fortress to keep them safe. St.

Teresa of Avila spoke of the soul resembling a “castle, made

of crystal, formed as a single diamond, very transparent,

and containing many rooms…” Through prayer we venture

within, room after room, seeking to dwell with the King in

the innermost chamber.

In theology we call the presence of God in the soul as the

Divine Indwelling. Divine Love is a fire in the heart and we

can be true temples of the Holy Spirit. This awareness is a

great grace and comfort. St. Augustine spoke of this when

he wrote: “Although God is everywhere wholly present, he

does not dwell in everyone. It is not possible to say to all

what the Apostle says: ‘Know you not that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God

dwells in you?’ Though he is everywhere does not dwell in all, and he does not dwell equally

in those in whom he does dwell.”

It is sad to think that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit can be lost when a person is not in

friendship with God in a state of Sanctifying Grace. Yet it can be regained! The intimacy with

God and the human soul produces an extraordinary joy, knowledge and love for God. This

indwelling causes a happiness in the soul that cannot be described in human words. We have

a claim to this happiness through the sacraments, through prayer, and even when we are

called to suffer for his name.

Saint Paul also explained how the Holy Spirit is working inside of us when he wrote...

“The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the

Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. He who searches the hearts of

men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints

according to the will of God” (Romans 8:2627).

So even if you feel alone or suffering rejection, or feel abandoned and cannot pray, know that

God is with you, within you! He is your strength your shield and your fortress.

Fr. David
