Welcome to Muncie “The Center of the Universe”, at least this is what I tell people when I refer to our wonderful city. If you really think about it, Muncie is not unlike many other communities in that we have our fair share of problems and issues. But people who are not from Muncie notice a warmth and pleasantness about our community that many times we don’t seem to recognize until we go somewhere that it’s not.

I have been a lot of places and have enjoyed visiting many wonderful cities, but failed to see the spirit of community that I see in Muncie. Is it everywhere in the city? No, but it’s growing. Don’t we have people here who are unemployed? Sure, but we also have a lot of jobs available for people who want to work. Do we have a shortage of revenue or funds in the city? Most definitely, but we also have many residents, foundations, and organizations who have learned to work together to make sure people have what they need. Is there racism in Muncie? Of course, but we have walls of division coming down every day and people engaged and committed to making each day better than the next.

There are a lot of good things happening here. They may not always be printed in the newspaper or get the attention they deserve, but they are happening. My challenge to you is to not let anyone say anything bad about Muncie without our saying what’s good about it. I’m sure we will find that the good will outweigh the bad.

A Letter from the President

President Frank T. Scott, Sr. We are slowly building an oasis in the food desert that is the Whitely Community. But a great deal more is needed. Whitely is a community experiencing an ongoing struggle with food insecurity. This struggle has been worsened by the closing of Marsh Supermarkets. “The closing of Marsh store locations in Muncie has put an even bigger strain on the availability of fresh produce, medicine and other household goods that the Whitely community and other neighborhoods are already thin on,” said Whitely’s Executive

Director, Ken Hudson. Kroger will open two stores but both will be on the North and West sides of Muncie (as is their Ruler store). Walmart is on the Northwest and far Southside of Muncie. And Meijer is on the far Northwest. There are no food stores in or near Whitely, no mini-markets or even a Village Pantry. The closest store is Aldi and the coming Fresh Thyme. Access to good nutritious affordable food is essential, especially fresh vegetables and fruit. There have been attempts to try and bring brick and mortar food markets to the Whitely area with no luck.

So, we on the Whitely Community Council, in partnership with Second Harvest, Minnetrista, Purdue Extension, Edible Muncie, Muncie Public Library (through Connection Corner), Ball State University, individual contributors of both money and goods as well as grantors like Old National Bank have been slowly but surely building an oasis in this food desert. The Whitely Community Food Pantry The pantry began in October of 2016. Second Harvest is the primary supplier of food to

the pantry. New Kingdom Builders also supplies some food for the pantry on a regular basis. Recently, Minnetrista has signed on to supply produce from its small garden to the pantry as well as apples from its orchard. They have also supplied lettuce and tomato plants for those wishing to home grow some vegetables. The pantry serves 50-60 households a month. It began serving the community twice monthly, once at Union Missionary Baptist Church and once at Harvest Christian Fellowship. Since November it is open once a month at Harvest

Christian Fellowship on the third Thursday of the month and is staffed by volunteers primarily from the Whitely Community who use the pantry and by others from the broader community. Purdue Extension provides instruction about nutrition and food preparation using the food supplied by Second Harvest at each pantry. The pantry is free and intended for use primarily by residents of the Whitely Community and WCC members. The pantry is also partnering with Ball State University to offer Cardinal Zumba, an exercise and nutrition program for Whitely residents to promote exercise and good nutrition aimed at improving the health of the community. This program will start on August 28 and be available twice weekly. Community Food Boxes The Whitely Community Food Pantry is partnering with the Muncie Public Library at Connection Corner to provide food free to the public via a food box that will be accessible to the public during the library’s open hours (Mon-Thurs, 10am-6pm). Connection Corner is the all-digital library in Whitely and is located at the corner of Elgin and Centennial, across from Longfellow Elementary. Minnetrista has agreed to supply any extra produce not supplied to the pantry for the food box and some canned goods, drinks and other food and non-food items will be provided by the Pantry as they become available. The idea for

I am so proud of the fact that we have been able to bring this food pantry to Whitely. There are so many households in need and to be able to assist with that need is wonderful. I am so grateful for the help of so

many incredible volunteers and supporters from across the community who have contributed to its success.

Residents in many communities often focus on divisions and differences instead of looking at similarities or ways to build bridges to unite and celebrate the place we all call home. Pies for Peace, a group of Delaware County likeminded individuals decided they wanted to get to know our community, our neighbors a little better and what better way to explore getting to know one another than over a piece of pie and conversation. The Pies for Peace is a group of volunteers with a long history of working and volunteering throughout the community. They recognize the work of so many of our fellow neighbors, friends and family members who work and have worked to make a difference in one another’s lives and the impact each individual has in contributing to this community. The simple idea of bringing people together to have a piece of pie and share conversation is our way of getting together. We have our meetings with this in mind as well, as each member gets to know one another a little better! We see it as a stepping-stone to start conversations about who we are, and what we share in common, all with the focus of getting to know and understand one another. It has worked well for the committee as we began in the fall and along the way we have made new friends and shared new ideas we want to share the experience with you We hope our Whitely neighbors will join us on September 9, at Canan Commons, 11:30 – 3:30 as we and the City of Muncie and Ivy Tech sponsor our Community Celebration of Colors, Flavors &

American Pie. The event is free, and you are invited to a piece of pie (baked by our own Delaware County IVY Tech culinary students) There will be family and children activities, entertainment from our very own talented community members, music and a Resource Fair showcasing social, educational, art and faith based institutions and businesses. There will be “Pie” themed activities, including a Pie Walk for children, a Pie Baking Contest for IVY Tech Culinary Students, and Celebrity Pie in the Face fundraiser- All proceeds going to Whitely Food Pantry. Come and have a piece of pie and make new friends. Let’s all celebrate the place we call home.! Bring your lawn chairs or blanket and stay awhile. In case of rain, the event will relocate to the downtown YMCA across the street. Hope to meet you there.

community Food Boxes was an idea conceived by Purdue Extension in conjunction with Edible Muncie who will also be working with other farmers to supply excess produce for this as well

as other food boxes in the community in the near future. Purdue extension will also supply some utensils like spatulas, can openers etc. The food box at Connection Corner will be available starting within the next two weeks. “Libraries are about access and opportunity, so to me it makes perfect

sense that Connection Corner would try to provide access to nutritious food at a time when this neighborhood’s access has become so limited,” said Rebecca Parker, who oversees the Connection Corner digital library branch. Tree Hill Farms

Whitely has been working closely with Darby Livingston of Tree Hill Farms to bring their mobile market to the Whitely area. We are so pleased to have the delicious organically grown foods Tree Hill

Farms will provide available to Whitely Residents. The mobile market will serve not only Whitely residents but anyone in the wider community who wishes to enjoy this healthy and flavorful food. This is the closest we can get to having a grocery in the community. Their commitment to changing their model to allow them to serve underserved areas is a credit to Darby and his family as caring human beings and dedicated farmers who care about the health of the community. “Our Flavor Fresh Mobile

We are proud to announce that we are now WIC approved and will accept SNAP as well. We will accept cash or credit cards too. We reworked our business model to serve primarily underserved communities and have worked hard and are eager to provide fresh, flavorful local foods to the Whitely Community at reasonable prices,” said Livingston.

We encourage everyone to take advantage of their presence and help make this endeavor successful. Encourage people throughout Muncie to visit the mobile market. It will bring people into our community, meet an unmet need, and its success could help encourage other local business ventures.

Open every Saturday 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at the Muncie Area Career Center, 2500 N. Elgin St. WIC approved and will accept SNAP as well. Will accept cash or credit cards.

The Future We have accomplished so much since starting

the pantry in October with the help and support of people throughout the Muncie Community. But this is only a start. An ultimate goal will be to have a brick and mortar grocery in the community as

well. There are many possibilities. We need your help as volunteers, contributors, patrons and supporters. You are the seeds that will help us grow a garden in the oasis and make sure that in the future no-one will refer to Whitely as a food desert. Working together, hand-in-hand, with people from Whitely and throughout Muncie, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.

Being a resident of Whitely for over 40 years I can personally identify

with the inconvenience and appreciate the stress and

aggravation that is associated with not having access to a grocery store

anywhere near where you live. What we are trying to do in Whitely is provide food sources

that are readily available to not only our residents but our surrounding neighborhoods.

I am Rev. Jonathan C. Mitchell, and I am the Pastor of the Kirby Ave. Church of God, located at 701 E. Kirby Ave. It is our honor to work so closely with, and support the Whitely Neighborhood Association. Mr. John C. Webb is a long-time resident of the Whitely Neighborhood, and a member of Kirby Ave. Church of God. Recently, Mr. Webb (Elder Webb, or Brother Webb as he is known in our church family) celebrated his 90th birthday! While folk reaching the age of 90 is not all that unusual, what is rather unusual about Brother Webb is how active and dedicated he remains at the tender age of 90, to his church and in his community! Brother Webb regularly attends church services, as well as conducts services and visitation with residents at Signature Nursing Facility and the Woodlands, which he has been doing for the past 10 years. And on the occasion when he cannot find a ride, Brother Webb will not hesitate to avail himself of the MITS to fulfill his ministerial duties. On Sunday, July 30, the members of the Kirby Ave.

Elder John Webb Celebrates 90 Years

Church honored Elder Webb with a citation, and by serving a special birthday cake and ice-cream after the morning services. Elder Webb is always ready and willing to share from his vast store of wisdom with anyone who seeks it! He truly has a heart for serving the Lord and ministry. If you are interested in meeting and sharing with this mighty man of God, on Sunday mornings from 9:30 at Sunday School, or 10:45 at Morning services at Kirby Ave. Church of God, he just might be still long enough to catch up with him! If you do, prepare yourself for a blessing!

The Buley Community Center continues to prosper in 2017 as we received multiple grants again this year, including a $75,000 grant from the Ball Brothers Foundation to renovate our gymnasium, restrooms, and other areas of the Center. The renovations have already begun and will be completed by the beginning of August. Watch for a grand re-opening event! Additional grants received included $9,294 from the United Way, and $40,000 from the Ball Brothers Foundation. The Buley Center and its partners, the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie, YMCA, Ross Community Center, and MOM, also received grants for the AIM program this year, which included an $80,000 grant from the Ball Brothers Foundation, a $40,000 grant from the Community Foundation, $19,526 from the United Way, and $10,000 from the Community Development Block Grant. Special thanks also go to MITS who donated over $40,000 of in-kind services to transport children for AIM and the Center.

In more good news, the Buley Center held its 2nd Annual Golf Outing & Fundraiser on Sunday, June 4, at Maplewood Golf Course in Muncie. Thank you to the teams, sponsors, and volunteers who made this year’s event a greater success than last year. The event provided not only food and beverages, but also opportunities for the participants to win prizes through 50/50 raffles, baskets, and other auction items, as well as opportunities to showcase golf skills through longest drive, closest to the pin, and putting competitions. All proceeds benefit the Buley Center and the Whitely Community Council. The Buley Center is proud to be a part of the Whitely Community. If you would like to participate in what the Buley Center has to offer, you can reach us by email at [email protected] or by phone at 765-747-4769. Adults and teens can watch the documentary and take part in a post-film discussion in the library's
