Recent events in neighboring communi-ties and along Jog Road, compel me to remind our homeowners to secure their homes and vehicles at all times. Criminal pressure continues to grow outside our gates and we must remain ever vigilant on the security front. OLD MARSH BOOK GROUP

THANK YOU

Old Marsh, and the members of the Old Marsh Book Group, would like to thank Mr. Jim Rooney for his long-time leader-ship. His dedication, and sense of humor, elevated and educated the group and in-creased participation.

DOG LEASHING Please be reminded that pets must be leashed when walked, and picked up after. Thank you for your con-sideration of all within our gates.

BATTERY RECYCLING Many of you can be commended for replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors on an easy to re-

member anniversary date. However, if you save the bat-teries in groups to be recycled, please be aware that the terminals should be covered with electrical tape during storage. Otherwise, when the terminals from one battery touch those of another, heat and resulting fire can occur. Don’t let good deeds turn into bad - take necessary pre-cautions.

SPPED LIMIT

As most of us are distracted with our cell phones, coffee cups, and the like, it is even more important to take care on the Old Marsh roadways. The speed limit is 25

mph, not only for safety, but as a way for us to remember to go slow, take a breath, wave to your friends, and to enjoy the spectacular marsh and golf course views.

JOG ROAD LITTER CLEANUP

Many of you have expressed concern about litter and other debris on Jog Road to the north of the Old Marsh gate. Your HOA staff is in regular contact

with the county about this area. Due to budget cuts, this area is only attended to once a month. Reports by resi-dents themselves may go a long way towards getting more attention to this area. The contact and phone num-ber is: Andrew Hertel, PB Co. Streetscapes AICP Man-ager 561-684-4100.

  SCAM ALERT

FPL reports that scammers are targeting utility customers with e-mails that look like monthly

bills from utility companies. Do not open or click on them, or provide any personal information

In general, do not open any e-mails, or especially at-tachments, from anyone you do not know

RESIDENT WELLNESS

The best valentine gift you can give your family is a commitment to take car of your own heart.

If you have high cholesterol, are at risk for heart disease or just want to follow a healthy diet, see what the Thera-peutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet can do for you. The TLC diet is a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol, high-fiber diet. It is targeted at people who already have high cholesterol levels and are considered high-risk. The goal is to help reduce your cholesterol level and cut your chance of heart disease, future heart attacks and/or other complications. This could include diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

If you are short of time to exercise, even a quick 10 minute workout can benefit your heart. The American Heart Association recommends all adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. This can be broken down to 30 minutes, 5 times a week, or 20 minutes daily.

For information on the TLC diet, or some suggestions for quick routines, click on the link from the newsletter e-

mail, or ask Deborah in the HOA office for a copy.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TRAINING (CERT) Training Exercise January 11, 2014

Deborah Price represented Old Marsh at the recent CERT training exercise held in Boca Raton. The exercise simulat-ed a community’s response to a tornado that did significant damage. In the scenario, first responders were busy in oth-ers areas and as often happens in real life, localities were left to their own devices until professional teams are available.

The day included a briefing, four segments where trainees refreshed their skills as shown below, and a de-briefing or “hot wash”. The instructors were CERT professionals, Palm Beach County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) staff, and first responders. They came from around the state to conduct the exercise.

The event was exceptionally well run and appreciated by all. Knowledge gained will be shared with other Department Heads and will be integrated into the Old Marsh emergency response protocols.

Morning Briefing: Scenario description with the schedule and procedures for the day.

.

Fire Suppression: A hands-on review of fire suppression and extinguisher types

Search/Rescue: Search of debris-strewn area, simulated power lines down, triage and first aid on victims.

Medical Operations: The group practiced triage procedures and emergency first aid. Inflatable dummies were strapped with rub-ber “wounds” and tagged with vital signs.

STATE SYMBOL - PIE

Key Lime Pie was designated the official state pie of Florida in 2006. Key limes are smaller and more perishable, but also more tart and aromatic than the common Persian limes seen year round in most U.S. grocery stores.

Key lime pie is a dessert made from the juice of key limes, egg yolks, and canned sweetened condensed milk. The pie is topped with golden brown meringue or a dot of whip cream. The filling of the pie is yellow rather than green (the juice of key limes is pale yellow and of course the egg yolks are yellow as well). Traditional cooks frown on the practice of adding food color-ing to give the pie a green color.

Key lime trees can be grown in containers, or, when planted in the ground, grown into a small tree. They do well in Old Marsh.

Our very warm winter came to a sudden stop with a few cold nights in January. Although the weather forecast may predict low tempera-tures in the upper 30’s to low 40’s, our isolated location typically re-sults in temperatures 3-5 degrees colder than the forecast. That mi-nor temperature difference, in combination with a lack of insulat-ing cloud cover and the absence of wind can result in the formation of frost in select areas. We took pre-cautions and covered annuals and sensitive plants with frost cloth. While the process can be labor in-tensive, it is still more cost effec-tive than replacing plants injured or killed by frost.

Our featured plant this month is Farfugium japonicum ‘Giganteum’, aka the Giant Leop-ard Plant. The leaves of this Farfugium can reach 15” across, on a plant that reaches a size of approximately 36”x36”. While the foliage is interesting enough, it is
