As quickly as possible, gather some plumber's putty, a cloth and some waterproof duct tape.

■ Use the cloth to clean any surrounding moisture or any dirt or debris that may affect the impact of your repair.

■ Using a thick layer of plumber's putty, cover the leak until all instances of escaping water have been cleared.

■ When the putty is stable, leave it to dry for about five to six hours.

■ Now that the pipe is completely dry, wrap the area with waterproof tape such as duct tape.

■ Once you are confident that the leak has been plugged, try turning your water supply back on.
