For Parents of S4/5/6 Pupils How Parents Can Help Their Children
with SQA Deadlines Dear Parent/Carer We hope you find this booklet
helpful. It contains information about:
1. Procedures for Internal Assessments for Intermediate and
Higher courses. Sometimes people refer to these as NABs (National
Assessment Bank items).
2. Dates of Prelim examinations.
3. Dates of SQA examinations
4. Opportunities to attend ‘Open Door’ sessions with
teachers.
5. Early information about Supported Study and Mentoring.
6. Contacting Pastoral Care staff
7. Dates of Internal Assessments for Intermediate and Higher
courses
Deadline dates for the submission of folios to the SQA. It is
absolutely vital that pupils meet these deadlines. If they do not,
then they cannot be given the course award. Pupils should be
working on the submission long before the deadline.
8. Information about the Scholar Programme from Heriot Watt
University. We hope you find the information helpful, and we do
appreciate your support. The school website also has information
about courses and how parents can help:
www.kingspark-sec.glasgow.sch.uk - Staff and Subjects - Subjects -
(click the name of the Subject). If you don’t have internet access,
we would be happy to provide a printed copy of the website
information. Please contact the school. Your feedback on this
publication would be very valuable. Please use the feedback page at
the back, or email me – [email protected]. Kind

1. Procedures for Internal Assessments for Intermediate and
Higher courses The S5/6 Subject Choice booklet gives information
about the structure of Higher and Intermediate courses. They
consist of a group of Units (40 hours or 20 hours), each of which
has to be internally assessed. The procedure for Internal
Assessments is:
When the Unit has been completed, the pupils sit the Internal
Assessment (sometimes called a NAB). In
some courses, pupils work on Units one after another. In other
courses, pupils work on all the Units at the same time.
If the pupils pass the Internal Assessment, they are awarded
that Unit, and it will appear on their SQA certificate.
However, if the pupils do not pass the Internal Assessment,
pupils and parents will be given information
about
o How the pupil will be supported o What we expect the pupil to
do o Arrangements for reassessment.
Ultimately, pupils must pass all Units as well as the final
examination, in order to be given the full Course Award. If
necessary, pupils are advised to move to a lower level, to make
sure that they actually gain a qualification in the subject.
2. Dates of Prelim Examinations Prelim examinations will be
held:
S4 pupils – From Monday 9 January 2012 until Friday 20 January
2012 (or possibly a day or so later). Please note that Monday 9
January is the day that the pupils return to school after the
Christmas holiday.
S5/6 pupils – From Wednesday 25 January 2012 until Tuesday 7
February 2012.
3. Dates of SQA Examinations There will be a link from the Home
Page of the school website to the SQA 2012 Timetable. However,
usually the times of exams vary slightly in King’s Park, from the
official SQA timetable. We are permitted to do this to fit with the
school day, lunch breaks etc.
SQA Examinations start on Thursday 26 April 2012 (earlier for
Art & Design).

5. Supported Study and Mentoring Once again we will offer
Supported Study sessions in the weeks before the prelim
examinations, and before the SQA examinations. Timetabling will be
carried out to minimise the number of occasions when there could be
a clash of subjects wanted by a pupil. Please encourage your
children to attend these valuable sessions. A small group of pupils
will be identified by staff to receive mentoring support. They will
be given targets (eg gain 5 Credit passes), and will meet their
mentor teacher regularly for support. When the pupils have been
identified, parents will be informed.
6. Contacting Pastoral Care Staff Pastoral Care staff have a
teaching timetable. They also work with children, meet parents, and
attend other meetings to support pupils. So it can difficult for us
to recommend the best time to phone them.
If you telephone and leave a message, they will return your call
as soon as possible, but it may not be that day, depending on their
other commitments. If you have an emergency and the PT Pastoral
Care is not available, please ask to speak to the DHT in charge of
your child’s house, or the head teacher. HOUSE PT PASTORAL CARE

Modern Languages Department Every pupil S1-S6 can expect
on-going learning homework on a daily basis. The importance of
good, careful revision of vocabulary and grammar notes cannot be
under-estimated. Pupils are always given full notes and help sheets
to help them prepare for assessments. Normally at least one week’s
notice is given before speaking and writing assessments. Parents
can help by encouraging pupils to look over notes properly. All
notes will be in the pupils’ blue jotters. The Modern Languages
Staff are always willing to discuss strategies to enable pupils to
work to their full potential. Time can always be made available to
offer pupils help and encouragement. Pupils in S3 and S4 should
expect to complete 3 writing and speaking assessments each year
which will contribute to their overall grade in Standard Grade
French. It is vital that pupils prepare thoroughly! This is the
best chance to secure the best possible grade. In addition, pupils
who are studying SPANISH from S3 should ensure that they are fully
prepared for NABs for Intermediate 1 / 2.

Proven approach SCHOLAR offers a well proven, innovative
approach to academic study within schools, Further
Education colleges and foundation programmes within
universities. Over 400 secondary schools
in Scotland are benefitting from using SCHOLAR.
Interactive The online learning materials have been
professionally developed and consist of textual and
graphical descriptions, animations and simulations and online
formative tests. The material is
embedded within a Virtual Learning Environment that provides
channels for student and teacher
communications, frequently asked questions and progress
reporting and monitoring.
Achieving potential A recent survey showed that SCHOLAR had an
80% acceptance rating by teachers and that
95% of students would recommend the programme to a friend.
32% of the online study time is undertaken by students out of
school hours.
Peak usage time is between 7pm and 9pm Monday to Thursday in
direct competition with
prime-time television.
SCHOLAR Password for your Son or Daughter Teachers in school
have been provided with passwords to issue to all pupils studying a
range of
subjects at Higher, Advanced Higher, Intermediate 1 and 2 Maths
and Intermediate 2 Mandarin as
summarised in the table. If your son or daughter has not yet
received their password, encourage
them to ask their teacher.
