P R E S I D E N T ’ S M E S S A G EStrength in numbers is an understatement. Our HBA is one of top ten HBA’s in the nation for membership size and we should be proud of that! But that’s not good enough…we want more! Everyone knows someone who isn’t yet an HBASE member but could really benefit from joining the association. Your chance to sign them up is just around the corner during our annual Membership Drive.
THE MEMBERSHIP DRIVE WILL RUN FROM OCTOBER 3-13 BUT THAT MEANS THE MEMBERSHIP DISCUSSION WITH PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS NEEDS TO START NOW.Many business owners need time to review the information and get approval while others can take weeks to process the membership dues payment. I’m sure you have connections to someone who owns or manages a business that is not an HBASE member (at least not yet). Share with them what you get out of your membership and why membership is important to you and your business. You might be surprised at just how easy membership recruitment can be when you’re talking with people you already know. Builders, are all of your suppliers HBA members? And Associate members, are all of your builderrs HBA members? I encourage you to take a look at the HBASE membership list online to see if they’re members (www.hbasiouxempire.com).
Signing up for the Membership Drive is the easiest part. The Membership Committee has created some fun twists to this year’s drive and they want you to be a part of it. Just call the HBA office at 361-8322 or email [email protected] to sign up as a team of two or as an individual (to be paired with another member). See page 9 for more information.

How important is housing to the United States economy? It’s so important that one of Secretary Clinton’s top aids and Donald Trump both addressed our assembly in Miami. Both sides agree that keeping homes affordable and home building on track is one of the best ways to continue this country’s recovery. Federal Government Affairs: NAHB has just finished a study showing that as much as 24% of the cost of a new home can be contributed to government oversight and regulation. This has been and will continue to be a focus of NAHB. Lobbying in Washington to stop this government overreach is a real focus for our federation. Remember that every dollar you give to PAC goes to help this cause. Tax reform is another item that will be coming no matter who is in the White House.Young Professionals Committee: In this committee’s first year they have taken on a very aggressive agenda. They are very committed to making a positive impact on our federation by getting our younger members involved. Here are a few of the items they have accomplished in the first 8 months:• Young Professionals Toolkit (for local
HBAs looking to start their own YP Committee)
• Young Professional Award (nahb.org/youngprofessionalaward due by Oct. 21st)
• Mixer to be held at IBSBoard Meeting: The Executive Board brought a motion to the floor to push the $16 dues increase out 1 year. So the increase would go into effect in 2018. At IBS this January in Orlando, the very first NAHB Annual Meeting will be held. This will give attendees a first-hand look at how NAHB develops its priorities and creates action plans. Businesswoman and “Shark Tank” personality Barbara Corcoran will present her unique winning strategies for leading teams to success. If you plan on going to IBS please plan on attending this great event. Another exciting event coming out of January’s Board meeting is the election of Third Vice Chair Dean Mon (builder from NJ). He is a strong leader with a lot of energy and will be a strong voice for us. Find out more about Dean at www.Dean4NAHB.com.
Thank you for the opportunity to represent our association at the national level. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have issues or questions that I can help with. Thank you for all you do to support one of the most rewarding and vital industries in our country.
Remember to support one another by doing business with a member!
Sometimes we all need to just “go with the flow”…and that was the theme at this summer’s board meeting in Miami. With elections coming up, there was much needed discussion regarding pro-housing candidates (both Congressional and Presidential). It made for an interesting week, as we had a lot of disruption in our meeting schedules in order to offer the opportunity to hear our guest speakers, Gene Sperling and Donald Trump. Mr. Sperling is the Chief Economic Advisor to Hillary Clinton, and he joined us to discuss Mrs. Clinton’s economic agenda. After listening to Mr. Sperling, I just really felt like he was in over his head, as when asked questions regarding Secretary Clinton’s stance on issues, he did a great job of “skirting” the questions. He was a good speaker, very humorous and such, but just not a lot of content.Donald Trump talked about the over regulation of our industry, and his pledge to STOP adding cost for regulation to the price of housing. He talked about his father being a homebuilder, and his affiliation with construction himself. Associates Committee: Our group is excited to announce that we’re well on our way to getting the Leadership Grants off the ground, and we hope to have the first recipients at IBS 2018. The working group is still planning strategies, but fundraising is underway! These grants will allow Associate members the opportunity to attend national meetings if their state doesn’t have funds to send them.Additionally, we have announced our new “Associates of Excellence”
reception that will be held at IBS 2017. This reception will take the place of our old Associates Breakfast. We have streamlined awards procedures, streamlined the reception and we’ll be getting some press at the NAHB Annual Meeting for our winners.BuildPAC/Advocacy: By investing in BuildPAC, you are investing in yourself, in your trade and in housing in general! As of the beginning of midyear board, BuildPAC had raised over $2.4 million of their $3 million dollar goal for this two-year election cycle.BuildPAC chairman Graff recognized South Dakota several times for our efforts. We will continue to ask each member of our association to give as little as $25, to stop excessive regulation and support the right candidates in congress! We are less than 100 days until the election, so give what you can! South Dakota reached over 340% of our goal, much of that came from the Sioux Empire. We will continue to make the ask, so please give your fair share. On a side note: Representative Kristi Noem was the recipient of NAHB’s Defender of Housing Award for South Dakota. Thank Congresswoman Noem when you see her!Membership Committee: Our membership is somewhat stagnant for the year, but we’re launching a new membership campaign for fall 2016 where we will “Open Our Doors” and “Welcome Home” new members.Structured payments will finally be launching next year in test markets, so that will help us toward our goals of a common payment process for locals, state and national dues. Public Affairs: Our working group within Public Affairs has been working with Grassroots Efforts and I’m excited to announce that we met with EO’s from around the association to share with them our vision for 2017 and beyond. We will be utilizing short video messages from our senior leadership in the future for both educational items as well as call to action items. We are also enhancing NAHB’s advocacy app so it’s easier to navigate and get the word out about what we’re fighting for.
Board of Directors: Chairman Ed Brady has added a “Town Hall” discussion in the middle of our board meeting. This segment will afford our members the opportunity to go one on one with our Senior Officers on a variety of topics, plus open dialogue on items that might not normally be heard.Probably the most significant item that came up was delaying the dues increase from 2017 to 2018. While the board was overwhelmingly in favor of this, we need to cast our final votes at IBS 2017 (as the increase is already in the budget). Chief Executive Officer Jerry Howard gave us a report on the expired US/Canadian Lumber Agreement. The agreement expired last year and nothing has been finalized to renew as of yet. Our leadership recognizes that we want to use domestic lumber first and foremost, but we need additional resources for lumber. If Canada and the US cannot come to terms, we have been looking into striking a deal to utilize Chilean lumber going forward. Canada is our best option, but we’re being proactive, as we need finalize an agreement soon. International Builders' Show (IBS) 2017: Some fun facts for next year’s International Builders Show in Orlando…Shark Tank’s own Barbara Corcoran will present her winning strategies for success. Peyton Manning will be the Keynote Speaker at IBS’s Opening Ceremonies.Lastly, the Spike Party will feature Little Big Town, which will be a fantastic show to end the week. Recruit new members…get tickets (or purchase tickets). Come and join the fun!! Remember...by investing in BuildPAC, you are investing in housing.
