one hour Saturday night!

& Globally”

As we begin this season of Lent, we are called to a time of prayer and self-examination. The 40-day period, beginning on Ash Wednesday and concluding on Holy Saturday signifies to believers the time of temptation Jesus spent in the desert prior to beginning his public ministry.

If you have made plans for this time of Lent that involve fasting or some other form of self-denial, my prayer is that God will be your ever—present help. As a congregation, we will be cooperating with our Annual Conference and distributing the “World Lenten Hunger” calendar and prayer/devotional guides. You may find these to be of great help as you consider how blessed we truly are.

Additionally, I invite you to join with me during this period in reading (or re—reading) a great Christian classic entitled, “The Way of a Pilgrim.” This small book comes to us from the Russian Orthodox tradition and focuses on the life of prayer –specifically what is known as “The Jesus Prayer.” The journey described within the pages of this small volume remind us what it means to “pray without ceasing” and the sacrifice required by

“taking up the cross.”

I offer this sample --the first paragraph in order to entice you:

“By the grace of God I am a Christian man, by my actions a great sinner, and by my calling a homeless wanderer of the humblest birth who roams from place to place. My worldly goods are a knapsack with some dried bread in it on my back, and in my breast—pocket a Bible. And that is all…..”

Copies of “The Way of a Pilgrim” will be ordered and made available on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings at the desk in the reception area by the office. Please feel free to pick one up and join us in this journey toward the resurrection that is Easter!

Confirmand Austin StovallMy name is Austin Stovall and I was born on July 2, 1999 in Memphis, TN. I have four sisters and two brothers. I lived in Batesville, MS for most of my life. I like to play on the computer, watch TV, when I get the chance. My school work in Batesville wasn’t the best, but here in Jackson I’ve improved. My whole life I have aced history. I have 12 books on war and history. I’m the smartest in about five of the social studies classes. On December 20th I moved here and am loving it.

Sharing Christ’s Love With Others

Save your Campbell Soup labels! Margie Thompson faithfully saves her soup labels for Reelfoot Rural Ministries, a mission outreach supported by FUMC. Want to help?

Notes of Appreciation“A BIG heartfelt thank you to my FUMC family. Thank you for the prayers, food, loving cards, and personal encouragements after the death of my father and for your continuing support while Dave and I deal with the terminal cancer of our daughter in law, Cissy Shires. I have definitely felt your love.

My entire family lives out of state, so at times I miss them terribly. Through your awesome out reach of love towards me I have found a loving family at FUMC. Words cannot express what this has meant to me. God bless FUMC.”

Niki Shires

Home from the Hospital Ministry“Thank you for the delicious soup, muffins, and pies. The soup was some of the best I have ever had. I understand this is part of a ministry which really “reaches out” to church members. That is part of what makes FUMC such a great church.“

Best regards, Tom Stallings
