The Helms family has been producing, testing, culling, marketing and servicing our bull customers for 65 years. Even with 60 sales under our belt, we are excited to offer you another set of sound, func-tional bulls with genetics that lead the beef industry. And, just as important as great genetics, you get our great customer service, warranties and guarantees that we have developed and offer to every one of you on every bull you purchase. Experience is a great teacher and our customers continually tell us how much they appreciate the way we eliminate the poor ones and stand behind the good ones.
To celebrate our 65 years selling bulls and taking care of our customers, we are giving all of our past customers who buy a bull this year a special $65 discount. You have helped us be successful and we want to say Thank You!
We expanded from Nebraska to Missouri to better serve our “fescue belt” customers with bulls de-veloped on fescue grass and grown in the environment they work in. Experience and quick acceptance by our friends and customers in Missouri and surrounding states has shown us you appreciate these athletic, proven, Grown On Grass bulls that are ready to go to work. You tell us that they can breed more cows and continue to “get better”. We think it makes sense to produce bulls that work for you and make you more money.
As is true with all businesses that expand beyond family help, there is change. Please take time to introduce yourselves to James Sparks, our new manager in Missouri. Born and raised in Missouri in the seed stock business, James knows cattle and will help you find exactly what you need and take care of you if there is a problem. If you have any concerns that you want to talk with me about, I am available 24/7 at 308.962.6500.
Welcome to our 15th sale in Missouri. Take advantage of our years of experience and cattle knowledge and know that we will take care of you if there is a problem. And, we have some options to help sell you calves if you’re interested.

lot # Flying H Genetics is retaining 50% semen inter-est in every bull sold. the buyer receives 100% pos-session and resale or salvage value and 50% semen interest. - If Flying H Genetics chooses to utilize their semen interest, they will coordinate with the owner and pay all expenses for their semen . If a semen sales market develops on a bull, Flying H Genetics will work with the owner to promote and sell semen splitting the expenses and income 50/50 . Again, this semen reserve does not affect the buyer’s ability to have full use of and receive full sale price for the bull with the semen reserve follow-ing the bull to the new owner . We estimate that this may only affect 1 or 2 bulls per year . If you have questions, pleasevisitwithJamesorCodyatanytime.

Because disposition is a very important management and safety issue, Flying H Genetics has researched and developed a system to score all of their cattle, including any cattle sold for breeding purposes, for disposition to eliminate the unacceptable ones . We have been culling on disposition for years but scoring them quantifiesandindentifiesthemmoreaccuratelymakingcullingmore accurate and effective .
Cattle are a herd instinct animal . Seperate them from the herd andtheirnaturalresponseistofleebacktothegrouporfightfortheir life . Domesticating them has gentled them but their natural instinctsofflightandfightarestillthereatvaryingdegrees.Generally, the sooner and more often cattle are in contact with and handled by humans in a calm, nonthreatening way, the more trustingandlessflightyorthreatenedtheywillfeel.
Knowing this, our system seperates an individual animal from the group into a small pen with one or two people to add a common stressor. Since all cattle have a different disposition (just like people) this will create different degrees of nervous-ness, flight and fight that can be scored. Scoring the different levelsofnervousness, flightandfightallowsustoidentifydifferentlevels of disposition . The scores range from 1 to 5 with 5 being the most calm . This is a subjective score but certain actions help groupthecattleintothefivedifferentlevels.Followingisageneraldescription of the type of actions observed while scoring that help rank each individual’s disposition .
one Star–animal is very nervous and agitated and is looking for an escape route . He’s always at the back of a group, head up and keepshisdistance.Hewillmakeothersnervousandflightyandishard to sort from the group . Anything new will create great distress and he will get more agitated the longer he’s held seperately . Due to safety issues, these are culled immediately .

three Star–animal is uncomfortable wanting to keep distance . He will stop but is very attentive and moves without much pressure . He’llexitatafastwalkorslighttrot.Handlesfineinagroupbutgets nervous when seperated, wanting to rejoin the herd . Can get excited if pressured or forced out of comfort zone so low stress, low pressure handling helps .
Four Star–animal moves when pressure is applied but will stop easily . Will stand and allow you to approach but not get too close . Exits at a walk . Fast movements, loud noises and strange situations will make him nervous . Low stress handling works great .
Five Star–animal is very calm and gentle, easy to sort and move . Will stand, allow you to approach and maybe touch him and may even approach you . Needs to be urged to leave the pen . Can get excited but calms down quickly . Responds well to proper handling .

In the spring of 2012 the American Simmental and Red An-gus associations merged their data bases and EPD calcula-tions .This created a new base and the EPD numbers changed but the relationship of one animal to another did not change . This allowed Simmental and Red Angus genetics to be compared on the same base . In the late summer of 2012 the American
Gelbvieh Association contracted with the American Sim-mental Association to run the AGA National Cattle Evaluation and produce their sire summary and breed EPD calculations . After some research, it was decided to adopt the Simmental/Red Angus multi-breed National Cattle Evaluation and use the same base so that all three breeds could be compared for most traits apples to apples .

Itisveryimportanttocorrectlyidentifybullstobeusedonfirstcalfheifers . Therefore, we use a combination of two tools . We start with theguidelinesforheiferbullqualificationestablishedbytheUniver-sity Of Missouri Extension’s Show-Me Select heifer Program . This system ranks bulls with the desired amount of calving ease or CE to workonheifersandminimalizeanychanceofcalvingdifficultydueto the size and shape of the calf . The Show-Me Select Program has set minimum thresholds for CE that a bull must have to be used on a heifer . Furthermore, those standards are based on EPDs calculated by breed associations only - i .e . no generically calculated numbers . We also use some data we collect to help strengthen the accuracy of this process . We analyze a bull’s birth weight and physical design to assess their ability to make a “sleep at night” CE bull . “things are really starting to change for guys selling feeder cattle. You better be dialed in with your bull supplier and make sure he knows and under-stands the needs of this industry, as well as your indi-vidual needs . That is exactly why we work with Flying H Genetics . We know guys that pay a lot of money for the wrong type of bulls and it really costs them money . A set of red purebred Gelbvieh steers just sold recently for a major discount and cost the owner over $100/hd in loss-es . No one wanted to pay much for his calves, because his bull supplier failed to pay attention to Carcass Value and the feed yard buyers knew it . A good relationship with a reputable bull supplier is more important now than ever before .”

RoUGHAGe n’ ReADY™ means our bulls and females are developed on roughage diets to make sure they can make a living on roughages . Over 10% fail this forage ability test .
Beef cattle have four stomachs to convert roughages (straw, corn stalks, hay, grass, etc .) into usable energy and protein to produce, reproduce and supply us with great tasting beef . Try feeding hogs or chickensorfishsomestrawandseewhathappens.
Developing bulls and heifers on roughages trains them to forage and work for their food and helps us identify those that cannot survive without a corn bucket so we can eliminate them before marketing them as breeding stock .
WHAT IS ROUGHAGE ’N READY™ ?
In Nebraska we use grass, straw, corn stalks, cane hay, silage and wet distiller’s grains as rough-ages for our rations . In Missouri, the bulls are Grown On Grass® (fescue) year around with dried distiller’s grains and other by products like soy hulls to supplement the protein and energy the grass lacks during parts of the year .
OurROUGHAGEN’READY™developmentsystemidentifiesgenetics that make the cattle businessprofitable.Beingable to make a living and produceefficientlyonrough-ages is the big advantage beef cattle have over our competi-tion . Even if we do feed corn to produce premier corn-fed beef products, most of their life is spent converting roughages to beef . How many years do your cows spend produc-ing and reproducing without ever eating a ker-nel of corn? A corn-fed steer may only utilize corn for 4 months out of his 15 month life span . The Tradition ContinuesEvery family has their unique story. The Helms Family Story starts in Germany, moves to America in 1867 with my Great Grandfather when he was eighteen years old, then to a homestead where my grand- father was born in 1889 northeast of Arapahoe, Nebraska.
TRUSTWORTHY“My Dad bought his first bulls from Helms family in the 1960s. Over the years we have been impressed with the improved quality and value of the bulls each year. Using Flying H Genetics bulls has improved our cowherd and made us a lot of money. We have only been to the Flying H Ranch one time and always buy our bulls sight-unseen on the phone. the one word i would use to describe Flying H is trustworthy.”
Sean Brenner, colorado
FlYinG H GeneticS
Agriculture, crops, cattle and horses, has been our occupa-tion for generations; seed stock production was added by my father Clarence in 1948 with the purchase of one registered heifer for $385. He showed and sold her first bull calf at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, CO for $4975 and he was hooked.
Clarence and Lois moved to the current Nebraska Flying H Genetics sale site after World War II, living and raising a family, crops and registered cattle for 60 years before selling to Kyle and Kayla in 2006, the fifth generation of Helms’s to carry on the fam-ily tradition. Their daughters are number six.
In 1976, Dick and Bonnie moved back to the farm/ranch after graduating from the University of Nebraska with degrees in Ani-mal Science, Ag. Economics and Ag. Journalism. They purchased the farm where Dick’s mother was born and developed it into the bull development headquarters for the operation.
Dick and his three brothers were members of 4-H and FFA with their experience and profits paying for their cars, educa-tion and first heifers to start their herds.
In 1968, as part of an FFA project, they purchased a scale and took their first weaning weights. That was followed by breeding their first cows with Artificial Insemination in 1971 and utilizing the new technology of Embryo Transfer in 1973.
Dad always said, “If you’re going to do it, do it the best you can”.
The demand for good bulls and females continued to grow as the industry continued to change. This lead to the addition of Gelbvieh genetics in 1982, the development of Gelbvieh X Angus hybrids in 1995 and the addition of Simmental genetics in 2008. These additions allow Flying H Genetics to offer their customers more genetic choices to utilize heterosis (crossbred vigor) and complimentary breeds and genetics to produce better cattle.
In 2005, to better serve their customers in the southeastern United States, Flying H Genetics added a ranch in “the fescue” belt. This production and marketing center is currently located in Lowry City, MO. “Grown On Grass” bulls are developed grazing fescue grass with some supplementation to identify bulls that can tolerate entophyte infected fescue grass and are muscular, athletic and ready to go to work. This niche has grown into sales the third Saturday of March and the fourth Saturday of October plus private treaty sales providing over 250 “Grown On Grass” bulls annually.
“Doing our best” always means utilizing the best tools available. While taking and processing thousands of weights and measurements every year and extensive use of AI and ET, today’s tools include ultrasounding for carcass traits, EPD’s and Indexing and DNA testing. Flying H Genetics spends thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours every years utiliz-ing these tools to identify and cull genetics that are not “indus-try improvers” and identifying and developing the genetics that make the cattle better and our customers more money.
We believe that a quality product is the first part of great customer service. And, our 65 years of experience has taught us how to take care of our customers after the sale.

IMPRESSIVE“Between my Dad and me, we have bought bulls from FHG for over 30 years. Disposition, calving ease and weaning weight are the top 3 traits that are very important to us since we sell our calves off the cow in the fall. We are impressed with the continued improvement in the bulls each year. not only are the bulls from FHG impressive, but Dick and his crew have been a very impressive and caring group of people to work with.

QUAlITY"Buying Flying H bulls has given us a HUGe improvement in the qual-ity and weight or our calves. We bought our first bulls from Flying H in 2012 and now are exclusively a Flying H Genetics customer. they produce great bulls and stand behind them 100%. they have a large number of bulls to choose from and the calves out of our FHG bulls are the best we have ever produced."

must pass before being sold, coupled with our industry--lead-ing warranties and guarantees means our customers get great genetics and great service.
Sixty-five (65) years is a long time. A lot has changed and many things have gotten better. I am amazed at how much different seed stock production and the genetic business is today than when Clarence sold his first bull in 1949. Tools like EPD’s and DNA genetic testing allow us to more accurately identify an animal’s true genetics. This helps us get our cus-tomers the exact bulls they want to get their specific job done. Although not perfect, todays tools help us build better bulls and females and identify their genetics so our customers can buy what they want, in the color they want, with the specific
traits they need.As Flying H Genetics transitions into this high tech era of
seed stock production, it is exciting to think about the future. But, knowing that our future is grounded on a solid foundation of family heritage, honesty and integrity and a vision of providing superior genetics and service is what makes me smile.
Dick and Bonnie are current owners of Flying H Genetics. With the help of family and friends they operate two locations in NE and MO marketing semen, females and around 400 bulls per year to over 1000 customers in almost every state and some foreign countries. They are proud of the fact that they are helping over 20 families participate in and build the beef seed stock industry of the future.

Flying H Genetics has offered limited free delivery for 20 years as a customer service and because we think it is important to visit your ranch, see your cattle and make sure our cattle are helping you produce the genetics you want.
Since we sell cattle nationwide, fuel and equipment costs force us to put some limits on free delivery. The seed stockbusiness, like all other businesses, must address the costs of product delivery as part of their overall customer service plan.
To treat every customer fairly, we have established the following delivery policy:
A. Every animal valued over $3,000 will be delivered free within 200 miles of sale location.
B. All other animals valued over $3,000 will be delivered the first 200 miles free with additional miles prorated per head with freight charges guaranteed not to exceed $250 per head.
C. Animals valued less than $3,000 will be delivered on a case by case basis.
If you have any questions, please contact James at 417-309-0062, Cody at 303-842-9071 or Kyle at 308-692-6940.
