Dear Golfers,
After a winter for the record books, the Golf Club
staff and I couldn’t be more excited for warmer days,
longer nights and the start of the golf season.
This spring, we’re happy to announce the addition
of two new golf teaching professionals. Please join
me in welcoming Teaching Professional David Byrne
and Senior PGA Professional George Puchinksy.
We’re extremely excited to see how David and
George utilize their skills and expertise to make the
Academy even better.
In this issue, we hope you enjoy the breadth
of knowledge that our accomplished teaching
professionals have to share, including how to make
the most of your practice sessions and a special
Q&A section that answers some of the game’s most
pressing questions. Additionally, we hope you enjoy
reading testimonials from two of our members, Eric
Burns and Ken Davenport. Both frequent visitors of
the Club, Eric and Ken share how the benefits of
membership have helped transform their game.
If you have any questions about our programming
(including our renowned Junior Golf programs),
memberships or booking private events, please do not
hesitate to contact our dedicated staff. We’re committed
to providing the highest level of service possible and
are always eager to hear your suggestions, comments
or concerns. We look forward to serving you!
Best Regards,
David Beltre, General Manager 2014

David Byrne, Teaching Professional
As a native of Ireland, famed
for its outstanding and challenging
golf courses, it was only natural that
the “Sport of Kings” evolved into
something much more than a pastime
for David Byrne.
A player of the game since childhood,
David’s passion for golf resulted in his
election to PGA membership, where he
received a PGA Professional Diploma
Qualification. Every waking moment
was spent honing his golfing expertise,
playing with the best pros throughout
the most challenging courses in Europe,
the U.S. and Canada. David’s resume
of experience spans from playing in
the Irish PGA Championship alongside
three-time major winner Padraig
Harrington and current Ryder Cup
captain Paul McGinley, to winning
the Christy Green Memorial trophy, to
runner-up on the Pepsi Golf Tour.
After receiving his BA from
Concordia College, a strong interest
in exploring the scientific ways to
improve the player’s mindset led David
to pursue a Master’s degree in Sports
Psychology, which made an invaluable
addition to his impressive toolbox of
sports-related skills.
Having coached everyone from
beginners to Tour players, David’s
holistic approach to teaching has
proved beneficial to students of all
levels. By assessing each individual’s
physical abilities, David is able to craft
each lesson he teaches so that it is
most beneficial to the student.
When asked what he hopes to
achieve with his students at the Golf
Academy, David responds, “As a
qualified sports psychologist, as well
as a highly qualified teacher, I want my
students to enjoy the lesson and learn
from it, as well as develop an appetite
for more. I take pride in my teaching
and commit to giving each student my
undivided attention and focus in every
lesson. The facilities at Chelsea Piers
are second-to-none, which greatly
enhances the learning experience and
allows the student to get the most from
their lessons.”

and commit to giving each
student my undivided attention

George Puchinksy, Senior PGA Professional
George Puchinsky has been teaching golf
for more than fifteen years, most recently as
Director of Instruction at Greenhouse Golf
Learning Center in Waldwick, NJ. A born
teacher, George has a proven record of
success at every level of play, from beginner
junior golfers to Collegiate players and PGA
Tour hopefuls.
In addition to his Class A membership
in the PGA of America, George has earned
several prestigious industry certifications,
including two Titleist Performance Institute
certifications. For more than two years, George
studied under Lynn Blake, an internationally
known golf instructor and educator, and one of
the world’s foremost experts on The Golfing
Machine. He has achieved Senior Instructor
status and is on schedule to complete the
premier Master Instructor certification this fall.
George brings his years of specialized
education and practical experience to bear
in every lesson. But, most of all, he brings his
positive attitude for his students and his heart
and passion for teaching the game of golf.
“The joy that comes from helping a new golfer
get the ball in the air for the very first time is
unlike anything else. That moment that I have
shared with so many players over the years
just never gets old,” he says. “I am excited to
bring my passion for golf instruction to the
Golf Club, and look forward to working with
golfers of all levels.”

PURPOSEFUL PRACTICEInnovative Training Tips for a Better Game by Marjorie Jones, Head Professional and Director of Instruction
A lot of people seem to think that if they simply hit enough balls,
their golf game will improve. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.
Most people practice poorly.
Hitting balls without any goal in mind
isn’t going to improve your swing or
your game on the course. The key is
not how many swings you have, but
how many are productive.
So, how do you go about practicing
in a way that is beneficial to you?
The first step is to have a plan.
You need to have a purpose to your
practice. For example, let’s say your
purpose for the session is to work
on balance. One thing that you could
practice would be holding the finish
on every shot. If you’re having trouble,
take away some power. Hit shorter
shots and see if you can maintain a
balanced finish. If you are becoming
consistent, add more power. If you’re
not, hit smaller, less powerful swings
until you can hit consistently with a
balanced finish. There are a number
of useful drills that you can do to hone
whatever skill you are working on.
After you have practiced the skill
part of your plan for the day, always
leave time for the playing side of the
game. Hit shots to different targets
and see if you can still maintain
balance. Remember to change clubs
and targets to challenge yourself.
For example, imagine you are playing
a hole and start with a driver. If you
slice it, hit the shot that you would use
to get out of the trees and onto the
fairway. Then, hit the shot you need
to get to the green. Chip or pitch if
necessary. It’s also fun to make up
your own games to play individually or
with a partner. A personal favorite of
mine is to try to hit ten balls to a green
and see how many times you’re able
to hit the green. This is also a great
way to see if you are making progress
from week to week.
Another useful training tool is to
keep a log of what you are doing
and how you do after each practice.
It will help to pinpoint where you’re
having trouble and show you and your
instructor the progress that has been
made.
You want to avoid bad habits as
much as possible as they are much
harder to fix than good habits. This
would be a good time to work with
your golf professional to ensure that
you are practicing properly. If you
don’t have an instructor yet, we have
a great staff of experts to help you
practice more efficiently so that you
can have a golf game that works.
If you’re still having issues
and not improving, it is very
possible that you are still
practicing incorrectly.

IT’S ALL IN THE PUTTA New Tool to Improve Your Short Game by Allan Renz, Director of Schools
Putting comprises 40 - 45% of an average golfer’s stroke total. Becoming
more proficient at putting will have an extremely positive effect on your game.
Does your golf score suffer
because your short game isn’t
up to par? Tired of adding
strokes to your score card after
every putt? Meet the Quintic
Ball Roll Software, the latest in
putt analysis technology.
Designed to function as a launch monitor for putting,
the Quintic Ball Roll Software was developed out of a
need to understand how the golf ball leaves the putter
face. Capable of analyzing up to 360 frames per second,
recognizing markers on the putter and golf ball, and
producing a digital analysis of each putt, the Software
tracks the putter for four inches prior to impact and the ball
for the first 16 inches of the putt. Once this information is
analyzed, the Software then shows the numerical data for
both the club and the ball, including club speed, ball speed,
sidespin (cut or hook), vertical bounce, launch angle and
more.
Recently added to the Academy’s repertoire of teaching
technologies, the Golf Club is currently the only facility in
the Tri-State Area to offer the Quintic Ball Roll Software.
Combined with other tools, this highly effective software
is perfect for students of all levels who are looking to
improve on the greens.
For more information on additional technology offerings or to book a lesson with one of our pros,
please visit or call the Golf Academy at 212.336.6444.

KEN DAVENPORT member profile
For some people, golf is simply a way to
relax, but for others — including Golf Club
member Ken Davenport — golf is a way of
life. When asked about his connection to the
sport, Ken explains, “I go to the driving range
like other people go to the gym.” A Platinum
member since early 2013, Ken credits the
Club with helping him hone his skills over
the past year. “I hit balls every day,” says
Ken, “and without a doubt my game has
improved as a result.”
When asked what aspect of the Club he
finds most enjoyable, Ken points out that the
technology is second-to-none. “The video
feedback has been invaluable to improving
my technique,” he says. “You should also
consider advertising your ‘advanced wind
training machine,’” he jokes. Not yet familiar
with this piece of equipment? Then a visit
to the driving range’s D-Level is in order.
Due to the Club’s location along the breezy
Hudson River, the top tier hitting stalls are
home to consistent winds, a unique aspect
that allows players to practice in conditions
they’re likely to encounter on the course.
Currently, Ken says consistency is the
strongest part of his game, but concedes
that as a “game of millimeters” the sport is
frustrating at times. “You can hit the best
shot of your life and seconds later, shank
it into the trees,” Ken states. “What kind of
sport has that much up and down?”
Despite the occasional frustrations, it’s
the thrill of success that keeps him coming
back. As Ken says, “There is nothing better
than a perfectly struck shot.”

ERIC BURNS member profile
Eric Burns, one of the Golf Club’s
newest members, has one piece of advice
for those considering a membership: “Join
already!” As a frequent visitor to the Golf
Club’s driving range, it wasn’t long before
Membership Manager Rosie Abreu
suggested Eric consider looking into one
of the Club’s various membership options.
Although he admits he hesitated joining
at first, he finally became a member in
February 2014 and hasn’t looked back.
“I was on the fence for a long time,” says
Eric, “but I couldn’t be happier that I finally
pulled the trigger. The Golf Club is an
incredible facility with friendly staff.”
Eric says the most helpful part and
biggest perk of his membership is the
ability to hit unlimited balls, as it allows
him to work on a specific part of his game
for a significant period of time without
worrying about the number of balls he
has left on a ball card. Currently, Eric
says the strongest part of his game is his
short game and acknowledges he needs
the most improvement on consistency
with the longer irons. “My golf game has
certainly improved over the past few
years,” explains Eric, “and I’m confident
that my Golf Club membership will have a
positive impact over the course — no pun
intended — of the next year.”

CRYSTAL SPRINGS GOLF COURSE AT CRYSTAL SPRINGS RESORTby Tim Townsend, Senior PGA Chelsea Piers Professional
I had the privilege of staying at Crystal Springs Resort
in Hamburg, New Jersey last Labor Day weekend and what
a great place for a mini-vacation! The food is excellent, the
pool is beautiful and the golf is world-class.
One of the best courses at Crystal Springs Resort
(there are seven courses in total, including the child-friendly
Minerals Family Golf) is the Crystal Springs Golf Course. It
was voted one of the Top 50 Toughest Courses in America
and it deserves the ranking. It is a visually stunning course
that requires several rounds to get the distances right.
Several par threes are forced carries over a ravine. Miss
your shot or choose the wrong club and you’ll need a
hunting dog to find your ball.
Tim Townsend is a Senior PGA Professional and has been at Chelsea Piers for more than 12 years.
To book a lesson with Tim, call 212.336.6444.
Since the greens are very undulating, you must be on
the correct side of the hole or you cannot two-putt. The
fairways curve through the resort and have quite a bit of
slope to them. The course is difficult but fair and the experi-
ence is fantastic. The staff is knowledgeable and extremely
courteous. Crystal Springs Golf Course is one of the best
public golf courses in the Tri-State Area and gets two
thumbs up from me. Enjoy!

from the academy:
TIPS FROM THE GOLF CLUB PROSSome helpful insights from a few of the Academy’s
experienced teaching pros.
Everyone has the ability to put spin on the ball like the
pros. It’s a simple checklist of proper equipment, swing
mechanics and conditions. For the ball to back up, a
certain combination of factors must be in place, including
loft, speed, clean and precise impact, a soft covered ball
and accommodating greens. — Chance Scheffing
To best analyze your game, keep a score card when
playing. I am interested in three scores. The gross
score for each hole, the score of all shots taken
inside 75 yards of the green (including putts), and
the total number of putts taken per hole. With this
breakdown you can analyze where you need to work
to improve your scoring ability. A tour player will
average 27.5 to 30 putts per round. — John Hobbins
Get your child into golf with either group or private
lessons depending on their age. The main thing is to
make it fun and interesting. As your child matures, so will
their skill level. The relationship between the child and
instructor is very important, so choose wisely. We have
a number of instructors that specialize in working with
children/junior golfers. — George Puchinsky
The best way to practice on a tight schedule is at
home in front of a mirror. Work on repeating the key
points you learned during your golf lesson and use
the mirror to make sure you are doing them correctly.
— Chris Stoudt
When trying to
correct a slice
with your driver, try
putting your attention
to the clubface.
Making sure you
hit the ball with a closed clubface
will reduce the curve to the right
and encourage a path that hits the
inside of the golf ball. To achieve
a closed clubface, look at your
grip. The top hand should appear
more palm-down than palm-up.
Pay attention to this each time you
practice and your slice will diminish
in no time.” — Keith Jarvis
Try and determine your main ball
flight error, whether it’s too high,
low, left or right. Take corrective
measures to eliminate that shot
from your game. Keep important
stats, such as fairways hit, greens in
regulation and putts
per round, then you
can diagnose where
your game needs
improvement and
tailor your practice
time around your
weaknesses. Practice
as much as possible including
putting, chipping, pitching and
bunkers. A good rule of thumb is:
Practice 60% of your time from 60
yards and in. — Andia Winslow

Golf owes its increasing popularity
to the fact that anyone can participate,
enjoy, and excel, regardless of age,
sex, or skill level. There are more than
26 million golfers in the United States
alone. These golfers play between 30
and 40 rounds per year, in addition
to days spent practicing. In light of
its popularity, golf-related injuries have
increased in incidence. Over a two-year
period, approximately 40 percent of
amateur golfers might sustain an injury,
and the vast majority of these are due
to overuse.
The most commonly injured region of
the body in golf is by far the lower back,
followed closely by the wrist, elbow and
shoulder of the non-dominant, lead arm.
Poor mechanics, limited spine flexibility,
and weakness of the core musculature
of the trunk all contribute to lower
back injuries in golfers. Golfers who
carry their own bags have a higher
incidence of these injuries. The wrist
is the second-most commonly injured
area. Wrist injuries often represent
overuse to the flexor or extensor
tendons, though traumatic injuries can
also occur if the ground is struck first
with the club. With regard to the elbow,
the most common injuries include
medial epicondylitis (“golfer’s elbow”)
of the dominant arm, and
lateral epicondylitis (“tennis
elbow”) of the lead arm. In
a right-handed athlete, the
former is thought to result
from hitting the ground first
with the club, while the latter might result
from over-swinging with the right arm.
Although counterintuitive, tennis elbow
is at least four times more common than
golfer’s elbow in this sport. Women are
more likely to develop elbow pain than
men. Golfers also exert the muscles
of the shoulder during the golf swing,
including the rotator cuff, pectoralis
major, and latissimus dorsi. As
a result, rotator cuff bursitis
and shoulder muscle strain
are not uncommon in these
athletes.
The golf swing involves the entire
kinetic chain, from the lower leg, through
the hips, into the core, finally through
the upper extremities. The single-most
effective preventive measure in avoiding
golf-related injury is to improve swing
mechanics with instruction and practice.
A commitment to core trunk musculature
strengthening, as well as strengthening
and stretching of all major muscle
groups can also serve to minimize risk
for injury. Appropriate warm-up before
playing is also critical, and typically
required at least 10 minutes before
competition. An understanding of the
common injuries associated with golf,
and a commitment to these simple
preventive measures, will help to assure
that golf enthusiasts can avoid injury
and enjoy this challenging but rewarding
sport for many years.

TRAINING THE NEXT TOUR PLAYERS
Elite Junior Membership Program Continues to Grow
Over the past few years, a growing number of children
are following in the footsteps of Bubba Watson and Inbee
Park and entering the game of golf at young ages. As a
result, there are many junior golfers who have the drive and
potential to take their game to the next level with the right
teaching and direction. After seeing promise in a number of
young golfers in the Club’s junior programs, the Golf Club
developed the Elite Junior Membership Program.
Open to more advanced players ages 10-18, the
program is designed to cater to the needs of young golfers
interested in taking their game to the next level and to
help more established junior golfers hoping to make a high
school or college golf team.
Established in 2011, the Elite Junior Membership
Program has played a major role in developing the skills
of several talented young golfers, including brothers Luke
and Andrew Sample, who competed against some of the
world’s best junior golfers at last year’s US Kids World
Championships. Since its inception, the program has grown
from five members to 18 members. Led by Academy Pro
George Puchinsky, the talented Elite Junior Golf staff has
wide-ranging experience and is dedicated to providing the
highest quality golf instruction, coaching, and support to
each student.
