Fisker Karma is the latest addition to the growing list of new vehicles available in B.C. that qualify under the Clean Energy Vehicle (CEV) Point of Sale Incentive Program.
The Karma, a battery electric vehicle with extended range, qualifies for a discount of up to $5,000 off the pre-tax sticker price when purchased or leased at a new car dealer in B.C. Its addition brings to 16 the number of vehicles now qualifying under the program, which kicked off Dec. 1.
“The addition of the Fisker name to our list of qualifying vehicles is great news for consumers here in B.C.,” says Blair Qualey, President and CEO of the New Car Dealers Association of BC. “The CEV for BC program is here to make a significant contribution to the greening of the provincial economy and we’re excited to be able to make new clean energy technology more accessible to those looking to purchase or lease a new vehicle.”
Fisker Automotive is an American auto manufacturer, founded in 2007, that produces luxury Electric Vehicles with extended range (EVer). EVer is Fisker’s proprietary plug-in hybrid electric powertrain, which consists of an efficient gasoline engine, an electric generator, a Lithium-ion battery pack, and two electric motors at the rear wheels.
For the Karma sedan, charging a fully depleted battery requires approximately six hours using a 220V/40A outlet (standard in Europe and widely available in homes in Canada and the U.S for electrical appliances) or approximately 14 hours using a standard Canadian household 110V outlet.
An initiative of the BC Ministry of Environment, LiveSmart BC in partnership with the New Car Dealers Association of B.C., the CEV Incentive Program is accessible through 199 participating new car dealers across the province and aims to encourage and accelerate the sale of clean energy vehicles and technology innovation within B.C.
For more information, including a complete list of eligible vehicles and incentives for each, visit www.CEVforBC.ca

Saunders Family Foundation, which raises funds to benefit the local community, especially youth sports, arts and theatre programs throughout Greater Victoria and Cowichan Valley.
“My parents have always been about giving back to the community,”
both in service and, as the business grew, with financial contributions, Dave says. “I remember building a lacrosse box with my dad at four or five years old.”
Today, “the Saunders Family Foundation is a big part of that. We’re facilitating donations from community benefactors for kids sports, arts and culture. It’s really exciting to be able to do that and have
an opportunity to give back in your community.”
Coming up is the annual Saunders Family Foundation Golf Tournament May 4 at Cowichan Golf and Country Club. The family raised more than $35,000 last year and while the tournament is full for golfers this year, organizers welcome prize donations – call tournament organizer Jim Tenhove 250-474-5162 for details.

Subaru Canada has received four Canadian Residual Value Awards from automotive insights company ALG.

Subaru Canada has announced it has received four Canadian Residual Value Awards from automotive insights company ALG, the industry benchmark for residual values.
In addition to receiving best-in-class honours for the 2012 Impreza, Outback and WRX/STI, Subaru has been named Best Mainstream Brand for the third year in a row.
The annual ALG Residual Value Awards recognize automakers’ outstanding achievements in producing vehicles that demonstrate the ability to retain the highest percentage of their original price after a four-year period for mainstream brands and a three-year period for luxury brands. Awards are given in 19 vehicle categories and also in two brand categories (mainstream and luxury). This year’s awards are based on 2012 model year vehicles.
In addition to overall honours as the Best Mainstream Brand, three Subaru vehicles won their individual categories:
Compact Car Award: the Subaru Impreza. According to ALG, the new Impreza offers compelling value for the Canadian market, offering All-Wheel Drive in a segment where price is usually a large consideration.
Midsize Utility Vehicle Award: the Subaru Outback. For the second consecutive year, Outback claims the midsize utility vehicle award.
Sporty Car Award: the Subaru WRX/WRX STI. This is the fourth year the WRX and STI have claimed top honours in the Sporty category.
Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance, industry trends and economic conditions. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that impact ALG’s residual value forecasts.

KAtE WELLSI drive my son to and from Happy
Valley Elementary and every day I witness drivers speeding through the clearly marked school zone, some even texting or talking on their cell phone.
I am often tailgated when I travel at the proper speed limit – 30 km/h between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days. These drivers often seem so impatient with me too, as I drive according to the law!
Perhaps these drivers are unaware of the rules of the road surrounding school zones or maybe they don’t know that child pedestrian crashes are the leading cause of injury-related death for Canadian children under the age of 14.
Chances are they know both, but continue to drive aggressively and without regard for our most vulnerable pedestrians.
Research states that a child hit by a car travelling at least 50 km/h has an 80 per cent chance of being killed. However if a child is hit by a car travelling at 30 km/h, they have up to a 95 per cent chance of survival. That’s a drastic difference!
Today I heard Victoria Police pulled
over a driver travelling through a school zone at 80 km/h! The driver had her vehicle impounded and was issued a $368 speeding ticket. Maybe this driver should also be forced to re-take the learner’s test so at the very least she can re-learn her road signs!
Schools are busy locations. Children often dart from between parked cars and are not aware of the dangers vehicles pose.
Crossing guards do a great job of keeping our children safe – thank you! – and a big thanks as well to the community police who sit outside designated areas, often school zones, monitoring people’s speed.
A school zone sign that has a posted speed limit beneath it means you MUST travel at that speed from the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days. If there’s a sign that does not have at posted speed limit, you must reduce your speed when children are present – between the same hours and again, on school days only.
Take a moment, visit icbc.com and see which road signs you know and which you don’t. Refresh your skills to be a better driver. And slow down in school zones!
Do you speed through school zones?
The weather held off for Sunday’s Winter Hornets Enduro Race, as competitors took on the challenge of 200 laps or two hours – whichever comes first.
Darren Yates took the checkered flag,
with Cody Aumen, Howie Mace, Blair Davis and Ian Walker rounding out the top five finishers from the field of 18 cars.
The Hornets next hit the track March 25 for the final race of the winter series.

The Volvo C30 has been honoured with the 2012 Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership Award.
Presented at the recent Chicago Auto
Show, the C30 claimed the top spot in the Entry-Level Luxury Car segment, a testament to its remarkable value.
The all-new 2012 awards honour current model-year vehicles and brands with the lowest projected ownership costs, based on Kelley Blue Book Total
Cost of Ownership data for the initial five-year ownership period.
Total Cost of Ownership information reveals depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs for new models.
Kelley Blue Book calculates total ownership costs for new vehicles by applying sophisticated valuation methodology along with critical financial data from third-party providers.

The Hyundai Veloster won the “Best New Design” award for 2012, presented by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.
“It’s a great honour to have the Hyundai Veloster win the Best New Design award from AJAC,” said Steve Kelleher, President and CEO, Hyundai Auto Canada Corp.
“Fluidic Sculpture was Hyundai’s first foray into developing its own, distinctive design language and the Veloster was sculpted from the outset to be the most aggressive iteration of that approach. The Veloster is a design halo for the entire Hyundai brand, so
to win an award based on the car’s styling is proof that our designers have found success.”
The top three finalists for the 2012 Best New Design award were the Hyundai Veloster, the Jaguar XKR-S and the Ranger Rover Evoque.
Accordingly, the AJAC journalists selected the winner based on a combination of aesthetics, function and brand essence.
The aesthetics component reflects the sheer beauty of the design. The function component assesses the manner and degree to which it accommodates the practical requirements of the vehicle type.
And brand essence considers its success in conveying the image, heritage and values of the specific brand.

For 2012, Ram Truck will expand its model lineup by adding the new, top-of-the-line Ram Laramie Limited.
Featuring premium materials, such as full-leather seating, piano-black interior components and under-stated exterior badging, Ram Laramie Limited offers a refined luxury alternative to the popular southwestern-themed Ram Laramie Longhorn edition pickup.
Ram Laramie Limited gets a body-coloured front fascia with fog lamps and a matching, painted rear bumper. (Ram Laramie Limited 2500 and 3500 models in white and silver exterior colours get chrome front and rear bumpers.)
The Laramie Limited’s chrome grille surrounds billet inserts that
are featured on Ram Sport models. Understated chrome accents include
body-side moulding, mirrors, door handles and tubular side steps.
A full-leather cockpit with dark slate Natura Plus leather seats and engraved details lend the Ram Laramie Limited an unmatched level of sophistication and style.
Contrasting medium greystone leather piping provides seat-edge emphasis.
Additional accents are created along either side of the piping by medium greystone deck-seam stitching.
The Ram Laramie Limited’s cavernous double-stacked centre console is topped with a soft, double French-stitched full-leather lid.

Canadian Black Book (CBB) has
released its seventh annual Retained Value Awards, and Toyota and Lexus models have taken the top spot in seven categories, confirming the trusted quality, reliability and exceptionally high retained value of these vehicles.
The Toyota and Lexus winners of
2012 CBB Retained Value Awards were in the following categories:
• Full-size car: Toyota Avalon • Luxury car: Lexus GS series • Premium luxury car: Lexus LS
series • Small pickup: Toyota Tacoma • Full-size pickup: Toyota Tundra • Mid-size SUV: Toyota FJ Cruiser • Full-size SUV: Toyota Sequoia The Toyota Avalon, Lexus LS series,
Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra Toyota FJ Cruiser and Toyota Sequoia each won as well in 2011.
This year, the award examines 2008 models, and winners have been chosen in 17 segments. The awards are determined from actual value retained from MSRP, measured over a four-year period.
CBB initiated the awards to help consumers identify which vehicles
retain the highest percentage of their original value. 8Although strong retained value performance is not a guarantee of future strength, it is a strong indicator for how a vehicle should perform in the future. For the consumer, selecting a vehicle with a lower depreciation rate will reduce their overall cost of ownership.

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada declared the Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel the 2012 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.
“Winning this award is a tremendous honour, said John White, President of Volkswagen Canada. “The Volkswagen Touareg is extremely capable both on and
off road, and surrounds its passengers in comfort and luxury. We are very pleased to be recognized for all of the hard work our engineers and designers have put in.”
It also won the “Best New SUV/CUV ($35,000 to $60,000)” class when the category winners were announced in October 2011.
All “Best New” category winners are eligible to compete for the overall crown of either the “Canadian Car of the Year” or “Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.”

Infiniti Canada has received three ALG Residual Value Awards including its fourth consecutive Best Luxury Brand award.
For the second year in a row, ALG named the Infiniti QX56 Luxury Full-size Utility award recipient, while the EX35 received the award for best Luxury Compact Utility.
“Delivering inspired products that are best-in-class is what Infiniti is all about and recognition by ALG as Best Luxury Brand four years in a row is a testament to this,”
said Allen Childs, President of Nissan Canada Inc. “Our line-up continues to provide exceptional performance, style and excitement, and the added benefit of residual value is certainly something that appeals to drivers.”
ALG Award winners are determined through careful study of the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance, industry trends, and economic conditions.
Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing and marketing strategies remain the key factors that impact ALG’s residual value forecasts.
