Some people get into the habit of eating nutritional supplements to enhance physical strength and sustain work efficiency, but these healthy vitamins can actually be absorbed in a balanced diet!
By Ho Wen-jyun(何文君), Chi Chia-yun (紀佳妘), Tseng Ya-chi(曾雅琦) , Su Chin-t ing(蘇稚婷), Chou Tzu-ping(周子平) REPORTER Li Chia-che(李佳哲), a pharmacist at Minfeng Pharmacy, said that many people often drink coffee or tea to freshen up. Excessive amount of coffee and tea will over stimulate the digest system --- stomach and intestine --- and cause an increase in gastric acid secretion. People with more sensitive bodies need to be especially careful about it. While Chou Chia-ju (周家如), a pharmacist at Yongan Pharmacy, said that vitamins containing antioxidant components (抗氧化成分) can help one to stay healthy, and Vitamin C (
維生素C), vitamin E (維生素E) and beta-carotene (β-胡蘿蔔素) are the best. These vitamins are available in foods and fruits that people can easily get, such as vitamin C from guavas and oranges, vitamin E from almonds and wheat and beta-carotene from carrots. And doctor Hsiao Liang-chi (蕭喨綺) of Shining Chinese Medical Clinic graduated from Beij ing University of Chinese Medicine with a master’s degree. Hsiao said that people feeling out of spirits are deficient in qi(氣) and blood, and that blood flow will go smoothly if the qi circulation is good. “Chinese medicine focuses on spleen and stomach. Take care of them, then the qi and blood will flow smoothly.”
“Eating local foods that are in season and avoiding raw or cold foods are the basic concepts,” said Hsiao. “If your body is weak, eat warm food.” Eating foods opposite to the attribution of one’s body can harmonize the qi and blood. Foods like red meat, spinach and string bean are beneficial to supply and enrich blood. Hsiao said, “As for Chinese herbs, we can drink some Red Dates (紅棗) and Longan Tea (桂圓茶). If you want to nourish your qi, adding some Huang Qi (Chinese Milkvetch, 黃耆) is a good way to strengthen your qi and blood.” Besides taking Chinese herbs, pressing on acupuncturing points is also an effective method, Hsiao said.Pressing the Hegu (合谷穴), Xuehai
(血海穴) and Taichong (太衝穴) can make one feeling vigorous. “Pressing the point about three to five minutes each time can improve your vitality,” said Hsiao. “Zusanli (足三里穴) is the point which is good for strengthening the spleen and stomach.” She suggested pressing the Zusanli point between 7 and 9 a.m. because the stomach gas is vigorous at that time. Hsiao always advises patients not to stay up late. “It is better to sleep before 10 p.m. (no later than 2 a.m.). If you always stay up late, your metabolism will become abnormal.” Doctor Lin, Kun-cheng (林坤成) of oriental medicine indicated that people must adjust one’s living habits with 24 seasons. “For example, when
it comes to Autumn Equinox (秋分), people may easily get sick in their stomachs.” Furthermore, he provided some recipes to refresh one from stress and over-work. “Sore eyes are common.” Lin said, “Stew Matrimony Vine (枸杞) and Chrysanthemum Flower (菊花), 4:1 ratio, with 4 bowls of water. That will be great for sore eyes. Also, do a little massage on temples (太陽穴) is another good way to keep up one’s spirits.” Different from Western medicine, Chinese medicine emphasizes the balance between nature and body. According to the preceding article, m a y b e t h e C h i n e s e m e d i c i n e prescription is the best natural way to enhance vitality.
