This front wall mounted machine located above the driver’s cab is the correct unit to meet the high demands of distribution traffic. The evaporator is completely integrated in the refrigeration unit so that loading right up to the front wall is possible without any loss of loading height; no more damage to evaporator or goods. Quick-release fasteners allow easy maintenance and exchange of the refrigeration machine within a few minutes.

Alternator drive has been the technology used for gener-ating electricity for refrigeration since the FRIGOBLOCK Grosskopf GmbH was formed. Like an electric generator, the alternator is integrated in the belt drive of the truck engine. As the truck engine revs up, the rotary frequency of the alternator increases and generates voltage and power.
The frequency provided by the alternator is directly fed to the electric motors for compressor, fan and blower. Consequently, these units rotate at a frequency that de-pends on the speed of the truck engine. When supplied from the electric mains, the speeds are constant due to the constant frequency of 50 Hz.

What are effects of variable rotational frequencies?The rotational frequency of the refrigeration system depends on the engine speed. The compressor, fan and blower are running proportional to the speed of the truck. Consequently, the output of the refrigeration sys- tem varies. It would be desirable if the system was con-trolled at the most efficient operating point. The invert-er technology enables speed control of the components as a function of the refrigeration output.
Since the early 70s, FRIGOBLOCK refrigeration units have been purely electrically powered using the FRIGOBLOCK alternator, driven via a V-belt from the truck engine. The alternator produces the same voltage and frequency as the European power supply system so that there is no problem to run FRIGOBLOCK units on a mains supply without the need for any extra equipment.

- permit the installation of heat exchangers with larger surfaces. This reduces the temperature differences in the refrigeration system which, in turn, extends the life of the refrigeration compressor and of other components.
- Avoids any critical increase of condenser temperature due to heat emitted by the engine = more refrigera-tion capacity.
- Enables the complete integration of the evaporators in the refrigeration system and double-deck loading of goods up to the bulkhead.
- Reduces wear by up to 50% in comparison with the start-stop mode of the diesel engine.
For applications demanding an independent diesel drive FRIGOBLOCK offers a chassis mounted fully encapsulated, splash-proof diesel generator set which is separate from the refrigeration machine. Today, the FRIGOBLOCK diesel generator set is as reliable as the alternator driven sys-tem and therefore exceeds the reliability of conventional diesel driven products.

The electric drive of the refrigeration unit has always offered the advantage that the alternator already creates 400 V voltage at about 60% of the nominal motor speed of the truck – corresponding to 100% of the FRIGOBLOCK refrigeration capacity – and thus the electric motors supply the refrigeration components with sufficient output. In case of conventional refrigeration technology, the remote control measures the temperature in the loading compartment and switches off the com-pressor when the preset temperature is reached. If the temperature in the loading compartment rises, the re-mote controller switches on the compressor and thus the cold production again. This technology has been working for over 30 years.
In case of the inverter technology, a frequency converter changes the frequency and electrical voltage. 3-phase motors react to frequency differences with speed changes. The inverter can accordingly vary the speeds of each individual electric motor individually from 500 to 2,000 rpm as required. The electronics calculate the current requirement from various parameters and sensor values and send the signal to adjust the right frequency. The re- frigeration unit can thus maintain the nominal tempera-ture even more precisely with a low energy consumption.

Crossflow fans across the entire width of the body: Longest airthrow and constant maximum air volume of more than 8,500 m3/h (FK 35i: 10,000 m3/h). Uniform through-flow of the total vehicle box. Air discharge height only 100 mm, thus allowing double deck loading up to the bulkhead, 100% use of load space. Robust fan drive by direct-coupled 3-phase motors, no carbon brush or V-belt wear.
2 evaporators outside the body across the full vehicle width (FK 35i: 3 evaporators possible): For the first time no additional evaporators needed for multi-temp operation in longitudinally divided bodies. No danger of damaging evaporators or goods during loading/unloading the vehicle.
Independent defrosting of the evaporators within minutes: No interruption of the cooling cycle and no additional energy consumption due to the powerful 4-way heat pump system.
Extremely large evaporator and condenser sur-face areas: High efficiency, considerable extension of cooling periods between defrost cycles.

As comparative measurements undertaken by the Testing and Further Training Centre in Heat Pumps and Refrigeration Technology (Test- und Weiterbildungszentrum Wärmepumpen und Kältetechnik, TWK-Karlsruhe) on behalf of FRIGOBLOCK showed in 2010, the refrigerant R410A has already in an one-stage refrigeration circuit a higher energy efficiency compared with CO2 manufacturer’s data.
