The old adage of “there is no ‘I’ in team” certainly came to life for me in preparing for this year’s 20th Annual FCMC Foundation Golf Tournament. I have been involved with plenty of golf tournaments at other places, but this one was special because it was the first event under my watch as the Ex-ecutive Director of the FCMC Founda-tion. What made it special? Everyone’s assistance. Let me drill down and talk about a scenario that occurred on the afternoon of August 21. An FCMC employee of 28 years who I will describe as a “worker bee” sees me at 2:55 p.m. as she awaits a 3 p.m. meeting. We talk about the golf tournament, specifically the food, and the conversation goes to “what are we doing for desserts?” I reply that I’m working on it, and she simply says, “I bet if you ask around, there would be plenty of people here that would bake something.” I agreed it was a good idea. Fast forward to the next day when I received an email from this same “worker bee.” She listed 12 names of FCMC staffers and what they would be making for what turned out to be a very tasty dessert bar: from cornflake cookies to red velvet cake, from apple pie to fudge and everything in between. We had two tables of desserts lined up for the 81 golfers and volunteers for the September 14 event. No one went away hungry – not after breakfast, snacks (including a hot dog station) and lunch, which all had spon-sors connected to them. The sponsor-ship support was overwhelming as department heads reached out to their vendors and they responded favorably. We didn’t have to ask twice for their assistance. The same held true for our volunteers, many of whom have been offering their services from the tourna-ment’s inception. When I recently introduced myself to a local business owner, who also played in the golf tournament, he smiled and acknowledged it was one of his favorite

New FCMC Website Nears CompletionA new FCMC website will soon hit the world wide web with a refreshing look and feel, and with plenty of new features. From the Medical Center side, a news and events calendar has been added, along with an easy to navigate physicians directory and a revamped employment opportu-nities link. From the Foundation, there is easy-to-use planned giving information, descriptions on

other ways to support the Foundation, a new online giving portal and an online special event registration page. These features and more are wrapped around vibrant pho-tos and helpful information as you navigate our new site. The site’s URL will remain the same: www.fcmcpa.org.

events. I asked why. He talked about its organization, the cause (this year’s event benefitted the Emer-gency Room Expansion Project) and the food. And yes, he mentioned the dessert bar. I shared the story about how that came about and he just laughed. “When you ask folks around here for our support, we try to help as much as we can.” There you have it: spoken by and for the people of Fulton County. During this expansion project, we have received gifts of varying amounts from first timers and also from our most loyal supporters. We are grateful for your caring attitude. Now back to this worker bee. I asked her the other week why she took on the responsibility of orga-nizing the “dessert angels.” She grinned and simply said, “I know a lot of people who like to bake and it was their way of contributing to the golf tournament...” Your giving of time, treasure and talent does not get overlooked. It is greatly appreciated and I am very grateful to be part of the team that sees it in action. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it, too. ------- On page 11 you will see that I’ve written an appeal letter to you for a year-end gift. This gift will not only benefit the FCMC Foundation, but you as well. Gifts received by December 31 are eligible for a 2013 charitable income tax deduction, as allowed by law. This simple dead-line is the catalyst for most year-end giving. There is no easier way to garner a charitable deduction for 2013, and support us at the same time than by simply writing a check. Make sure your envelope is postmarked by De-cember 31. Of course, using our new secure online (www.fcmcpa.org) giv-ing portal is quick and easy, too.

Blessings,

Mike

he value of life insurance is usually to provide financial security for your loved ones

in the event of your death. However, life insurance can be used for other purposes as well. Your gift of life insurance – restricted or unrestricted – to the FCMC Foundation could be a larger amount than provided through a bequest. The most common ways to make a gift through life insurance are: • Using an existing policy: You may have a life insurance policy that you no longer need. • Transferring ownership of an existing policy: You can receive a tax benefit by making the FCMC Foun-dation both owner and beneficiary of your life insurance policy. • Purchasing a new policy: You can buy a new life insurance policy to support the FCMC Foundation in the future with an irrevocable gift. There are significant tax benefits when you allow a charity to own your policy, or by making the charity the beneficiary. Life Insurance is a meaningful and versatile planned giving option, but because there are many types of policies and means of gifting their proceeds, it can become complicated. Always review your plans with a professional advisor.

This is one in a series of Planned Giving Options

InKindn an effort to keep all of our donors up-to-date on current is-sues involving planned giving,

the Foundation, in conjunction with the Medical Center, has launched a new website: www.fcmcpa.org The Foundation site is a compre-hensive resource for all of your gift planning questions. Discover all of the tax and income benefits of the various kinds of planned gifts. Read in-depth about trusts and annuities that pay you an income for life; how you can make gifts from life insur-ance policies, retirement plan assets or appreciated property; and how to set up your will so that the govern-ment does not benefit more than your heirs. We also provide a glossary of planned giving terms for a better un-derstanding of any unfamiliar mate-rial. If you are wondering how a gift will work for you, see your possible benefits for many charitable giving options with our Gift Illustrator. To access the planned giving sec-tion of our website, click on www.fcmcpa.org, then go to the Foundation drop down box at the top, or click on the Foundation box at the bottom of the page. InDepth

W hat began as a walking event has turned into a long-running affair for

the Fulton County Medical Center Angels. In 1995, a group of FCMC female staffers got together to walk a few laps in support of one of their own at the first Relay For Life event in McConnellsburg. “I remember they were sec-ond in raising the most money,” said Mary Lou Eisenhower, who coordinated the event that netted $15,000. “They were a determined group of angels.” “We had this little rag doll, maybe two or three inches tall that was our angel mascot,” said Deb Leese, the group’s first cap-tain for the RFL event. RFL became an annual event for the group as they passed around the yarn angel doll as if she were the baton that held them together.“The angel doll was symbolic of how we stuck together,”reflected Leese. Their focus has become more expansive over time. “Working here, you get to know the needs of those within the community,” said Barb Weller, an original member of the FCMC Angels. “We started focusing on more needs than just one.” In 2008, they formally organized themselves through a committee charter with an outlined pur-pose and procedural process. Its

Earning Their Wings

purpose is to serve as advocates for the Fulton County Medical Center within the community, supporting benevolent events for organizations or individuals. These advocates are comprised of FCMC employ-ees (currently 32 members) who provide assistance to members of the community. In 2010, the orga-nization became part of the FCMC Foundation. “We don’t hand out money,” said Misty Hershey, FCMC’s Director of Community Relations, who coor-dinates the program. “We receive formal requests from community members that are then presented to our group. We act on these requests

Helping One of Their Own: (l-r) Lab staffers Darlene Senft, Pam Taylor, Janis Cutchall and Sue Schooley present Barbara Weller (seated) with a gift from FCMC employees. The depart-ment raised funds through a basket raffle that generated $583.05, which the Angels helped promote.

– anything from gift cards for gas or groceries, to making gift baskets for raffles, to assisting with various community events. Instead of hav-ing a benefit for each particular per-son or cause, we thought it would be better to have quarterly internal fundraisers and divvy up the funds for the requests.” Such internal fundraisers have in-cluded sales for FCMC logo apparel, pizzas and hoagies and Schwan’s food. Last year’s sales efforts netted over $13,000, a new benchmark for the group. FCMC staffers pay a mod-est $10 start-up fee to belong to the group. Its rewards are priceless. “There are needs in many differ-

ent forms,” said Hershey, who gave an example of a couple recently who needed assistance with getting back and forth to FCMC for treatment. A gas card was provided. “Helping others is what we do – serving dinner for the Relay For Life Cancer Survivors and their care givers, volunteering for Special Olympics...whatever it may be, it’s about giving back to the community,” said Hershey. Weller credits Patti Hess in Cardio Rehab Services for the extended reach into the community.”People are in her exercise area all the time and she hears about a lot of the needs that we ultimately assist with...”

Emergency Department Expansion Project Completed In Three Monthssystem, which decreases the waste of medications due to expirations, allows for safer tracking and dis-pensing of medications, and it adds to patient safety.” He also is excited about the possi-bilities of the Telemedicine program. “It is a computerized televised link between Pinnacle Health and us; we are using it now for patients who have a stroke or stroke-like symp-toms. It allows a neurologist from Harrisburg to step into the patient’s room at Fulton County Medical Center, visualize the patient, talk with the patient and listen to the patient. Our nursing staff acts as the arms and the hands for that neurolo-gist. And based on that interaction, we can determine the best course of treatment. It is an available source 24 hours, seven days a week.” Swigart said Pinnacle has also agreed to expand the Telemedicine role with FCMC to the medical side,

specifically with wound identifica-tions, bone specialists and surgical specialists. “As the new manager of the Emer-gency Department, we are going to shoot for areas of expertise with the help of Telemedicine,” said Swigart. “We may not be able to keep ev-eryone (patients) here, but we will know what resources are needed for that patient and we will ensure their safety and stabilization; we will en-sure patients get exactly the service they need.” “The new GPS Approach System builds a roadmap to your medical center that allows us to fly to your facility without seeing it,” said Ron Brown, Medical Base Supervisor of Air Methods LifeNet 8-1. “If there is inclimate weather, we can still trans-port a patient based on the GPS...All we need to see is the Helipad from 400 to 500 feet before we land.” Swigart said, “By expanding

the Emergency Department, our biggest return is the return to the community. We’re able to pro-vide greater and speedier service because we will cut down the wait time.” Fulton County Medical Center is already above the national standard for the length of time a patient enters the Emergency Department until the time they are discharged, admitted or transferred to another facility. The standard is three hours. The FCMC average is 2.5 hours. “Very few hospitals or medical centers, especially one of our size, meet that standard,” said Swigart. “I’ve been saying since I arrived in August that Fulton County Medical Center is small but mighty.”

$27,547 Reasons To Say Thank YouGolfers, Sponsors, Volunteers Come Together For 20th Annual FCMC Foundation Golf Tournament

vercast skies and a consis-tent breeze didn’t dampen the spirits of 81 golfers who

played in the 20th Annual Fulton County Medical Center Foundation Golf Tournament at Great Cove Golf Course on Saturday, September 14. “To see everyone – sponsors, golf-ers and volunteers – come together for one cause is very fulfilling,” said Mike Straley, Executive Director of the FCMC Foundation. “This was truly a team effort to support the Emergency Department Expansion Project.” The winning team of Tyler Smith, Emmert Banzhoff, Foster Earley and Toby Souders carded a 54 to take home the top prize money

and traveling trophy for the second time in three years. The foursome of Andy Washabaugh, Carl Paylor, Jamie Greathead and Denver Trumpower placed second with a 58. There was a tie for third place: the foursome of Fred Peck, Harold Batdorff, Russell Harmon and Bill Yocum tied with Matthew Hale, Mark Hale, Tyson Hol-libaugh and Gary Bard as they shot a 60. The ever popular Ball Drop fielded 449 golf balls. Three people split the $1000 winnings: Marvin Kendall, Robin Straley and Susan Snyder, as a result of their balls landing in the cup. The tournament raised $27,547 towards the expansion project. The Emergency Department Ex-

pansion Project began in early July and was completed in October. The $250,000 project will provide ex-panded care, space and services to the community. “This project is needed based on the rising need of emergent care because more primary care providers are booked so far in advance,” said Dan Swigart, Emergency Department Manager. “With new health care regu-lations coming into play, more people will be turning to facilities like ours because of availability, convenience and less wait time.”

Donnie Kirby Will Be Guest Speaker

Chef Brad Hauver Preparing ’Feast’

InSide

hef Brad Hauver enjoys cooking for a crowd. Just don’t ask him what he makes for himself for dinner.

Hauver’s culinary skills will be on display Saturday eve-ning, January 25, at 5 p.m. at McConnellsburg Fire Hall, when he will be preparing a variety of dishes for the inaugural Wild Game Feast that benefits the FCMC Foundation’s Scholar-ship Fund.

“I’m looking forward to prepar-ing this menu,” said Hauver, who has worked at Saint James School since 2006. “Having been classi-cally and old world trained, this should be a lot of fun. It will be great to have the hunters sample wild game using some different applications and fresh ingredi-ents. Most won’t deviate from a few well-worn recipes that were

handed down through generations, and by no means am I trying to disrespect ‘Uncle Earl’s’ famous venison shoulder steak recipe. I will be there to field any questions folks may have concerning the menu items.” At age 16 Hauver was busing tables and washing dishes. A year later he was slinging hash. By his mid 20s, he had been a line cook with more than seven years of experience at some of the local high-end restaurants in the Tri-State area. By then he had reached a level where he could not advance without a college degree. He attended the Baltimore In-ternational Culinary College where he studied with “18 year olds.” He earned his Associates of Arts in Classical French Cuisine. He completed a six-month ap-prenticeship in Ireland at the Park Hotel where he trained under Master Chef Peter Timmons. They became friends and Timmons invited him to work beside him at various culinary salons throughout England, France and Ireland, including the Culinary Olympics held in Paris in 1992. Hauver returned to his Hagerstown, Maryland roots where he worked as head chef at the South Mountain Inn

C and sous chef at the Airport Inn before venturing into res-taurant ownership. Does he enjoy cooking at home? No. He had hamburger steak, gravy and oven fries the night before this interview. “If I can get someone to cook dinner for me, that’s the greatest thing in the world,” chimed Hauver. The event will also feature guest speaker Donnie Kirby. He is one of the four members that make up Team Legend Outdoors, which has traveled throughout the United States and Canada on hunting expeditions. He will talk about his favorite excursion, share his experiences working with youth and wounded veterans and will give a few hunting tips. “I’m looking forward to the evening,” said Kirby. “I’m an ordinary guy who loves to hunt. Our team has been fortunate to travel to a lot of great places to hunt and to film hunts. We have met a lot of great people. I hope the audience that night will enjoy some of my stories about those people, places and experiences.” Since 2001 Fulton County Medical Center has awarded scholarships (stipends) ranging from $250 to $1500 to area

students who are pursuing a career in health care. Graduating high school se-niors and college students are eligible to apply for financial assistance that requires formal paperwork and an in-terview process. Several students who received finan-cial assistance have returned to our area to apply their skills, and several recipients in 2013 have set goals to do the same. “We take pride in the fact

that our students of today want to return to their roots to serve their communities of tomorrow,” said Loy Garber, Scholarship Committee Chair.
