The Prayer Ministry Team would like to invite/challenge you to join us as we take time for prayerful reflection during Lent. We are asking ourselves some hard questions and invite you to reflect on these questions as well. How am I reflecting the love of Christ to those I meet each day in my family, work, or leisure? How are we the Body of Christ reflecting the love of Christ to one another and to those outside the walls of the church? How has God gifted me for the ministry of the church and am I using those gifts?

In I Corinthians12 and Ephesians 4:1-16, we are reminded that as Christians we are part of the Body of Christ with Christ as the head of this body. Each part of the body is important, each part has a function; yet, each part is different. The body cannot function properly unless all the parts are present and working together. We have each been given gifts(s) by God for the purpose of building up the Body of Christ

and enabling the ministry of the church. Let us work together in unity and love as we seek to grow into “. . . maturity to the measure of the full stature of Christ.” (Eph. 4:13c)

May each of us as individuals and collectively as the Body of Christ be blessed and renewed through our Lenten reflections.

The Prom CollectionSupport what our youth are doing by helping Gabby Maxwell in collecting formal dresses in all sizes, lengths and colors and shoes for girls in Madison County that can't afford prom dresses. We know this is an exciting time for girls but it can be really sad for girls who don't have access to a dress, shoes or money to get them. We want all young women to feel beautiful for their big dance! If you would like to donate dresses, contact Gabby or Katlyn Maxwell.

Youth Spring Retreat has been cancelled.

Come get out of the “grind” and spend an hour at Coffee and Conversation. All men are welcomed!

You won’t want to miss hearing Danny Luc, who escaped from Vietnam in the 1970’s in a boat, tell his amazing story. Danny Luc is a Chinese/Vietnamese Christian and author of “Freedom at All Costs”. Danny will share the story of his personal journey through the horrors of the Vietnam War and the challenges of organizing and implementing a boat escape for his family and friends from Saigon to safety on an island in Indonesia to becoming a successful citizen of the United States.

FUMC members, Barbara and Emmett Barker, were among his initial sponsors. As awesome as is the story of the escape from Vietnam, equally amazing are the uplifting lives Danny and his family have experienced during their 35 years in America. You will be caught up in the wonderment of the possibilities that this indeed could be one of God’s intervention moments in the human experience! Danny Luc thinks so!

Cataract Concerns

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s clear, natural lens, which lies behind the iris (the colored part of the eye) and the pupil (the black circle that changes size) in your eye. Normally, light enters thru the pupil, is bent (refracted) thru the lens; the image is sent to your brain via an optic nerve branch and VOILA – sight! When the lens becomes cloudy, light isn’t refracted properly and the person is said to have a cataract. Cataracts rank #1 in causes of blindness worldwide.

A cataract begins as a small area first appearing as mild blurred vision similar to the effect of haze. Sunlight or lamplight may seem too bright and colors become dull. Glare from oncoming headlights make night driving difficult.

No one knows for sure why cataracts form but there are contributing factors besides aging. Causes include: previous eye surgery, steroid use, high blood pressure, diabetes, radiation from sun and X-ray exposure, severe nearsightness and my favorite vice to bash: smoking. When symptoms commence, strong readers or good lighting may help; but, you should think about surgery when cataracts begin to interfere with daily life.

Cataract removal with intraocular lens implantation is the most frequently performed surgery in the US. During the simple procedure the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, plastic lens to restore vision. Gone are the days when cataract surgery meant you had to wear thick “Mr. Magoo” glasses. Most patients wear drugstore reading glasses afterward.

But oh my, how people dread cataract surgery. Worries about someone “messing around in my eye or what if I blink in the middle of the surgery” are common concerns. These are ungrounded fears. Most likely you will receive a light medication to relax, plus drops to “numb” your eye. Blinking isn’t an issue either; a delicate instrument remedies lid movements. You will be talking to your surgeon the entire time, perhaps even listening to the radio. The process takes about 15 minutes. Unless your doctor patches the eye you will be able to see on the stretcher ride back to your room. I have found patients to be fearful for the first eye and practically running down the hall to check in for the second one. It’s one of those procedures you can actually look forward to.

Don’t fret if you develop cataracts. The new lens will allow you to look around at God’s wonders and see them in a way you haven’t in years. Who knows? You may look ten pounds thinner, or at least you can tell yourself you do!

Operation InasmuchOperation Inasmuch Day, at the Andrews Chapel campus…a great day of outreach to the Huntersville community! Twenty volunteers and three firemen canvassed neighboring homes on Saturday, February 28 to offer free smoke detectors to those in need. Door-to-door visits were made to 110 homes within a two mile radius of the church. There were twelve requests for smoke detectors and “Sorry we missed you cards” were left at sixty-five homes. Invitation cards to worship at Andrews Chapel and to join in the Easter Eggstravaganza” on Palm Sunday, March 29 were distributed to families. Contact information was gathered from the visits for future invitations to events at the Andrews Chapel campus.

Many thanks to Kathy Abrams and T. Robert Hill who coordinated this successful mission ministry!
