Somewhere, the season for swimsuits is fl eeting. Somewhere, restaurant patios sit forlorn. Somewhere, surfi ng requires an ocean and heading to the mountains means packing a suitcase.
But not here. Not in Phoenix.
Here, swimsuit season never ends. Here, al fresco dining is always on the menu. Here, any resort guest with a pair of board shorts can hang ten, and a trip to the mountains is as simple as walking from the lobby to the trailhead.
THIS IS PHOENIX.
Visit. Share. This is #myphx.
This is Phoenix. Why take your next vacation merely somewhere when you could make it memorable here?

America Needs a National Airline Policy
Gary KellyChairman, President, and CEO
Southwest Airlines
The U.S. airline industry plays a vital role in the overall health of our nations economy; its hard to identify a single sector that does not benefiteither directly or indirectlyfrom strong and healthy airlines. In fact, our industry creates more than $1 trillion a year in economic activity; drives nearly 10 million American jobs; and accounts for 5 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product.
Southwest Airlines and our wholly owned subsidiary, AirTran Airways, are proud members of Airlines for America (A4A), a trade
organization that advocates for the airline industry as a model for Safety, Customer Service, and envi-ronmental responsibility. A4A recently launched a campaign to highlight the integral role our indus-try plays in our nations economy and the need for a National Airline Policy. This past December, I was honored to be named chairman of A4As board of directors, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with my industry peers to serve our Customers, our Employees, and our communities.
So why is this important to you? A National Airline Policy would strive to keep airline tickets afford-able and enhance the overall travel experience. How? As a start, by mod-ernizing the air traffic control sys-temwhich would serve to reduce flight times and cut congestion, can-cellations, and flight delays. That would help grow our local economies through expanded travel, trade, tour-ism, and the creation of new jobs.
You might be surprised to learn that taxes and fees amount to about 20 percent of a typical $300 round-trip domestic ticket. Thats higher than taxes on products like alcohol, tobacco, and firearmsso-called sin taxes that are designed to discour-age use. Were working hard to keep flying affordable, and punitive taxes get in the way of that effort. Revising the federal tax structure on air travel is just one of the many ways that a National Airline Policy would allow airlines like Southwest and AirTran to better serve our Customers.
This year, A4A hopes to introduce legislation to Congress that will support a National Airline Policy. Of course, the voices that speak the loudest to Congress are those of its constituents. You can play a critical role in helping ensure the success of the campaign by visiting national airlinepolicy.com to lend your sup-port and help Companies like South-west and AirTran better serve you, our valued Customers. Thank you for your support!
Customer Service in Action I recently received a commendation from a couple who was preparing to travel with their autistic child. Nervous about the trip, they contacted one of our Managers at Chicago Midway to see if they could get a dry run of the security checkpoint so they would know what to expect. Our Em-ployee not only agreed, but took it a step furthershe offered the family a rehearsal of the entire travel experience, from checkin to boarding. As you can imagine, the couple was very grateful, and it helped make for a very smooth experience on the day of their flight.

MANAGER OF ADVERTIS ING AND BR AND
E XPERIENCE , DALL A S
Vanessa PeaceEvery day, Southwest Airlines strives to maintain a strong brand presence and deliver a great Customer Experience. According to Vanessa Peace, Manager of Advertising and Brand Experience for Southwest Airlines, preserving the Southwest brand image helps deliver our world-class Customer Experience.
Vanessa and her Team work with internal and exter-nal partners to help produce creative assets, ensuring that the Company delivers a consistent, recognizable look. They collaborate on national ad campaigns, South-west merchandise, trademarks, in-airport and in-air-cra branding and signageeven the napkin your bev-erage was served with today.
I truly feel like Ive become the eyes for the brand, says Vanessa. Consistency in the way Southwest is represented visually is one more way we keep the brand strong and recognizable to Customers.
When Vanessa isnt busy protecting the Companys brand, shes spending time with her family. She and her husband, Mike, have two children: a daughter, Gabriella, and a son, Preston. Vanessa is thankful that Southwest Airlines gives her family the Freedom to travel together.
Southwest also provided Vanessa with a support sys-tem that was stronger than she could have ever imagined needing when her daughter was diagnosed with the neu-rodevelopmental disorder Re syndrome. Gabriella has taught me more than I have ever learned from another human beingabout her, about me, about love, and about what is important, says Vanessa. The skills Vanessa has learned at Southwest have helped her create awareness for Re syndrome as the regional representative for the International Re Syndrome Foundation.
At Southwest Airlines, we strive to make sure thatour Customers can recognize us, whether through mem-orable TV commercials, our beautiful new EVOLVE aircra interiors, or the amazing Customer Service they receive on the ground and in the sky. With Vanessa as part of the Family, we rest assured knowing Customerswill always recognize our brand. Michelle Agnew

She began working as a receptionist at a law firm and started to find a niche that combined technology with her passion for the legal profession. With my natural technology abilities and growing legal experience, I realized I spoke both of these languages. Most others who spoke only law or only technology were always bumping heads, says Tami.
In 1999, Tami founded Law2000, Inc., which provided IT solutions for the legal industry and computerized litigation services. Computer forensics were new at the time, but demand quickly grewafter six months, Tami was called to testify and provide computer forensic evi-dence in a court case. Tami is now well-respected across North America for her expertise.
My busy schedule and continuous business travel fosters my love for Southwest, says Tami. I fly almost weekly to examine evidence or attend court dates, and Southwests flexibility to allow changes to my itinerary makes it my preferred carrier. Thanks to all that travel, Tami is an A-List Member and a Companion Pass holder in Southwests Rapid Rewards Frequent Flyer program.
The Southwest People are the biggest difference com-pared to other carriers, says Tami. Theres always a Southwest Employee making a joke, providing friendly service, and making travel FUN! When Tamis not trav-eling for business, she enjoys flying with her family to her favorite vacation spot: San Francisco.
Tami, we LUV providing you with the Freedom to Fly. Here at Southwest, we sincerely appreciate your loyalty, and we look forward to serving you and your family for years to come. Nicole Rosenblum

Birmingham jail. A childrens crusade. A devastating explosion. A world that would never be the same. The year was 1963, and as the
whole world watched, events in Birmingham sparked the beginning of the end of a centuries-long struggle for freedom. In the year
leading up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the citys most courageous citizens fought for a world where we could all live as equals. And
now, we celebrate their courage, their strength, their defiance and their hard-won victory over oppression. Join us as we
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Birmingham Civil Rights Campaign and experience some of the most prominent landmarks
and monuments of the era, such as the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church.

From the Editor
My friend Doug Humes knows there isnt a boring square inch in America. Even though hes not a professional historian or storyteller, Doug can dig up the secrets of a place faster than anybody I know. I grew up with him in the Philadelphia suburbs, a place I believed to be the epicenter of boredomuntil Doug started telling me stories about spies and smugglers and American Indians and many other true tales of the place.
Over the past several years, Doug and his wife, Barbara, have taken this skill on the road in their perennial explorations of America. You can see just a few of the stories hes uncov-ered along the way on page 66. I wish we had room for more, such as the one about the stone upon which Joan of Arc prayed, now housed in Milwaukee, on the campus of Marquette University. Or Theresas Stockbridge Caf in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, better known as Alices Restaurant. That Alices Restaurant.
When Doug and Barb visited my town of Orange, New Hampshire (population 331), I pointed to the summit of Cardigan Moun-tain, still bald from a fire that farmers set to burn wolves away in 1850. Deep in the woods, I showed them 200-year-old apple trees grown for hard cider that got shipped by train to Boston. We hiked to places where the local Abenaki Indians thrived. We passed one of the mines where workers once dug up clear sheets of mica for use as boiler windows. The couple stayed in my house, built in 1810 by a celibate Shaker community. I could tell a whole story of America just in this one little town.
But Ill leave that to Doug. Hes the kind of guy stories just sort of cling to. Which makes him the finest explorer I know.

I enjoyed reading Spirits Guide to Spirits in the December issue. That is, until I noticed that cra distilleries in the Mid-
west didnt receive a callout. Much appreciation for the mention of Koval Distillery, but I invite you to visitothers in the Chicago area, like North Shore Distillery, located just north of the city. The owners are a married
couple who a ectionately named their still Ethel. There is also FEW Spirits, named a er prohibitionist Frances Elizabeth Willard. I could go on and on, but you get the idea. In addition to the distillers, there are the local bartenders who proudly concoct potions using only the nest local spirits. Alex at Bistro Campagne is my favorite. Thanks for listening, and please stop by for a drink! Wed love to have you!

3 years ago, Sam Batt was rarely home, constantly traveling for his consulting job. I craved the ability to continue making the living I was accustomed to, while enjoying the freedom of being home with my family.I heard that TCBY was looking for franchisees to meet their market demand, and it was like a dream come true for me, says Sam.
I grew up on this stuff. We all did.As the industry pioneer and over 30 years of experience, TCBY is the largest and fastest-growing frozen yogurt brand known by millions, and continues to lead the $1.7 billion frozen yogurt industry. Sam piloted the companys first self-serve store, part of TCBYs spearhead to open 100 self-serve stores nationwide.
Franchisees like Sam Batt continue to reap the rewards of TCBYs superior product, strong brand recognition, reputation, loyalty, and faithful customer base, year after year. In fact, TCBY leads the market in nutrition, taste, and new product innovation.
meet
When we opened our doors two years ago, there were people lined up, and they havent stopped, Sam says. Multiple TCBY stores later, the only thing thats changed since I was a kid, is that Im on the other side of the line.
TCBY is known for being the segment leader in supportingfranchisees and their investment, who provides the infrastructure, team, and resources you need to open and operate your business with training, store development, marketing and operations, and field support.
A love for the product and strong brand recognition is what made this a no-brainer for me. And its incredible how TCBY corporate is still always forward thinking, keeping up with the trends, just as they have right from the beginning, Sam said. I know that a lot of businesses have tried to copy TCBY, but no ones come close.
Within as little as six months you could have what Sam has, operating a TCBY store in your hometown. Territories are still available across the country. Contact TCBY today and realize your dreams of business ownership.
I love what TCBY has afforded me. I take my kids to school everyday. I sleep in my own bed every night with my wife. And I make the kind of living we all deserve.

Beet SkewersIn Colorado we have four very distinct seasons. I source as much as I can from the state, so the menu changes all the timenot only to reflect that, but also to reflect whats available from the small ranchers and growers I rely on. We can get beets and goat cheese almost year-round. I coat the cheese in fines herbesa traditional French blend of chervil, chives, parsley, and tarragonso theyre covered in green. We serve beets and goat cheese together in plated dishes at the restaurant, so it was a natural progression to turn them into more of an entertaining appetizer. If you feel like the skewers need a little moisture, just drizzle them with your favorite vinaigrette.

Kentucky FlowerI like to experiment. A lot of times, I start by thinking about classic recipes. Egg whites used to be huge. You had the pisco sour, as well as an entire series of cock-tails called flips. I actually had a manhattan in mind when I start-ed this drink. Instead of sweet vermouth, I paired bourbon with St-Germain, which has floral notes and a hint of sweetness. A lot of people associate it with
champagne and gin because of its botanicals, but I wanted to see what else it paired well with. Turns out its a big hit with our customers. You never want too much of one thing in a cocktail, and this one has a good balance of sweetness and acidity.

The startup provides data on every-thing from what income bracket readers fall into to the pace at which they progress through their reads. Did you know that women are 50 percent more likely to finish a book than men? (For the record, thats Ladies 2, Gents 0.) Jeremy Green-field of F+W Medias Digital Book World thinks such information will help publishers get closer to their customers than ever before. Lunchtime will never be the same thanks to de-signer Jil Sander. During her namesake labels fall 2012 menswear show, the German fashion icon trotted out one dapper look after another, but it was the accessories that took center stage. A handful of models appeared to be brown-bagging it. But what looked like a sack lunch was actually one of Sanders latest handbags. The Vasari Bag, as it is called, is rendered from coated paper and fea-tures visible stitched seams. The words Jil Sander are printed in small black type near the bottom. After all, not even a designer bag that calls to mind something youd find in a grade-school cafeteria is complete without a logo. It also comes in black, and both colors sold out upon hitting storesdespite the fact that a PB&J was not included.

Lunchtime will never be the same thanks to de-signer Jil Sander. During her namesake labels fall 2012 menswear show, the German fashion icon trotted out one dapper look after another, but it was the accessories that took center stage. A handful of models appeared to be brown-bagging it. But

troubles? Find out whats being lost in translation with this
simple test from expert Brian Hare.
Instructions1. Tell your dog to sit and stay.2. Stand about three feet away, and put a
treat down on either side of you.
3. Point to the treat on your left.4. Record which treat your dog eats. If your
dog eats the treat you pointed at, give him one point.
5. Repeat 10 times, alternating which side you point to.
Results7-10 poInts You probably dont notice when your dog responds to your pointing gestures in all sorts of situations, says Hare. But this skill is remarkable. Your dogs skills are similar to those of a human infant. At around nine months, babies start to build core communication skills: They begin paying attention to what people are trying to communicate when they point. Similarly, your dog relies on your gestures to solve problems he probably couldnt solve alone.
4-6 poInts Dogs are one of the only ani-mals that rely on human gestures, but even among dogs there is variation. Some dogs are more like infants and rely heavily on physical signals, while others are more like chimpanzees and try to solve problems on their own. Your dog uses a mixed strategy. Because he could see food in both places, he didnt need your help, but occasionally chose to follow your gestures anyway.
1-3 poInts To a human, this test seems simple. However, the skills it requires are quite specialized. Your dog is more like a chimpanzee than a human. When chimps perform a similar test to this one, they tend to use self-reliant strategies rather than relying on human gestures. This does not mean your dog is not communicative. He may just be more responsive to other sig-nals, like your voice.
the takeawayYour dogs score is not so much a gauge of his intelligence but rather a way for you to learn how to better communicate with him. If he relies heavily on hand signals, youll know that this is a great way to interact with him. If he uses a more self-reliant strategy, it might explain why he doesnt pay attention to you when you point. Either way, he can still score high in his aptitude for cuddling.

Evoke CuriosityYour goal should be to make people want to know more. Talk about your hobbies, but dont give everything away. For example, My ideal day is a warm sunny afternoon spent outdoors is better than My ideal day is spent hiking up Mount Rainier. You want to tantalize, not intimidate.
Maintain NeutralityYou never know how someone is going to interpret a piece of data. Unless you are completely set on only meeting people who share your views, avoid starting off with the kinds of topics that typically elicit strong opinions. Likewise, dont lead with your job or accom-plishments as this may be seen as arrogant or threatening.
Keep It ShortIn my research, I found that women tend to write essays about themselves. The problem is that the longer you write, the more likely you are to come off as a crazy cat ladytype person. Aim for about 100 words; an 800-word story is overwhelming. In the digi-tal space, most people dont read past the first two paragraphs.
Curb Your SarcasmIts really difficult to be funny when its not organicand the most inorganic thing you can do is sit down at a computer screen by yourself and try to think up funny things to say. A lot of people try to be snarky and clever in their profiles, but it never translates correctly in digital format.

Choose Photos WiselyPost photos of yourself from the waist up, says Webb. Make eye contact and dont stage a smile. Also know that if youre lying about aspects of your physical appearance, like your height, a photo is going to belie that. If youre trying to find your perfect match, you cant have that first date be all about correcting a bunch of lies.

Set a Horizon PointA horizon point is an outlook that
embodies the qualities you want to personify, says Melnick. Make it
part of your daily routine by think-ing about it as soon as you wake
up and returning to it throughout the day. When you are functioning as your ideal self, you will perform
better in stressful situations.
COMMUTE
Use the 50% RuleEvery situation can be divided into two parts: the half you can control and the half you cant. Say you get a flat tire. Take control of your halfyour thoughts, reac-tions, and communicationand dont worry about everything else. Youll be able to respond to the problem better if you do.
MEETING
Think in ThreesTo reset after a contentious
encounter, try three-partbreathing: inhale, hold, and
exhale, all for equal counts. Then consider what happened from
three alternative perspectives. When were under stress, we
tend to take things personally. Remember to take a step back.
PRESENTATION
Change Your TuneBe a better DJ of your own mental iPod. Instead of worrying about what others are thinking of you, move your attention elsewhere. Its like skipping a song: Rather than focusing on the negative, think about someone who loves and respects you. This can boost your confidence instantly.

What did you learn from the GM turnaround? In 2009, when its board of directors asked me
to become CEO, I rst said no. I had retired from AT&T, and I didnt know much about cars or
manufacturing. But there was this aspect of public service; if the board thought I could help the nation and one of its biggest manufacturers,
I thought I should give it a shot. I was a sh out of water when it came to the vehicles, but not with
the people. The workforces morale was pre y low, but things started to move in the right direction
when they got a glimmer of hope. Once their spirit got going, the turnaround kind of fed on itself.

why does dating often times seem so difficult and daunting? With all the
dating websites and social networks out there, youd think it would be easier than ever for singles to meet someone special. But thats not the case. Meeting the right people seems harder than ever. To get the latest on real-time dating trends, we caught up with Melissa Brown, one of the many dating experts at Its Just Lunch.
Q: so what does todays dating scene look like?
A: Dating today is an interesting paradox: were more connected than ever through social media and online networking, yet were also more disconnected than ever. Todays technology makes communication faster, but Im not sure its better. You cant make a genuine connection with someone by texting, emailing or friending. When you meet someone in person and share a meal together, you see how that person interacts with you and the people around you. You observe their body language and how they carry themselves. Thats where the true chemistry happens: face-to-face, one on one. At Its Just Lunch, our focus is to get people out from behind their computers and out making connections with real people.
