1927 : The first radio station
1968 : TV broadcasting
• 180.000 hours video,
• 120.000 hours audio,
• 25.000 image
1 inch, Betacam-SP, DigitalBetacam, D3, 16 mm & 35 mm film, tape formats etc..
Robotic Tape Library
LTO-6 cartridges
• Central Broadcast Archive Department was established2001
• Decision on Metadata schemes and workflow design2002
• First generation MAM System was installed,
• Digitization started with 8 channel ingest stations, rough cut outgest
capability, LTO-2 tape technology
• Highres , lowres quality and keyframes, Detailed Cataloging andsubclipping, Available for intranet users, Tape Library without back up
2004 -
2009
Increasing costs of system maintenance,
( every 5 years hardware becomes out of date)
Need of new functions such as;
automated qc,
watermarking,
increasing process capabilities,
multi format support,
integration with other systems
batch operations
etc..

--- Editing different formats consecutively in the same EDL
--- Quality Control of the material
--- Watermarking on outgest
---Batch operations (Request as a group of materials in one step
etc.)
--- Restoration Functions
---Metadata Copy from one material to another and Batch
Cataloging
--- Reporting tools for each action
---Integration of other TRT areas/locations: News, Postproduction,
Istanbul etc …
--- Define different authorization level users (integrated with LDAP)
--- Off-site tape library back-up with a capacity of 100.000 hours

Check your ;
◦ Archive Formats (Video SD / HD / 2K / 4K , Audio, Image, Document etc.)
◦ Input and Output Formats.. ( only one format support ? / Multi Format Support ? )
◦ Ingest Flow ( only capture? / File ingest? / Integration with other systems? )
◦ Overall Workflow (interfaces, mandatory fields, user rights etc..)
◦ Cataloging Rules (Detailed Forms / Subclips / Form Copy ?)
◦ Review Roles and Authorization
◦ User interfaces, workflows, metadata fields and value lists should be able to be
modified by the system admin
Check your ;
Metadata Fields, Valuelists, classifications etc.
If needed, change metadata models and thesaurus
Update your valuelist
Check possible fields which may change (like Department Names)
If needed, Make Mapping of the values
(ex: News Department News and Sports Department etc.)
During Migration Correct Spelling Mistakes (studetn, stundent etc.. Student)
As a result; Clean metadata before or after the migration,
After Installation of Hardware and Software, you can start migration
Current system should be UP and RUNNING
Keep your Database Admin until the Project finishes
Take a detailed Report for Archive data, open flows and closed flows
Study Database for current flows and metadata
Migrate a small amount of archive material & test it
Correct the mistakes, try again..
Test always with real material & real users
Migrate the current MAM system: Highres and Lowres Media, Keyframes, Cataloging and Metadata
TRT Migration : 50.000 workflows, 20.000 assets of 11.000 hours with cataloging information and
metadata have been migrated
Format Problems
Standarts are not standart ..
Incompatible codes create problems
You may need normalization
It takes a long time to copy between systems
And normalization also takes a long time
Duration of migration depends on the number of drives
Keyframe Problems
Be careful about;
◦ Both systems keep keyframes as timecode or picture?
◦ Both systems keep timecodes as frame or miliseconds?
◦ Both systems uses 24 frames or 25 frames for one second
Audio channels problems
Check if you can hear audio channels seperately
Web based systems face problems with browser updates
New system should be compatible with such updates
User resistance : New Interfaces
◦ Archiving
◦ Cataloging
◦ Search
◦ Outgest interface changes
Training of Users: Takes time
◦ Technical Staff
◦ Archivist
◦ Catalogers
◦ Managers
Each system should be UP until acceptance
Until the end of project, all additional data also should be migrated
Clearly define everthing (formats, media workflows, integrations etc.) in the tender
although it seems to be too detailed !!!
Expert knowledge in current MAM system is the key for a proper migration
(database, workflows, formats should be examined in detail by the integrator company. )
Preserving the data in the old MAM system is very critical
New functions brings more complexity.
User resistance and need of education
Technology does not stay as it is
TRT may need migration in 2 years to implement new Projects & Functions like ;
◦ Archive TV channel hosted by Archive Dept.
◦ Public access over the web Project
◦ Face recognition Project
◦ Speech to text Project
◦ 2 K / 4K format support
◦ Fast file transfer over long distance .. etc..
To achieve these projects, we have to adopt new technologies
◦ Users always requests new fuctions but old interfaces
◦ New functions brings complexity
◦ First system is also a migration from tape to robotics
◦ Users resist to the first system and then get used to it
◦ They will get used to the new one also
◦ Are you using computers? Internet? Mobile phones? Which you did not use 30-50
years ago? Can you give up them?
