St. Michael the Archangel, defend
us in battle,
Be our protection against the
wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him,
we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the
Heavenly Hosts,
by the Power of God,
cast into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl throughout the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

This week I return to my brief commentary on the Roman Can-
on. The Te igitur helped us to focus our attention on God and
orient us rightly regarding the purpose of this prayer: the offering
of sacrifice with the hope of obtaining salvation through and for
the Church. The Memento recalls those who are in need of this
great grace. The next prayer, the Communicantes further broadens
our vision allowing us to recall that this prayer is made in union
with the saints.
This part of the Canon is a vivid reminder of the broad scope
of our family of faith. The Mass exists not only to create fellow-
ship among those present, not even just among the living, but
the Mass joins us to the saints in heaven who are really our
brothers and sisters. We call upon the saints to remember our
fellowship with them, but also to invoke their merits. Since we
are members of the body of Christ, this means that not only can
Christ’s merits be effective for us, but all those in union with
Christ can contribute to and partake in the treasury of merit
which gains for the Body of Christ an eternal reward beside the
Father’s throne.
Liturgically speaking, this prayer of the Canon is one of two
whose texts are amended for various liturgical celebrations. Pay
close attention and you will notice that there is an alternate text
on Christmas and its octave, Epiphany, the period from the East-
er Vigil to the following Saturday, the Ascension of the Lord, and
from the Vigil of Pentecost to the following Saturday. In 1961,
Pope St. John XXIII added the name of St. Joseph to this prayer.
As you examine the names of those mentioned in this prayer,
you will notice that beside Mary and Joseph there are the 12
apostles and 12 other saints. Naming two sets of twelve is a bibli-
cal allusion to the 24 elders mentioned in Revelation 4:4. So who
are these final 12 saints? After Jude, five popes are mentioned,
Linus, Cletus, Clement, Sixtus, Cornelius. After them, a bishop, Cyp-
rian. Then a deacon, Lawrence. The final five are lay men. With the
exception of the Mary, Joseph and the Apostle John, all are mar-
tyrs. They truly give a wide representation of the early church as
well. Their martyrdoms occurred not only in Rome, but in Asia,
Africa, and Europe abroad. ~ Fr. O’Brien

Parishioners are banding together to pray a rosary for the past and
present priests of our parish.
Our goal is to have one parishioner who commits each day to
pray for our priests as well as another parishioner who will
pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory.
Please see the sign-up sheets in the narthex to join in!
