be shortened to 6-10 months by filing an

Flowchart for Management (Patent)

After decision to grant a patent, a patent fee for

the first three years must be paid in a lump to the

Japan Patent Office. To maintain the patent right

for more years, the patent fee for each year must

be paid in advance by the end of the previous

year.* The patent fees for multiple years shall be

payable in a lump. In principle, the duration of

the patent right shall expire after a period of 20

years from the filing date.

*E.g., the patent fee for the fourth year shall be

paid by the end of the third year from the date of

the registration establishing the patent right.
