The last time Madison Academy played in Bryant-Denny Stadium (2011) linebacker Tay-lor Ziak felt the Mustangs got pushed around in a Class 3A championship game loss He and his defensive teammates made sure his-tory didnt repeat itself

Top-ranked Madison Academy shut down Leeds vaunted run attack and Ziak made a huge defensive stop just before halftime as the Mustangs beat the Greenwave 31-14 for a second straight state title

Leeds 1000-yard rushers Tre Nation and Ty-ler Wright managed a combined eight yards on six carries against the tough Mustang front The Greenwave (12-3) switched to a five-receiver look to create space for quarterback TaDarryl Marshall who ran for 166 yards on 25 carries while completing 11 of 23 passes for 147 yards one touchdown and one inter-ception

Madison Academys running game mean-while was as good as advertised The Mus-tangs didnt complete a pass and ran for 366 yards and averaged 83 yards per carry

Game MVP Malik Miller ran for 169 yards and touchdowns of 1 yard in the second quarter and 10 yards in the third quarter Kerryon Johnson battled through lingering ankle and shoulder injuries to run for 93 yards on seven carries with a 43-yard score to open the game LaMarkus Martin added 78 yards on 13 carries and scored the Mustangs final touchdown on a three-yard run with 328 left in the game

Madison Academy alum and record-breaking Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews was selected in the second round as the 42nd overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2014 NFL Draft becoming the first Mustang to be drafted into the NFL

A Mustang football team captain in 2009 and an All-State honoree Jordan concluded his illustrious Vanderbilt career as the holder of five SEC records career receptions (262) career receiving yards (3759) 100-plus yard receiving games (19) seasons with 90-plus catches (2) and single-season re-ceptions (112) giving him 26 more receptions and nearly 650 receiving yards more than any other player in SEC history

He also completed his Vanderbilt undergraduate degree in economics in 3 frac12 years

His road to the SEC wasnrsquot the typical one though Instead of traveling the college camp circuit Jordan took advantage of the many service opportunities Madison Academy offered including a mission trip to Ghana with over 20 other MA students the summer before his senior year

He was worried hersquod lose weight and miss out on time to train and attend football camps But his attitude changed when he reached Ghana There he met Catherine and Vida two teenage orphans he connected with and continued to write letters to after the trip He wears two rope necklaces the Madison Academy students made for the trip mdashldquoI never take them offrdquo he saidmdash even when he suits up for games

ldquoIt made me appreciate more what I have hererdquo Jordan said of the en-tire trip ldquoEver since Irsquove taken that trip Irsquove made it a point to never complain It doesnrsquot matter how hard camp gets how hard school gets it doesnrsquot touch the things that those people go through and those kids go through at such a young age over there in a third-world country Life is always good so you have to always act like thatrdquo

In his 5 years at the helm of the Madison Academy Football program Head Coach Eric Cohu has guided the Mustangs to 2 Elite Eight play-off appearances (2009 2010) a State Runner-Up team in 2011 and State Championship teams in 2012 and 2013 He was named the 2011 Huntsville Times Coach of the Year and was selected to coach in the 2010 Alabama North-South All-Star game and the 2014 Army All-American Bowl Under his guidance Mustangs have signed SEC and ACC football scholarships as well as several Division 1-AA and Divi-sion II scholarships With a EdD in Leadership his resume includes an appointment as the Assistant Professor at Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia and as a football coach at Liberty Christian Academy where the team had a 21-1

record in his two years there with a Virginia Division I State Champion-ship in 2007 Dr Cohu (pronounced co-hue) also served on the Board of Directors of the Central Virginia Fellowship of Christian Athletes He serves as a consultant to the Israel Football League sponsored by the Kraft Family owners of the New England Patriots He has been making annual trips to Israel since 2007 to conduct summer camps and coaching seminarsclinics for the league Coach Cohu may be contacted at ecohumacademyorg or at cell (256) 975-8253

AHSAA Realignment 2014 -15

With the creation of a new 7-A classification there was a major shift in the typical alignments and common foes that each classification and region was accustomed to In 3-A Region 8 gone to 4-A are Deshler Elkmont and Westmin-ster Christian and moving up from 2-A are Colbert Heights Lexington and Sheffield

Other common Madison Academy 3-A opponents of the past to move up to 4-A include Hamilton Saks JB Penning-ton and Leeds (2013 playoff opponents) Fayette County (2012 State Championship opponent) along with Danville Trinity Presbyterian and Good Hope Clay County-Central jumps to 5-A as does JO Johnson

Several strong 2-A teams move up to 3-A including Fultondale North Sand Mountain Oakman Lamar County Lex-ington and Montgomery Academy which should make for improved competition in the regions they join
