2009 highlands christmas party and auction celebrates ministry of volunteers

This morning, in my daily devotions I read, “Faith and

obedience live in remembrance and repetition. Remembrance becomes the power of the present because of the living God who once acted for me and who reminds me of that today.” (I Want to Live These Days with You by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, pg.15)

As we look forward to 2010 and celebrating sixty-five years of ministry at Highlands, it is valuable to take a peek back, and remember how our years have been filled with blessing upon blessing as the living God has acted for us.

The Highlands Vision tells us about the expenses for the first season of ministry:

“Installation of a five-kilowatt 115-volt electric lighting plant to update the electrical system cost $665.73. Purchase of fifty bunk beds, one hundred mattresses, one hundred pillows, one hundred chairs and four tables provided accommodations for the campers at a cost of $805. The insurance bill totaled $61.02. Charles Jensen, who served as the maintenance person for the summer, received a salary of $25.00. Leaders spent $111.06

on camp supplies to begin the season at a bare minimum. The kitchen acquired dishes, pots, pans, an icebox, and an electric stove for $164. The Stangers were reimbursed for the down payment, and Mrs. P. B. Bailey received $400 in interest on the loan. The grand total of expenses equaled $4,069.94. Contributions by churches and individuals in 1946 totaled $5,642.66.” (pg. 37)

In the summer of 2009, we participated in a unique program with Energy Solutions Unlimited. Through this program light fixtures throughout

A good time was had

by all who were able to gather at Highlands on December 5, 2009, for the annual Christmas party. Included in the 2009 Highlands Christmas party was delicious food prepared by the Highlands Food Service Staff, a short preview of the 2010 summer camp schedule, an auction to benefit

our debt reduction, and most importantly, the recognition of volunteers who help ensure a vibrant ministry at Highlands.

Recognizing that it takes all different kinds of volunteers to make the ministry happen, Highlands decided to recognize four separate individuals who represent various ways of sharing gifts and talents with Highlands. These four individuals are Mark Kenning, Geoff Noble, Rev. Sue Spencer, and Rev. Janet Schlenker.

Mark Kenning is a Commissioned Lay Pastor at the Weldon Valley Presbyterian Church in Goodrich, Colorado, and a long-time volunteer at Highlands. Mark was recognized for his service on the Facilities/Operations Sub-Committee. Mark also has a huge commitment to helping Highlands with special projects like painting roof vents, building and donating signs and rocking chairs, and helping to find creative ways to help Highlands save money. Mark’s service as chair of the Facilities Sub-Committee transitioned the role and name of the committee to the Operations Sub-Committee — thus embracing a much broader focus for the work of that sub-committee. Highlands were retrofitted, allowing us to take advantage of a one-time Boulder County grant and rebates from our power authority for reducing wattage. Overall, we had three cabins rewired to bring them up to code, and fixtures throughout the cabins and retreat center replaced. We expect to see an energy savings of $2335 per year. Total cost of the work done was $22,126. Our cost on this project after rebates and grants is $3647.

Despite the economic difficulties of 2009, donors have remained remarkably faithful to Highlands, providing blessing upon blessing. In 2009, our total donations were $918,051.70. This represents $523,164.62 in restricted donations, primarily for debt reduction, which help to insure the long term future of Highlands. We also received $209,240.06 in unrestricted support. Unrestricted gifts, along with support from our presbyteries, are essential to the ongoing operations of Highlands.

More remarkably, in these tough economic times, Highlands has seen a growth in generated income and the number of campers and guests using our facilities. Our generated revenue shows 29% growth in the last five years. In 2009, we had 16,598 guest days, also demonstrating significant growth over the previous five years. Blessing upon blessing has been ours!

In 2010 it is anticipated that our insurance costs will be $51,000, and interest payments will be $106,000. The 2010 Highlands Budget includes $1,470,482.45 in Operating Expenses plus an anticipated $750,000 in Debt reduction totaling $2,220,482.45.

Generous donors in the first year of our “Move the Mountain . . . Expand the Impact” Capital Campaign have enabled us to make significant debt reduction payments. In addition to our mortgage, we have a current Draw Note balance of $365,900 which is at the same interest rate and terms as our mortgage. Combined, our long-term debt is $1,810,635. In 2009, when our total debt fell below $2 million dollars, our bank was able to release a certificate of deposit that was being held to guarantee this loan. This certificate of deposit was provided by Denver Presbytery as a part of their partnership in ministry. Releasing these funds not only indicated the growing strength of Highlands’ financial position but provided funds for ministry in Denver Presbytery. In 2010, we look forward to reaching the first goal of our capital campaign when donors provide $1,000,000 in gifts and pledges. To date, donors have provided $781,966.09 in gifts and pledges to eliminate our debt!

As we look to 2010, our blessings are not all about numbers and finances. A year ago, Michelle Ruiz wrote in this newsletter about her “Highlands Inspired Decision.” Michelle has been a camper at Highlands and since 2007 has served on summer staff. Michelle will be graduating from CSU this spring, and is looking forward to going to seminary in the fall. This week I got to visit Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary with Michelle, as she considers where she will go in the fall. It is a joy to talk with her and pray for her as she discerns Gods call in her life. The blessings upon blessings for Highlands includes the stories of many who walk deeper in their faith, and experience God’s claim on their lives in new ways because of their time here! Uncountable blessings upon blessings for 65 years! Thanks be to the living God who still acts for us!

it's God. I really mean that.” This attitude and humility is represented in the spirit of all four of our recognized volunteers.

Geoff Noble is a newly retired individual from Centennial, Colorado, who spent two weeks at Highlands this summer helping out in maintenance and facilities. When asked why he offered

up two weeks of his time this summer, he said, “Because my wife makes me . . . NO!” But Geoff is married to the 2008 Distinguished Volunteer, Annely Noble, and he says that she is a role model and mentor for him. Geoff said, “Her passion for Highlands is infectious. Her enthusiasm and passion spilled over and I ‘caught the bug’.” Geoff said that he chooses a more “hands on approach” to his volunteering, and that it is very gratifying to see the before and after of his work in and around the

Retreat Center, painting around camp, etc.

Rev. Sue Spencer is the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Akron, Colorado. Sue has consistently

offered her gifts and services as a volunteer Bible Study/Worship Leader for the summer camp program. She has served at Highlands for a week or two each year since 2006. Sue has also served as a Design Team member for more than a few youth retreats, and serves as a gracious

encourager of the ministry at Highlands to all whom she encounters. Sue told Highlands that one of the reasons she volunteers is that “Church camp can be such an important experience for kids. I like working with kids. My mom had a really important experience at camp and that’s been passed on to me.”

Rev. Janet Schlenker is a retired pastor living in Aurora, Colorado. Janet has served as the chair of the Highlands Personnel Sub-Committee for the past three years, and has graciously and professionally helped serve the personnel needs of Highlands. During her time as Stated Clerk of Denver Presbytery, Janet served an integral role, in the early 2000s, in developing the relationship between Highlands, the Presbytery of Denver and the Presbytery of Plains and Peaks. Her work, along with others, eventually led to the establishment of the Joint Highlands Committee and the mutual partnership which is currently enjoyed by all parties today.

We thank Mark, Geoff, Sue and Janet for their valued support of Highlands. We also would like to thank Dr. Chrissy Starcher for volunteering time and energy coordinating the “Palettes and Pieces” auction. This event attracted various items from numerous donors in an effort to help reduce the Highlands debt. Due to the hard work and generosity of many individuals, over $7,000 was raised to help pay down the mortgage on the retreat center.

As proven by the various gifts and talents shared by these distinctive volunteers, it takes a diverse community of individuals to make the ministry of Highlands happen on an every day basis. We hope and pray that you too may become inspired to share your gifts and talents with us. Whether it’s doing manual labor around the campus, serving on a committee, interacting with summer camp participants, or offering another unique talent, we believe that everyone has something to share to enhance the work we do for God at Highlands.

2010 summer camp curriculum… “be a hero”

The summer camp theme for 2010 at Highlands is “Be a Hero.” At Highlands, being a hero for God means knowing that, through the power of Christ, when we recognize a need we are able to take a risk and step out in

faith to act with love and justice. Being a hero for God involves understanding that God calls and equips us to do some of what Jesus and other biblical heroes did. And for us, like the Biblical heroes, this work is often done in simple ways, with every day things, and by ordinary people. We invite you to join us this summer to discover and discern what it means to be a hero in and for Jesus Christ.

the milestone ride and benefit for highlands

On July 17, 2010, Cleon Kimberling, a long-time Highlands supporter and committee member, will celebrate his 80th birthday. On that day, Cleon invites you to join him in celebration with the Milestone

Ride – a bicycle event 20 miles in length and 3,029 feet in elevation gain from Hall Ranch in Lyons, Colorado, to the doors of the Highlands Retreat Center. If you are not a bicyclist, you can still join in the festivities and show your support of Highlands by participating in a jig-saw puzzle tournament, or a hike around the property! More information is available on-line at www.highlandscamp.org.

new for summer 2010:

day camp off the mountain! In the summer of 2009, Highlands continued a pilot

project of taking our camping program off the mountain and into local congregations. During the week of June 21 – 25, five staff members traveled to Iglesia Presbyteriana de Valverde, a bilingual congregation in Denver, to share our skills during a bilingual day camp. The next week, June 28 – July 2, four staff members traveled to Dalton, NE to share a day camp ministry with children and youth in the panhandle of Nebraska, in partnership with the Parish of the Plains through the Dalton Presbyterian Church. Through these two partners, over 120 more children and youth heard good news about God’s Kingdom and how we can participate in this incarnational movement.

We have really enjoyed our partnership with these two congregations and sharing in how God has blessed these ministries. Currently, we are stepping out in faith and

expanding our program in partnership with other congregations to offer day camp somewhere in the Front Range region all summer long! After an application process in the fall, Highlands has chosen seven different congregations to partner with this summer. Our partnership list includes:

First Presbyterian Church, Aurora, COWeldon Valley Presbyterian Church, Goodrich, CO

Iglesia Presbyteriana de Valverde, Denver, COStrasburg Presbyterian Church, Strasburg, CO

Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Northglenn, CODalton Presbyterian Church and the Parish of the Plains, Dalton, NE

First Presbyterian Church, Sydney, NEHighlands is really excited about these opportunities for partnership, creative programming, and most importantly

– sharing the good news of Jesus Christ to even more children and youth. We invite you to join us in prayer and excitement about this new program opportunity! Highlands will be hiring additional staff and using additional resources to make this program happen, but we trust that God will provide all that is necessary (and more!) for the gospel to be proclaimed. Pray that God will bless our partnership with these congregations, that planning, coordination, and implementation of the program will be smooth and effective. We’ll give an update in the fall with highlights of this special ministry!

highlands celebrates sixty-five yearsof ministry in 2010

Did you know that in August of 1945, Boulder Presbytery authorized its Christian Education Committee to appoint a committee in order to secure a location and raise funds for a tract of land for a new camp and

conference ministry? This act of the presbytery is considered the birth of the current Highlands ministry located in the beautiful mountains of Allenspark, Colorado. What began as a small and primitive summer-only operation has transformed and grown into a first-class facility, operating year round and serving over 17,000 guests annually.

To celebrate sixty-five years of strong and vibrant ministry, Highlands will be offering special events and programs throughout 2010 in honor of the ministry of Highlands and the hard work and vision of those initial pioneers in camp and retreat ministry. Come up and celebrate sixty-five years of grace in a beautiful place with us! Highlands wants to ensure that we get our 65th anniversary information and specials to all of the Highlands family. Do you know a former camper, counselor, volunteer, etc. who does not receive our newsletter? If so, please call (303-747-2888) or email Holly ([email protected]) at Highlands to share names and contact information for these friends of Highlands.
