HORIZON FALL 2012 THE WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION STRIVES TO ENHANCE A COMMUNITY OF LEARNING EXCELLENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FACULTY THROUGH PHILANTHROPY AND STEWARDSHIP. Donor support makes opportunity possible Sam Ramey, the premier operatic bass-baritone of the 20th century and the most recorded opera singer in history, is now sharing his musical expertise with vocal students at Wichita State. Ramey is the recipient of the WSU Guest Artist Fellowship in Opera, a position that is funded entirely through private support. To date, six donors have stepped forward to help establish the fund: Mickey Armstrong, Bill and Dorothy Cohen, George and Brenda Farha, Anita Jones, Dennis and Ann Ross, and WSU Music Associates, a pooled donor fund that provides educational and cultural opportunities for students in the WSU School of Music. The donors have contributed enough to cover the first few years, but more money will be needed to fund the proposed five- year plan. “When a world-renowned opera singer contacts his alma mater and expresses that he wishes to be engaged with our students, we want to find a way to bring him here,” said Elizabeth King, president and CEO of the WSU Foundation. “Equal to Sam reaching out to WSU is having donors who understand what a coup it is for our students, who will gain invaluable knowledge from studying under such a master teacher. “With diminished state dollars, the only way Wichita State can provide enhancements such as this is through private support.” Ramey’s first session ran Sept. 24-Oct. 5. For spring semester, he will be here Jan. 28-Feb. 9 and March 4-16. Ramey will teach several weeks each semester. About 25 to 30 WSU graduate and undergraduate students will have one-on-one time with Ramey and close to 100 students will benefit from his erudition in group settings per semester. Ramey’s responsibilities will include private coaching sessions, graduate seminars, voice studio master classes and directing one concert in the spring. He may attend opera rehearsals to help students with role preparation. “This is going to be an enhancement of the student experience at WSU incomparable to any other because very rarely do students have the opportunity to work with someone at the top who was literally in their shoes at one time,” said Rodney Miller, dean of the WSU College of Fine Arts. Ramey, who grew up in Colby, Kan., singing bass in the Methodist Church choir, graduated from Wichita State in 1968 with a Bachelor of Music in music performance. He established the Samuel Ramey Opera Fellowship at WSU in 1994. Ramey is a life member of the WSU Alumni Association, from which he received the Alumni Achievement Award, and is a member of the WSU Foundation President’s Club. A lot happened in Jennifer Muehlebach’s life five years ago. Her marriage of nine years ended in divorce, leaving her with two young children to raise. And she decided to go back to college. “I knew my kids would be going to college someday, and I had no way to pay for that without a college education of my own,” she said. “I knew I would have a more fulfilling job and career by having a college degree.” Though nervous about the prospect of trying to get a degree while working and raising Lucy, now 12, and Sam, now 6, she took the plunge and enrolled at Wichita State. Last year, Muehlebach graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders. Now she’s pursuing a clinical doctorate in audiology. She’s certain she wouldn’t be where she is today without receiving the Turner Family Endowed Scholarship for two years in a row, established by Rhonda Turner to help single mothers attend college. “I would say it changed the course of my education and my life,” Muehlebach says. “I didn’t have to work during

those two years and I took out very few student loans. I was able to devote myself to the two most important things in my life, my children and my education.” That’s exactly the kind of difference Turner wanted to make when she established the scholarship in 2007. As a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, she sees the hardships single mothers often encounter. “I’m very well aware that a single mother has a lot harder road to travel, especially having to juggle work, family, school,” says Turner, who provides counseling in her job at Pathway Church and as a volunteer at Grace Med Health Clinic. “Having a family is a wonderful thing, but the additional responsibility makes it so much harder for a young woman to attend college and really focus on her education.” Turner graduated cum laude from Wichita State in 1975, earning a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She is married to Jeff Turner, CEO of Spirit

AeroSystems, and she serves as a board member for Wichita Children’s Home. She dedicated a portion of her salary to support the scholarship for single mothers. “I value education and I especially see the need for single mothers to be able to provide for their families in a better way through education,” Turner says. Muehlebach intends to seek a career as an audiologist after graduate school. “I graduated with a 3.7 GPA after starting with a 2.1 GPA,” she says of her time as an undergraduate. “I was able to do that because I didn’t have to work. And because of my good grades, I was able to pursue my doctorate. Now, when I tell my kids that education is important, they know what I mean. They see it themselves.”

More than 170 attendees at the WSU Retirement Coffee on Sept. 4 were welcomed by James Rhatigan, consultant for the WSU Foundation and the WSU Alumni Association. He expressed his appreciation for the largest turnout in the history of the event. “Our first meeting was a luncheon in 1967,” Rhatigan said, “involving 22 retirees. It followed the president’s opening convocation for faculty and gave retired faculty a longer time together. It has continued ever since. I am so happy to see so many of you here today reuniting and continuing your friendships formed at Wichita State.” WSU President John Bardo spoke of the excitement he and

his wife, Deborah, who also was in attendance, are experiencing about being back. “We came back because the university is special, the city is special and both have great potential,” he said. He discussed his five areas of interest for the future of WSU and thanked the attendees for their positive contributions to the university during their time here. “We want to continue the emphasis that you placed on building a great university — that’s the direction we want to go.” Rhatigan entertained the audience with stories of humorous things that happened during his 30-plus years in student life at WSU.

Russian cellist and WSU freshman, Maria Begacheva, performed accompanied by pianist K.C. Graham, who played on the Yamaha grand piano, a new addition to the Marcus Welcome Center thanks to donors Sue '68 and James '73 Janson. Begacheva is considered to be one of the finest cellists ever to attend the College of Fine Arts. She is a scholarship student of Leonid Shukayev of the St. Petersburg String Quartet at WSU and a recipient of a scholarship from the Abercrombie Scholars Endowed Fund. Begacheva is majoring in cello performance.

“I’m very well aware that a single mother has a lot harder road to travel.”

Jennifer Muehlebach knows that with a college education, she’ll be able to provide better futures for Lucy, 12, and Sam, 6. She received the Turner Family Endowed Scholarship for two years at Wichita State.

“Our first meeting was a luncheon in 1967,” Rhatigan said, “involving 22 retirees."

Dr. James Rhatigan shares a laugh with Maurice and Jeanine Pfannestiel as they arrive at the 2012 Retirement Coffee on Sept. 4. Maurice is associate professor emeritus of economics.

David Farnsworth, professor emeritus of political science, and Orpha Duell, professor emeritus of administration, counseling, education and school psychology, enjoy their visit at the Sept. 4 Retirement Coffee.

Page 3: Fall Horizon

This is the last installment of a three-part series with WSU President John Bardo. To read the full answers to these questions and others, please go to the online version of the Fall Horizon on our website at wichita.edu/foundation.

How will you help WSU foster more innovation and creativity? I differentiate creativity and innovation and I see creativity as the base on which innovation occurs. Innovation, in my mind, is the realization of creativity in a way that makes a difference. Universities that encourage creativity and innovation focus on creating a culture that both values and rewards these activities. I am going to be working with the

Faculty Senate, the deans and others to see what we can do to promote and reward innovation within the WSU context. For example, I have great interest in creating a “Skunk Works” to allow small clusters of faculty to explore new ways of teaching that promote both student learning and student satisfaction on the one hand and containing costs per FTE student on the other. (A Skunk Works is a term of art that designates an entity that is given freedom to experiment without all of the normal organizational constraints.) There are some very interesting innovations that involve public-private partnerships and the development of new campus models.

I will encourage collaboration across disciplines and colleges and will try to work with the faculty, staff and administration to find ways to reduce bureaucratic impediments to such collaboration and to reward those who are willing to find new ways to teach, study and learn that enhance creative, logical and finally, innovative, actions.

Why is it important to you to create a steering committee of campus and community representatives and what do you hope to learn? Public universities like WSU were developed to serve the needs of the people of the various states. These needs have changed over time and universities have become

4

increasingly central to the future of the communities they serve. Public universities are the “people’s universities” and therefore it is important to address the people’s educational needs and interests.

How will this committee help guide future fundraising priorities? Fundraising works when there is a match between the donors’ interests and the direction of the university. The planning process will clarify for us both what we will emphasize and where we have the greatest needs. This will help us develop fundraising priorities and look at how we approach fundraising over the next five to 10 years.

What specific interests does Mrs. Bardo have regarding campus issues and activities? I think that you will find that Deborah is a very informal person who enjoys hosting people in our home and interacting with students. She grew up in Wichita. Her father worked at Cessna and her mother worked as a teacher’s aide. She understands the importance of this university to the people of the region and she is interested in helping children recognize that they, too, can get an education and create better lives for themselves and their families. You are likely to see her volunteering in a school, helping with a bake sale or adopting a WSU student who just needs a campus mom.

"Deborah is interested in helping children recognize that they, too, can get an education and create better lives for themselves and their families."

WSU President John Bardo visits with Mike Lamb, WSU Foundation vice president for planned and annual giving, and Diana Gordon, WSU Foundation director of development for the College of Fine Arts, before the WSU Foundation’s annual retreat at which Bardo was the first speaker of the day, sharing his vision for WSU.

WSU President John Bardo and First Lady Deborah enjoy visiting with former staff and faculty at the 2012 Retirement Coffee hosted by James Rhatigan, WSU Foundation and WSU Alumni Association consultant, on Sept. 4 at the Marcus Welcome Center.

Coming later this fall, all members entering our giving clubs during fiscal year 2012 will be recognized in the WSU Foundation annual report, which will be found on our website at wichita.edu/foundation. Look for an email announcing its arrival. Thank you for each and every gift you’ve made to ensure a quality education for everyone at Wichita State. It is so rewarding to stop and celebrate the many achievements you have helped us obtain. But it is difficult to linger because of

our excitement as we look forward to the vision of and new opportunities with WSU President Bardo. Please join us as we continue to have an impact on today and make a difference in the future.

Dear Shocker Nation, Last year I talked about the many fundraising initiatives that were launched. This year, I’m proud to report on their successes! Staff and students have moved into the new Advanced Education in General Dentistry building on North Oliver Street and in addition to the learning that’s going on, community members are reaping the benefits of having professional-level students available to perform dental services. The Promise for the Future planned giving campaign celebrated meeting its goal of documenting

100 new legacy gifts to help secure the future of Wichita State. The Rhatigan Renewal is in full swing with completion scheduled for 2014, including the new Shirley Beggs Ballroom plus many more exciting features. The Rhatigan Student Center will truly be the renewed treasure of the campus. And, the Miró mosaic has been removed and is being prepared for re-installation in 2016. In this extended issue of the Fall Horizon, we are pleased to acknowledge the loyal donors who have joined other representatives of the Fairmount Society

Fine finales and perfect progress
