WET/EXTREME WEATHER
In the event of wet or extreme weather, any cancellations of training or
matches will be communicated through the Marist College Ashgrove College
APP. Please check this regularly if poor weather looks imminent.
SATURDAY SPORT Unless there is extreme weather,
no decisions will be made until the morning of competition. The APP will be updated as regularly as possible.
TRAINING We will aim to let students know
by 2nd break if possible. This is not always realistic, so we encourage all students to have a contingency plan if poor weather arrives late in the day.
From the Head of Sport Continued... all people not just our own communities. The decisions and actions required of us by the Australian and state governments and medical authorities are based on the common good for all.
After much consideration, the member schools have reached the conclusion that we are unable to meet these requirements if sporting events for the last round of this term and for the entirety of the second term were to take place. The College Principals appreciate that this will cause significant disappointment amongst our student bodies as they have invested a lot of time and effort in their training and preparation. However, our greater priority is not only to their safety and well-being but also the safety and well-being of all our College communities and the wider community by playing our part in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
Whilst we understand the disappointment for so many of our young people, we appreciate your support in this decision and hope that this virus is contained as soon as possible with the best outcomes for all people.
AIC MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
ROUND 6
Round 6 saw our teams take on Padua in what we now know was the final round of AIC Competition for Term 1. All sports were looking to finish the season on a positive note and this was evident with some very good performances across AFL, Cricket and Volleyball.
A highlight of the weekend was an exceptional performance by our Junior volleyballers who were dominant in winning all 12 matches against Padua and helping gain crucial points toward AIC Volleyball aggregate.
Well done to all students, coaches, families and staff for the continued enthusiasm and passion for sport at Marist College Ashgrove. Term 1 has been another busy term at the College with 93 teams either representing the College or involved in our internal competitions. A great effort!
Next week’s newsletter will wrap up our Term 1 seasons with final points, premiership winners and teams of the season.

Swimming Training for the Remainder of Term 1 The end of Term 1 officially marks the end of the AIC Swimming Season here at Marist. The AIC Season runs from the beginning of Term 4, right through the Christmas holidays and up to the end of Term 1. This period of training is free of charge to all Marist students.
Training is, however, continuing until the end of Term 1 for those swimmers who wish to continue. This includes boys who were in the AIC Team, the Shadow Squad and any students who wish to swim for fitness and stroke improvement. The schedule below outlines the training times up to the end of Term 1. Obviously, if swimming training should be cancelled due to Covid-19, this will be communicated through the College App.
Training is available during Terms 2 and 3 but attracts a fee and is organised through the MCA Swimming Club. If your son is already training in one of the Club Squads and wants to continue now that AIC Swimming is over, he can simply keep going at his normal times. If your son has been training in one of the AIC Squads, but wants to continue in Terms 2 and 3, he can see our coaches, James Boyce or Damian Bromley, to discuss which squad he should join. All other enquiries regarding training with the club are to be directed to the Swimming Club administration ([email protected]).

TIME OUT WITH ... ANGUS DWYER
This week Tom Collier sat down with Super Coach of 7C’s Cricket Team Damien Nelson and 5th XI Cricket Captain Angus Dwyer.
From the College Sport Captain
What team do you play in and what is your role in the team? I am the skipper of the 5th XI Boarders cricket team, I am an impact middle order batsman and come onto bowl for the occasional leg spinning Jaffar. In the field, I can be seen fielding at 1st slip or short cover. One of my greatest attributes in the field is my “Class A” banter.
What do you enjoy most about playing in the 5th XI? The best thing about playing cricket is playing spending time with the boys. Even though we aren’t the best team in the school, we play to have fun and play in the right spirit. I enjoy making the perfect cordial brew and also the honour of presenting our baggies was great. Special mention must go to our supercoach Mr Tran.
Can you give us some of the season highlights? James Clarke took 5 wickets in our first game against our rivals, Villanova. Tom McKinlay, after good input in the first game, was unfortunately stood down for the second game. Mack Rennick specialised in bowling tight however unfortunately with several wides per over. Elih Morgan was unfortunately the chief in eating all the lollies and drinking the communal cordial. Francis Sevil bowled vital off spinners at the death in our second game. Tom Lyons, AKA. Mr. Highlights specialised in trying to make highlight plays out of everything. After many attempts, he could not pull off the one handed through the leg’s screamer and thus let it go for 4.
TIME OUT WITH ... DAMIAN NELSON
Give us a brief history into your cricket coaching career to date? I have coached since 1999. I think that my teams have been fairly successful – 13/14 premierships or undefeated seasons (I have been lucky with selections!)
What do you enjoy most about coaching cricket? I like trying to make a difference – finding kids who need a bit of help and seeing them develop as cricketers and as people. Cricket is a great at revealing character (as you know Tom). Meeting the parents – particularly the boarders’ parents who turn up to see their boys play after driving a long way is also especially enjoyable.
Who have been some of your favourite players to coach over the years? Some of my favourite players come from the class of 2020, who I coached in the 7B’s in 2015. These boys include Riley Grace (now captain of the 2nds), Harry Lyons (now batsmen in the 2nds), Nick Tucker and Tom Philp (allrounder in the 1st XI)
Also, a boy in my team last year – Cooper Guise – he taught me a valuable lesson – leave some kids alone – he had an unorthodox bowling action off the wrong foot but was incredibly effective because batters kept mistiming their shots. I also loved coaching the 200 other kids too!!
Round 6 of AIC Sport saw Ashgrove take on Padua. Unfortunately, circumstances have meant Round 6 was the last round of sport for all teams in Term 1. Congratulations to all teams for their participation and elite representation of the crest throughout the season.
Thank you must go to all coaches, support staff, volunteers and parents for making this season of sport a memorable one for all boys. In the AFL, the 1st XVIII were victorious against a strong Padua side. The win, led by outstanding performances by Nick Fisher and Tyler Galligan, meant the boys finished 3rd overall, which is an outstanding improvement from the 2019 season. The 1st XI Volleyballers, unfortunately, suffered their second loss of the season against a formidable Padua side. The loss completes a solid season from the boys, with a relatively inexperienced team special mention must go to Adam Greene for leading the boys on the court throughout the year. The 1st XI cricket completed a win to finish off their season against Padua. Chasing 178 for victory, number 4 batsmen Tom Philp steered the side home with a crisp 77*. The win was a sweet way to end a disappointing season for the boys, finishing 3rd in a close competition.

AIC CRICKET 2020 - ROUND 6 VS PADUA - SATURDAY 14 MARCH
TEAM TEAM REPORT
1st XI A very satisfying four-wicket win in what turned out to be the final match of a tumultuous season. Tom Philp batted exceptionally well, playing the sheet anchor role of the innings to finish on 77 not out as we chased down Padua’s first innings total of 178. Tom was well supported by Nathan Harding (39) and Jacob Kumaru (14 not out) who helped steer us along to the winning runs.
2nd XI Thanks to boys and the parents of the side for their involvement of another great season. Thanks also to the College for allowing me to enjoy eleven seasons in my capacity as the First XI Coach, I wish everyone the very best for the future.
Se8A The 2nd XI finished their season undefeated with another solid 87-point victory against Padua. Another solid bowling and fielding performance from Marist resulted in Padua all out for 93. Charlie Ryan and Hilton Bidgood outperformed, however, everyone chipped in for a wicket, which was sensational. Riley Grace (58) and Nathan McKarzel (31) were the top performers with the bat, however, Dillon Cope and Ben Roden-Cohen both were dominant in the middle order. A fantastic season for the 2nd XI, and this is a credit to the consistency of boy’s performance and the dedication of Michael Toolis (for trainings) and Stephen Barwell (match day).
8B Captain Harry Frost was back in the coin toss winner’s circle winning the toss and electing to bat on a wicket that looked to favour some positive scoring. A good start from openers Nickelson and Frost, who ended his innings on 52, and contributions from James Brandon (43*) and Leo Henry (22) allowed Ashgrove to post a strong 4-147. A fierce opening spell from Flynn Cleary and William McGauley put Padua on the back foot early. Their pace, line and Ashgrove’s resolute fielding had the visitors in all sorts. Louis Morris, Sam Lewis, Lachlan McCall and Jack Thompson’s suffocating attack closed out an emphatic victory to leave Padua college 70 runs short.
7A The 8B bowling game plan all season has been to maintain a quality line and length, even at the expense of speed. The bowlers have followed this plan meticulously and it has proven to be a successful one. Putting the ball in the right spot is key and this, backed up with enthusiastic fielding, ultimately leads to drying up the run rate and taking wickets. For our last game, our opening bowlers again followed this plan well, although Padua, batting first, started reasonably strongly and were 0-30 off 10 overs. The introduction of Joe Pegg (3 for 5) and Nate Roberts (2 for 3) into the bowling attack however, saw a huge collapse from Padua and they were dismissed for 51 runs in the 27th over. Our batsmen made short work of the run chase, hitting the target in 17 overs. Nate Roberts was brutal with the bat scoring 32 not out off 23 deliveries. This was the final game of what has been a great season for the 8B cricket gentlemen. Congratulations on winning a well-deserved premiership.
7B Marist won the toss on a sunny afternoon at Cameron Oval and elected to bat. Tom Clulow and Ted Clarke were solid early but Padua’s tight bowling saw Marist collapse. All out for 72, Padua got off to a shaky start losing three quick wickets thanks to some good fielding (2 run outs). After reconsolidating however, Padua middle order swung their way to victory, punshing the lose ball well and guiding them to a comfortable 6 wicket victory.
The Ashgrove 7B’s won the toss and decided to bowl in their clash against Villanova. Momentum shifted back and forth throughout the innings and Villa finished on a competitive score of 83 after their 30 overs. Ashgrove stayed on track for the entire innings despite the loss of a few quick middle order wickets. With 7 runs needed off the last over, and four off the last ball, the boys unfortunately fell agonisingly short by just 1 run. Overall a great team effort, almost resulting in a brilliant win. Great season boys.
AIC AFL 2020 - ROUND 6 VS SEC - FRIDAY 13 AND SATURDAY 14 MARCH
TEAM TEAM REPORT
1st XVIII The 1st XVIII had an excellent win against Padua and again ran over the opposition in the last quarter. The boy’s decision making and disposal skills were appropriate and we had contributors on every line. This makes three in a row for us and the boys certainly want to stamp their authority make a statement as a quality side. The tough back six, who are unfortunately not recognised as much as the midfield or forwards played a tight uncompromising role with stand-out performances from McIntosh, H. Searle & O’Flaherty. Cowan showed how much he’s improved with back to back smothers late in the third quarter, which is what we’ve asked for as coaches, always stay in the game with second and third efforts. Our midfield has been strong over the past three weeks with Galligan, Thomas and Pfitzner all winning plenty of the football. It was pleasing to see Brassington having his best game in the ruck. In the forward line Newell plucked some important grabs and kicked some good goals. It was pleasing to see a tall forward dominating a game. Next up we have Iona, which will be a tough last game as they beat us by four goals in a trial game earlier in the year, but we have improved a lot since then and want to finish the season off win a fourth straight win.
Intermediates Year 8/9
The 8/9s were really looking forward to the clash at Kedron oval against arch-rivals Padua. Kicking with the wind, the lads made a good start and FF Urquhart showed speed to run in our opening goal. Rosenbrook was leading from the front and ably followed by Clements, Knapp and McClure. Just down at quarter-time and ruckman Cottam tried valiantly to lift the troops but the extra height of Padua forwards was proving difficult to contain. Munroe Wood and Cody O’May battled against the odds but Padua established a match-winning lead. The last half highlights were 2 goals from sneaky fwd pocket Hunter James, plus some of the 8s in Cleary, Burnell and Kazzi finding the footy; however, most of all the coaches were pleased with the way they fought out the game to the last siren in what might be our last game for 2020.
Juniors – Year 7 Round 6 was against a well-drilled and well-structured Padua. This was one of the boys' greatest challenges this season and the boys rose to the occasion and provided a good contest against the favourite for the premiership this year. Sadly, it took the boys until the second half to start playing their best with the intensity and desire that has been shown in the previous weeks. By this time Padua had already kicked ahead and were looking to see out the end of the game. However, Ethan Schutz, James Milner, Elliot Aldridge, Archie Murray and Harry Hogan all provided excellent leadership and turned the attitude around enabling the boys to better contest against the opposition. Lack of structure and some lack of game knowledge were two key factors to the boys' loss on the weekend (65-9). Despite this setback, the boys are determined to train harder and come out against Iona next week with an improved performance.

6A Another brilliant display of teamwork and sportsmanship from the boys. A particular mention must be made of Jonah Wilde & Will Easter’s classic catches in the field. Well done boys!
6B The 6B boys played an excellent game of cricket today out. Sent into bowl first the boys managed to keep it tight and bowl Padua out for a grand total of 82 runs. Special mention must go to Fletcher Murray who took 3 for 8 off 2.2 overs. Confidence was high and it clearly showed in our batting performance chasing down the 82 runs in just 13 overs with help from our big hitters Matt Pegg (21) and Fletcher Wessling (28).
6C After a little bit of rain towards the end of the week the 6Cs travelled to Nundah to play Padua and were happy to get on regardless of the wet field. After winning the toss, we sent Padua in and bowled well from the start on a small field. Padua finished strongly and at the completion of 20 overs were 5/94. Well done to both Ben Sinclair and Ruben Smythe for two wickets each. After this, it was a strong performance by Marist with the bat proceeding a wonderful platform set by the openers. Marist finishing on 3/125. Well done to Ben Sinclair and Harry Beasy for 17 and 23 not out respectively. Good game by all.
6 Gold It was a very dominant performance by Marist chasing down Padua’s first innings total of 70 within 13 overs and with 8 wickets to spare. Weston Lewis contributed a handy 19 and Aurelius scored a fast 14, smacking multiple boundaries in a row. Tom Collins bowled consistently managing to snag three wickets and Aurelius also managed to snag 2. Overall was a good all-round performance by the boys.
6 White In a tough defeat on a difficult and interesting field, the boys played some decent cricket. With some great bowling from Owen Barker and Toby Forbes, as well as a brilliant catch from Pat Tealby. With a large run chase against a strong opposition team the boys gave it their all with some beautiful shots by Jackson Skinner and Owen Barker. Unfortunately, their efforts weren’t enough and the boys came up short.
6 Green The mighty 6 Green cricket team had a disappointing loss to Padua on the weekend – Padua 2/101 compared with our 8/86. Padua woke up early to our ‘sneaky run’ tactic, and so took 3 easy wickets from us with run-outs and some solid fielding. The Marist sharpened their fielding too late in the game to cause Padua concern. Ollie McGauley was a pleasure to watch with the bat scoring 32 runs with 6 fours and one 6 in the mix. Ethan Barbaro was unlucky not to take a wicket with his precise bowling. A great catch by Finlay Gardiner gave spectators a treat as well. Thanks for a great season boys – it was a pleasure to work with you.

5A What a way to bounce back after a disappointing loss last week! The boys came out firing scoring an unassailable 121 runs. Great batting display from Salem Tamer, Harry McAuliffe and Joshua Pope to put the team on the front foot in the match. The boys bowled very tightly, Riley Peacock was on fire, only just missing out on a hat trick. A fantastic classic catch by Harvey Laughton when keeping and backing it up with a stellar over secured the victory for the mighty MCA 5As.
5B Sent in to bat the openers got through the new ball before Owen Aldridge came to the crease to score 16* with some cracking shots. A quick 13 runs from Ethan Taylor saw Marist get to 116. A clinical performance with the ball saw Marist bowl Padua out for 40 to stay undefeated. Two wickets to both Patrick Collins and Harry Vickery and a fantastic runout to Clancy Barrett sealed the win. Well done boys.
5C The 5Cs lost the toss and were sent into bowl. Padua had a strong start but lost quick wickets in the middle to be bowled out for 53 with Max McBride taking 3/3. Ashgrove lost an early wicket but consolidated and cruised to victory scoring 4/86 off 20 with Tom Deem top-scoring with 10*.
5 Gold 5 Gold enjoyed a win over Padua on Saturday. It was good to see an improvement in each boy’s bowling which helped the boys secure their win. Considering this is the first cricket season for a number of the boys, they are playing well and are enjoying themselves.
5 White With a tie this week the boys showed true spirit ensuring their batsmen had the best chance to get across the line. With the ball Dom Atzeni was a stand out with his wicket maiden to start the game. Also, Ben Thirgood for his 2-wicket haul in a tight game-changing over. Felix Nolan and Elliot Broadfoot also started us off exceptionally with the bat. With great starts to both innings, it was always going to be an entertaining game. Good work this week, an undefeated season is still in sight.
5 Green Match Abandoned
5 Blue The 5 Blue boys won their 4th game running in wonderful fashion, scoring 76 runs to beat Padua’s 54. The boys communicated well throughout the whole day, which was displayed through great fielding and running between wickets. The boys are hoping to go through with an undefeated season with one game left to win!

AROUND THE GROUNDS
6A The Marist 6As played their best game to date against Villa. While the score looked favourable towards the opposition, the Marist boys dug deep throughout the game and executed most of their basic skills. Isaac Ting, Taj Cook and Archie Searle performed very well on the day and allowed the team to excel.
6B A tough outing for the 6Bs on the weekend, battling for four quarters against what was a well-drilled Villanova side. The boys showed glimpses of being able to match it with their opponents, however we just couldn’t put it all together. A strong effort in the midfield was a highlight, with Ky Campbell and Will Beaton getting plenty of footy and applying suffocation tackling pressure.
5A The game was once again a close and hard-fought battle with some of the best tackling seen by the Marist boys yet. As a result, the first quarter saw only a single goal scored by the opposition. The second followed a similar game style of hard tackling and in close gameplay with not a huge amount of space to run and kick. Both teams kicked a goal late in the quarter; it was the opposition that still led. The second half brought about a much different style of play with much more running and kicking; this led to more goals. Unfortunately, for Marist in the final quarter, the opposition proved too strong as they pulled away in the late stages of the game.
5B The 5B team took the field against an opposition who had racked up bigger wins against opposition than the MCA boys had but that didn’t worry the team as they started strong in the first quarter. Throughout a seesawing match the boys threw everything into defending and when Villanova scored two quick goals in the final quarter to lead, it didn’t look good. The 5B team knew they had big motors though and finished the game off strongly to record a thrilling 3-point win. Well done!
