Art and Individual* Many years ago, an instructor of mine at the time would go out of his way not only to make sure students had a grasp and understanding of what was being taught, but also made it a point to make us better people. His belief was that a better individual made for a better society. He would don classes with encouraging words that could be used in everyday life – words that really went to the heart of the matter. Though we were all gathered together to learn a martial art, this did not always seem the focus. Rather it was a chance for a group of people to come, learn, grow and experience. And part of our experience was growing form the experience of the instructor. His aim was to make you feel part of a family, part of his family. Every student was treated as an extended son or daughter. I recall many times sharing a meal with him, at his home, following training. The welcoming was overwhelming – differing from the far too often cold shoulder we receive today amongst the martial arts community. His treatment of people was direct and firm but always fair and compassionate. The goal was to connect – not to keep a student but to make a friend and create a lasting bond.
He was a man full of faith, full of love and full of life. He trained during a time when martial arts were not all the rage in the United States, were
not a social activity or as a means of childcare or an alternative to the gym. His training was hard
but it did not harden the man.
He has since passed and I think of him quite often. I carry on his message to connect with
others within my own teachings and in my own life activities.
He expressed his true love of the art and the
individual by what was written on his certificates. I honor him by doing the same with
my own and by sharing it with you.
Stand Tall Mentally You are what you think you are.
Therefore, protect your mind from thoughts of evil and despair.
Stand Tall Physically
You body was created by God. Therefore, protect your body from abuse and
overindulgence.
Stand Tall Spiritually Since you are a child of God, act accordingly.

Seminar in Graz, Austria
My trip to India took me within 1 hour of Graz, so I returned there on my way home to see my friend, Master Pliz. As always, Master Pilz and his wonderful students made me feel right at home. They showed me a few sites, took me to share in outstanding food, and then trained for 4 hours straight on Saturday evening. They are great people on and off of the mat. I look forward to having a WHA Summer Camp in Austria in the near future. Master Dan Piller
