Final Painting Project

Found object painting with added texture

Page 2: Final painting project texture assemblage

Types of Texture

• P. 166-181, Art Fundamentals, Theory and Practice.

Page 3: Final painting project texture assemblage

Actual Texture: real thing, surface that can be experienced through the sense

of touch. It is not an illusion.

Page 4: Final painting project texture assemblage

Simulated Texture: looks “real”, but is not, convincing copy of surface texture

Page 5: Final painting project texture assemblage

Abstract Texture: derived from the appearance of an actual surface but rearranged and/or simplified by the

artist

Page 6: Final painting project texture assemblage

Invented Texture: imaginative texture, no source, decorative

Three Dimensional Applications of Texture

• ASSEMBLAGE: grouping actual items in a display. The items can be “found” or specially created.

• In Situ: natural position or in middle of room, instead of on wall.

*Also can incorporate onto a flat surface or use 3D item to paint on.

Found Object

• “Readymade”

Page 9: Final painting project texture assemblage

An object manufactured for some other purpose, presented by an artist as a work of art. Between 1914 and 1921, Marcel Duchamp (French, 1887-1968), who originated this concept, selected and signed, among others, a snow shovel, a comb, and a urinal. He occasionally altered readymades (sometimes called assisted readymades) — the most famous of which was a cheap reproduction of Mona Lisa on which Duchamp drew a mustache.

Your Assignment

• Using one or more found objects, either flat or 3 dimensional, create an original painting.

• Objects can be incorporated how you wish.

• Paint directly on the object/found surface, or attach objects, or assemble parts of objects, or paint on canvas and attach objects over paint…

• YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST 3 LAYERS

Matt Small’s work has strong urban roots. Painting directly onto found objects bringing physical elements of the city directly into his work. The people he paints are filmed anonymously on the streets of London. In this way, Matthew focuses on creating portrait painting at its best, when the identity of the sitter is of lesser importance than the power and insight of the piece.

Using trash to paint on is kind of a fun idea for found object art, especially when it is nice and funky street art. Rik Catlow (top pic) has a bit of a how to for the smashed can paintings here. And I love the pink art on smashed spray paint cans by Buff Monster (bottom pic).
