Fall 2011

Dear Readers,

As the new Vice President and Chief Information Officer for the

Division of Information Technology, I am looking at technology as one of the fundamental tools that will take our University “Worlds Ahead”. We have entered an era where more than ever,

technology is reshaping and improving higher education as a whole. This new era presents us with challenges and

opportunities. The challenge to provide our University community with the latest in technological advances and the opportunity to graduate students that will succeed in tomorrow’s

world.

This issue of “DoIT now” includes articles on some of the latest technology initiatives which we have rolled out in the last few months. These include Mobile Enrollment for students, a

more secure and encrypted wireless network, and our graduation success initiative called mymajor.fiu.edu .

I hope that you find this newsletter useful and informative.

Thank you for reading this issue of “DoIT now”.

Mobile Enrollment is a new service that is offered to our FIU students through FIU

mobile. Using their Smartphones, students can now log on through m.fiu.edu with their MyAccounts credentials and access their FIU Enrollment Shopping Cart and

much more. With Mobile Enrollment students have the ability to:

View their FIU Enrollment Shopping Cart

Add / remove classes from their Cart Enroll for and drop classes

A social integration feature was added so that students can share their class schedules with their friends on Facebook and Twitter. This new feature also allows

students to email directly through their FIU mobile. This service is keeping students “Worlds Ahead.”

It is no secret that we sometimes end up

off-task during work hours. Therefore, it is important that you keep your work

computer and your personal information safe by knowing the following policies:

Digital Millennium Copyright Act Policy states, “No users of the

University’s IT Resources shall download, upload, or distribute in any fashion, copyrighted material in

any form except as permitted under copyright law”. This means that

sharing copyrighted materials in any way, including via e-mail or peer-to-peer sharing, is illegal on FIU

property. FIUnet Acceptable Use Policy

states, “By logging into this system, you agree to abide by all

applicable federal, state and local laws, State of Florida Board of Governors rules, and University

rules, regulations and policies.” Under the “FIUnet Acceptable Use

Policy”, the following is prohibited on FIU computers: working on

commercial or profit-making

enterprises; sharing system passwords; using another person’s

account; and defaming, harassing, intimidating, or threatening others online.

Data Stewardship Procedures states, “University employees,

students and authorized users of the University’s IT … shall access and use highly sensitive data only

as may be strictly necessary in the performance of their job or role at

the institution and in accordance with all applicable state and federal laws.”

In addition, all University-owned devices that are subject to virus

infection and are connected to the University network must have

anti-virus software running.

In an age where more of your

personal information is available online than ever before, the

Division of Information Technology is continually at work to keep your identity safe. This fall semester, the

N e t w o r k E n g i n e e r i n g & Telecommunications Department

removed FIUAIR and one-click guest access, replacing them with three wireless networks: FIUSECURE,

F I U V I S I T O R , a n d FIU_Login_Information. These new

SSIDs (or service set identifiers, essentially the name of the wireless network) are now available to faculty,

staff, students and visitors at the University.

FIUSECURE is an encrypted, secure

network that is available to all faculty, staff, and students with a MyAccounts username and password.

Wireless network access is also available to visitors at our campuses

via the FIUVISITOR wireless network, an encrypted network that is accessible to anyone by creating a

Guest ID and password. Our third new SSID, FIU_Login_Information, was

created in order to direct users to the appropriate network and to help those

who need assistance logging on to

either FIUSECURE or FIUVISITOR.

For more information, simply choose the FIU_Login_Information SSID on your wireless device while on campus or stay

FIU continues the process of transitioning its payroll system from ADP’s

Comprehensive Outsourcing Solutions to PeopleSoft’s Human Capital Management System (HCM). As the transition moves towards its scheduled completion, the

PantherSoft HR implementation team has been diligently working on testing, training, configuring and designing the new system. Once the system goes live January 2012, all employees will be able to login through the MyFIU portal,

my.fiu.edu, with their MyAccounts credentials to access their employee self-service transactions.

To prepare for this transition, the Division of Human Resources is offering training sessions, both online and in-person, to all employees. We encourage all employees

to attend these sessions in order to familiarize themselves with the new system and available transactions, such as managing time and leave. For more information on

the project and to view and register for training, visit http://panthersoft.fiu.edu/hr .

The Division of IT recognizes that students often feel

overwhelmed in their attempts to graduate college on time. For this reason, the PantherSoft Campus Solutions

Team has created “My Major”, an easy-to-use, comprehensive resource with information on FIU’s undergraduate academic programs.

MyMajor, which is the first phase of the PantherSoft

Team’s “Graduation Success” project, provides detailed program descriptions for prospective and current students on FIU’s undergraduate academic programs. It also

contains important information on admission specifications for both four-year and two-year transfer students,

including GPA and credit requirements. Information on job and wage outlook is included.

Employment trends such as projected incomes of graduates who successfully complete each program are

posted on MyMajor. This information will present students with a clear understanding of what to expect during their

academic tenure as well as provide them with an outlook on their prospective marketability.

To access My Major, prospective and current students can visit http://mymajor.fiu.edu and search for their potential

or current academic program.

Protecting your identity is more important than ever, since today’s thieves are not only going

after physical items, but also targeting individuals and hijacking their identities. Being a victim of identity theft can have a lasting and detrimental effect on your credit and can take years to

repair. To avoid being a victim: 1. be aware of online phishing scams, 2. create strong passwords using special characters and change them regularly (never share them with anyone or write them down), 3. monitor your credit report, 4. only keep the essentials in your wallet or

purse, 5. opt out of credit card offers, and 6. shred your documents.

For more information on how to protect your identity, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website at http://www.ftc.gov/idtheft .
