Fire.Cloud EDITION 3 / AUGUST 2010 welcome... Hello and welcome to the August edition of our newsletter. Our big news this month is that we have found a home for our first ever Fire.Cloud headquarters! We have moved into the Hidden Lane in Finnieston, Glasgow. It’s a great place with loads of character and we’ve been making ourselves at home over the last two weeks. It has a cobbled street, is surrounded by creative businesses and is right next to a vintage teashop selling some serious baking. What more could we need? Thank you for all your recommendations and prayers while we made this decision; your help has made all the difference. In other news, our new Fire.Cloud film team (Julie Mailley, James Fleming and Craig Meighan) have started dreaming up some exciting ideas. They'll be out and about soon so watch out for more about what they’re up to over the coming months. We are also delighted to be featured in the latest edition of Business Women Scotland magazine. NAME: Tracy Milligan ROLE AT FC: Featured Artist (Singer & Musician) TRACY’S MOST MEMORABLE FC MOMENT: “It has to have been the ‘First Gig’ in Montgomery’s. You could almost reach out and touch the curiosity, anticipation, nerves, excitement, warmth and support that filled the room that night. To see this selfless and carefully crafted idea grow from that small intimate gathering to our Lentfest concert involving over 100 young people, to now, having it’s very own premises, is just incredible. I feel proud and blessed to be a part of Fire.Cloud’s journey so far.” FC SAYS: “Tracy has one of those beautiful singing voices that makes you just stop and listen. She has been an amazing support to Fire.Cloud every step of the way since our very first event in 2007. She performed solo that night for the first time ever and embodied the Fire.Cloud vision of taking a risk when life offers you an opportunity. Her courage, faith and sense of fun make her irreplaceable. Newly arrived in Bucharest, she'll be our eyes and ears in Europe for the coming year. Good luck Tracy!” happy birthday to... us! On Friday 30th of July we celebrated two years since we officially set up Fire.Cloud as an organisation. The party was a great success and it was lovely to see so many of you turn out to celebrate with us. Thank you for all your continuing support and good company. The unanimous feedback has been that the birthday cakes were quite a hit. We’ll keep that in mind for next year! ‘‘ ’’ ‘‘ sparks of imagination Since joining Fire.Cloud as an intern in May, Glasgow based artist Julie Mailley has been creating an artwork inspired by a quote attributed to St Ignatius: Go forth and set the world on fire. We unveiled this striking image as part of our birthday celebrations and it has been a conversation starter ever since. Watch out for what she’s making next… research One of the big things we do at Fire.Cloud is social research. It doesn’t always make the newsletter headlines but this month we have exciting researchy stuff to report. Early findings from one of our ongoing studies have just been published in the Scottish Journal of Healthcare Chaplaincy (Vol.13. No.1. 2010). This study looks at the relationship between faith and medicine within the NHS and what it all means for healthcare chaplains. This is one of a number we’re working on that examine how religion, belief and spirituality are expressed in professional environments. The aim of our research programme is to learn more about some of those big questions facing society and to promote understanding. If you think science and faith are always worlds apart, check out this paper, it’s an interesting read. Let us know what you think! the big draw This October we are going to be participating in The Big Draw. This is an initiative by Campaign for Drawing which raises the profile of drawing as a tool for thought, creativity, social and cultural engagement. We are designing a weekend workshop where primary aged children can come along for a few hours to draw, paint and create. We’ll have more details in next month’s newsletter but we are currently looking for adult volunteers to help us run the workshop. If you would like to get involved we would love to hear from you.
