Project A

As it has been told in the last news-letter the third-year students are all

working on a project. At the beginning of the module Media Productions, the third years can choose between differen projects. This module the students could choose between two projects. This article gives some information about project A.

What kind op project are you and your group working on?My group and I are working on Project A. This project is about a book series. Pieter Stoer intends to publish a book series with the title ’’Kasper & Lumbricus’’. The series encompasses Friesland as a central theme as the series contains a lot of its history. The Oera Linda book is taken up together with friendship and the quest for truth. Pieter Stoer has sought advice and would like to determine which media product and through which social media the target audience can be reached best.

How did the research go regarding to the project? The research for this project went pretty well. We started on time and di-vided the tasks between all of the group members. We needed to research the target group of the book series Kasper & Lumbricus and find out how to reach this target group. We also needed to research what media product was suitable to promote this book series and on how we could promote this book series on social media.

What kind of media-product are you planning to create? We decided to create vlog. According to our research a vlog was the most popular media- product amongst our target group.

The idea is to use a vlog to turn the story of the book series in to a multimedia experience. The reader needs to get dragged into the story, not only while reading the book, but also when using other media. 50/50 produc-tions wants to turn Kasper & Lumbricus in something more than a book.

The concept tells the story of Kasper & Lumbricus from a new perspective: the perspective of a video logger that researches the story. The first vlog (video log) can for example be about the event of Kasper and Simon discovering the pot of gold. The vlog-ger does not know Kasper (or his friends) in person, but is intrigued by the mysterious events in and around Friesland

The rest content of the vlog is still a secret but I can guarantee it that it will be fun to watch.

Next week the vlog will be published on:

Sector: PrintInterview third-year manager

My name is Malte Hündling. I am 22 years old and I was born in Stuttgart,

Germany. I am a third year media and entertainment management student doing the international stream.

What are your impressions of the module so far?I think it is a great module. For us as third years as well as for the first years it is an experience that is very practical and close to the conditions in real working environment.

How is it for you to manage first year students?I like to manage the first years, since in most cases they are very motivated and curious. Many things are new to them. It is something different to be in the position to actually be able to teach them something. It is a good experience to swap roles for one module and be in the position where you have to lead by example.

What kind of challenges did you face so far?Honestly, the students in both groups that I had so far were really motivated and took a lot of self-initiative. The only real challenge was to guide them through the two weeks and give them some kind of structure. It has to be said that there was not really a big challenge for me during the work with the groups I had so far.

What is the funniest moment so far in this module? The funniest moment must have been on the day on which almost nobody was in the learning company and we (the floor- and group managers) decided to play Call of Duty with around six to eight people. Quite random, but always a lot of fun.

What are your expectations for the rest of the module? For the rest of the module I am not in the position of a group manager anymore. My task is going to be to work on the lay-out of the next @MEM and MEM@work. Therefore I have to say that I expect a much different experience with different kind of challenges during the last weeks of the module.

Newest @MEM version

New MEM@WORK edition

@MEM

During print, first year students have to become creative and organize

themselves and each other within the group. Good teamwork is crucial in order to meet the deadlines and be able to optimize and edit everything to reach a result that is as perfect as possible. Furthermore it is important to learn the basics of design programs such as Photoshop and InDesign. Besides from that it is essential to get a creative view on things in order to be able to design covers in a way that attracts the desired end user. All of this is important because the students have to create their own magazine called ‘@MEM’. This is a magazine about media and entertainment made by students for students.

MEM@Work

MEM@Work is a digital magazine that is providing an insight into the life of MEM

students currently doing their intern-ships. The magazine has separate rubrics devoted to students doing their internships in the Netherlands and Germany, which represent the majority, as well as a rubric about students around the globe. Furthermore, there is a rubric called“Troublesome“, which explores the difficulties and possible hardships stu-dents can expect at their upcoming work placements. The magazine is conceived as a means to help current students of MEM to gain an insight of what can be expected from the internship, learn from the experience of fellow students and help understand the media and entertainment industry deeper.

Project B

As the first-year students already might have noticed, the third-year managers

are also working on a project for themselves. As it has been told in the last newsletter the third-year students had a choice between two projects. This article gives some information about project B. This project is about creating an evidence-based media product that gets organizations to reflect criticially on the consequences of their social media use.

The project itself roughly consists of two parts. Part one is about the research. The students have to monitor the Facebook pages of three different museums and reflect critically on the content the organizations place. They monitor the page once a day during a seven day period. When this is done they go on to the next part.

Part two is the creation of the evidence-based media product. This media product has to show organizations how to use their Facebook page in a proper way. For this newsletter we followed one group that is working on project B. We asked them what they are planning to do and they were willing to give us a little insight of what they were doing.

How did the research go regarding to the project? The research went pretty smooth actually. We divided the tasks between all of the groupmembers and everyone moni-tored two museums, except for our project manager, who monitored one. This monitoring was to find out how the muse-ums interact with their fans. After one week we had a pretty clear view about how the museums use their Facebook page.

What kind of media-product are you planning to create? We decided to create a short-film in the format of a news broadcast. Our idea was to get an anchor who is going to tell the viewers that there is a big crisis regarding to the Facebook usage of organizations. To make it look more professional we tried to get some native English speakers.

Fortunately, one of our groupmembers knows one English teacher very well and he asked him to be our anchor. Because we also needed a guest for our broadcast we asked an exchange-student from Australia. Next to this basic broadcast we also shot a scene inside the Fries Museum. In the film it has to look like that the anchorman is in a live-connection with the reporter on the scene in the Fries Museum.

After that, the news anchor is going to talk to a ‘victim’of the situation about what Facebook pages can change. This concludes the item.

Organizing a guest lecture

I’m Joris, 23 years old and started MEM in February 2013. This module i am hosting the

guest lecture together with Ellen and Thomas. The quest lecture of this module was about ‘Voetbal en Media’ given by Ard de Graaf.

Why did you choose to organize the guest lecture?Initially organizing the guest lectures was not an option, as there were not enough students to fill all the positions. However, there were turned out to be more students then expected. Therefore organizing the guest lectures was assignment to me as all the other options were already filled. I am not sure if I would have chosen to organize the guest lectures if it was an option, but I am glad I now got the experience.

What do you need to do to organize a guest lecture? For a start you need a good, inspiring guest that wants to come to Stenden and give a lecture about a media or entertainment related topic. This is not as easy as it sounds, as there is very limited time to organize the guest and do the promotion for this. But once a guest is arranged and a suiting topic is found, you need to think of how to market this person and topic, where the lec-ture will take place (how many people are likely to come), what is the best possible date (are there any other activities in or around the school that day), and several other aspects to make sure the guest lecture is a success.

What challenges did you face? The biggest challenge initially was finding a guest. After calling and mailing almost 20 possible people without success the level of motivation can fade a little, however once a guest does accept the offer and has time to come the motivation shoots right back up.

Another challenge we faced was time pressure; since we only confirmed the guest in week 4 and the lecture itself (after discussing this with the guest) would be in week 6, this left us with only 2 weeks to get the location, make a concept of what the presentation would be like, create posters and flyers based on that concept, print these and hand them out in the hallways. These 2 weeks, in combination with the other school things I still had going, were pretty stressful at times.

Would you do this again and why?Yes I would, I gained a lot of experience in setting up an event like this. It was really interesting to see what is all involved in making the lecture to a success. In addition, you work to a clear goal and it is very satisfying if that goal is reached.

What advice would you give to the next group that needs to organize a guest lecture? Try to plan ahead and do not postpone things, there is really not enough time for that. Make phone calls rather than emails. After a phone call people still like to have an email, but communication via phone is simply much quicker and more efficient. Also, think of what you write in the email, put in as much information as needed and do not think too lightly of it, the email can make or break the contact you have with the guests. Lastly start calling and emailing in week 1 already, the sooner a guest is confirmed the better, this leaves you with more time for proper promotion. The guest lecture will be subtitled and uploaded later this module.
