Suncoast Football Academy for Season 2020OverviewThe aim of the Academy is to give all football players the opportunity to be coached by elite, experienced and dedicated coaches and to develop their game to high levels. The Academy will provide an additional opportunity to all students at the College to access outstanding coaching programs within a supportive and engaging football environment.

Players will train and play within the Academy, maintaining strong community links with all local Football Clubs. Students will be given the opportunity to train and play with a Qualified FFA Accredited coach.

The Academy endeavours to develop as many players as possible at the College, giving them quality training and first-class opposition in games, whilst also representing their local clubs in fixture games and finals series.

Key Aspects• Specialist expert, highly qualified FFA coaching staff Scott Grimshaw, FFA A Licence• 30 x 90-minute Academy training sessions over 4 Terms • Game related approach as the major focus of all training• Pro-active style of play• Uniform system/formation of play 1.4.3.3 as a “development tool”• The importance of player development before winning • An emphasis on technique before tactics and conditioning• A “guided discovery” approach in player development• Effective possession “Street Football” based training• Age related development goals• Totally game-based training from passing exercises, positional games and game training to training games• “The best teacher of the game, is the game itself” KNVB• Suncoast Christian College understands that the game is the best teacher and that the players want to play the game• The coach will place restrictions on the games and can influence the players to achieve the coaching topic• All Suncoast Academy training has a football “problem/topic” from “warm up/passing exercises” and “game training” to “training games”• It is the most natural, efficient and loved way to lead the players to the goal of “game maturity”• Simplifying the game to its basic form is best done with small-sided games for Junior and Youth Development• Biannual written reports for all players

The standard of any match can only be improved by directed training. With young players, the importance of specific technical and skill training in the formative years is of paramount importance and will lay the foundations for their future development. It cannot be overstressed that the ability to perform the fundamentals of the game, the four functional game skills; striking the ball, dribbling/running with the ball, first touch and 1 v 1 is of great significance to the overall development and the equipping of the young player to compete in today’s modern game

Written Reports

A comprehensive report of each young hopeful Suncoast Academy player will be presented twice yearly to the player in June and November. The report is to be discussed with the player half way through the Academy season, providing an important opportunity for meaningful, 360-degree feedback on player progress and Academy performance.

Curriculum

To ensure alignment with the FFA National Curriculum and to enhance opportunities for player development, the football essentials have been subdivided into several categories:

• The four functional game skills - first touch, ball control, running with the ball (dribbling) and ball striking (passing, shooting, 1 v 1 - beating an opponent)

• 1 v 1 - defending, defensive headers, sliding tackles, tackling, attacking the ball • Speed of action - attacking headers, scoring ability, crosses, speed on the ball • Combination skills - overview, positional play, adherence to assigned tasks• Athletic personality - speed off the mark, speed from 0 to 10, from 10 to 30, and above 30 yards, mobility, strength in the tackle, stamina,

running skills and jumping power• Charisma - leadership ability, match mentality, attitude towards others, teammates, coach, referee etc, receptivity to coaching, ability to

withstand pressure• Other information - modest, cheeky, creative, plays in the service of others, character player, technical player, right footed, left footed, both

footed

Development PlanIt is essential to look beyond the short-term approach and plan for the player’s long-term development. It is important that young players develop a variety of fundamental skills to help them become good general athletes. It is important, however, to keep in mind that players evolve at different rates. The growth rate of their bones, muscles, organs and nervous system are different from stage to stage and these developments largely dictate their physiological and performance capabilities. These factors will be developed through a phase based, holistic approach, incorporating technique, insight, communication, football conditioning and personal development as children develop into young men and women.

Playing at a high tempo in both phases of play (attack/defence) is very difficult but implementing training methods and developing players who are able to achieve this is something worth striving for. As we begin our journey, our aim is to improve students both as footballers and individuals.
