Have you noticed a few changes in and around the Krasl Art Center? We have three wonderful staff receptionists, in addition to our dedicated volunteers, working at the front desk during the KAC’s public hours. These individuals help volunteers to ensure that all of your registration needs, exhibition questions, phone inquiries and shopping experiences are attended to. Whatever your need, we are working toward meeting it at the front desk. The KAC staff and volunteers have been patient, gracious and diligent as we implement many new ideas. I thank them for their dedication and thank you for your support as we continue to make the small and large changes necessary to raise our standard of excellence. I would love to hear your feedback, [email protected].

I would like to extend a big thank you to outgoing board members Jacquie Johnson, Jerry Sirk and Barbara Peeples for their leadership and commitment to the KAC. George Krasl Memorial Concert The Citadel Symphony ChorusThursday, October 13, 7:30 pmRSVP to the Krasl Art Center. Donations are appreciated.

The Citadel Symphony Chorus will perform music inspired by the art of Toulouse Lautrec. Featuring selections from Brahms “Liebeslieder Waltzes”, and light-hearted songs of love. The chorus will also perform music by contemporary French composers such as Faure and Poulenc.  Soloists from the chorus will sing vocal music from the era.

Art Fair Wrapup 50th Anniversary Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff, Presented by Schu’s Grille & BarThis was a stellar year for the Krasl Art Fair! Our 50th anniversary celebration was marked by increased attendance; artist sales; patron, sponsor and volunteer participation; and revenue. As artist Roberta Hummel said “yours is the BEST outdoor art fair I have ever participated in”. We are always honored and humbled by the outpouring of good will at the art fair. We thank our sponsors, members, volunteers, and of course the 216 participating artists for helping to create one of the top art fairs in the country.

Posters, Fans & Songbooks: 19th Century Prints by Toulouse-Lautrec and his Contemporaries September 16 – October 30

Opening Reception: Friday, September 16, 5:30-7:30 pm

Posters, Fans & Songbooks is a one-time only, unique exhibition guest curated by art historian Dr. Claire Kovacs (Coe College, Cedar rapids, Iowa). This exhibit showcases fifty graphic works of art by popular French artists of the 19th century. All of the works on view are culled from the Robert L. Hoskins and Erwin A. Raible Collection of Fin de Siècle French Prints at Grand Valley State University (gifted to the university by Elaine Rutowski Shaw).

The exhibition offers the rare opportunity to step back in time and imagine life in fin-de-siècle Paris, a time remembered for its cafés, nightclubs, the Cancan and absinthe. Graphically stunning images by artists including Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard and Jules Chéret, are contextualized to provide background information on the history of 19th century advertising, department stores, the urban fabric of Paris and the development of a collecting culture. Additionally, the exhibition reveals the fascinating path that objects take from being simply, everyday objects to highly prized works of fine art.

Lecture: Miracle Whip, Purses and Human Rights: Contemporary Art and Advertisingby Guest Curator Dr. Claire KovacsSaturday, September 17, 12 pm

Posters, Fans and Songbooks questions the lines between advertising and art in late nineteenth-century Parisian society. This lecture will continue the conversation, asking similar questions, but addressing them in the contemporary moment. From music videos, fashion design and street art, this lecture provides fascinating insights linking the 19th century to the present.

For centuries artists have been moved to depict water, which is testimony to its aesthetic power and many meanings – concrete and metaphoric. Organized around three themes – water as power, water

as life source, and water as environmental concern – Flow demonstrates the importance of water in society and art. This exhibition is a program of ExhibitsUSA, a national division of Mid-America Arts Alliance and the National Endowment of the Arts. Artworks displayed are on loan from the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Members Exhibition Opportunity: In 3D January 27-February 26, 2012.

For an entire year, all Krasl Art Center exhibitions will focus on three-dimensional forms. The members’ show will continue this theme and as a result, we ask that all artworks incorporate a thematic or physical exploration of the three-dimensional form. ‘How’ is up to you! Artworks and application may be submitted January 18-22, 2012.

artlab is a gallery space dedicated to installation, time-based media, sound and light.

artlab is not afraid to showcase the fruit of visual experimentation; it does not require a ‘finished product’ or an ‘established artist.’

artlab artist talk: Thursday, September 15 @ 7 pm in the lab

Artist Jodie Hardy investigates the effects of advertising on the everyday landscape in this new project, premiering in the artlab. Hardy graphically illustrates the very real and competing forces of man-made materials and nature through video footage, painted images, and constructed signs. The artist has held a long-standing interest in advertising culture and its influence; only currently has this study transferred over to its impact on the landscape around us.

Jennifer RogersNovember 18, 2011 – January 8, 2012

artlab artist talk: Thursday, November 17 @ 7 pm in the lab

Iowa-based artist Jennifer Rogers stacks, piles, suspends, arranges and assembles objects, performing repetitive, simple and often unremarkable acts that are mimetic of daily chores in the home. In doing so, Rogers exposes correlations between artistic practice and daily life. It is Rogers’ aim to highlight through the making and final installation of her art the extent to which individuals senselessly, and at times compulsively, struggle to sterilize, organize and simplify their lives. Her installation in the artlab visually showcases the fruit of this labor.

The KAC is excited to offer a roster of Thursday programs that foster creative thinking and intellectual stimulation. All Thoughtful Thursday programs are free and open to the public.

1st Thursday of every monthCoffee with the Curator @ 11 amDiscover behind-the-scenes anecdotes about artists and installations, discuss the art on the walls, or listen to a focused talk about artworks in the community. Coffee with the Curator is an informal presentation and discussion in the Krasl Art Center galleries; it begins October 6.

2nd Thursday of every monthBook Discussion @ 7 pmJoin artist Jodie Hardy and librarian Carol Dudding in a lively and engaging book discussion on the second Thursday of each month. Book Discussion is a partner program with the Maud Preston Palenske Memorial Library. Books will be lent to participants free of charge from the library and discussions will take place at the Krasl Art Center. Coffee provided by Biggby Coffee.

Letter from EducationFrom animal sculpture to barnyard architecture, this summer has been a whole lot of Fine Art Farm fun at the KAC. Playing off of the barnyard sculptures in downtown St. Joseph, children have enjoyed a little bit of country throughout our Summer Art Camps. I’d like to extend a big thank you to Kim Wood, this year’s Summer Art Camp Manager, for her incredible enthusiasm, resourcefulness and effective leadership throughout our art camp season. I’d also like to thank our teen counselors, KAC faculty and all of the families who once again supported and participated in our Summer Art Camp. Nice job y’all!

Fall Classes September 26 through December 18Here are some of this fall’s highlights! For full listings and descriptions of classes, see the Fall Class Schedule available at www.krasl.org.

From Artful Fall to Sculptural Explorations, several new classes for children ages 4-6, 6-9 and 9-12 will take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 4-5:30 pm. Children will work with 2-D and 3-D media, explore the galleries and sculpture garden and play games to foster creative art making.

A new year-long Portfolio Development class will be offered for teens, beginning Thursday, October 6, 3:30-6 pm. 9th-12th grade students looking to create a class-act visual arts portfolio for college are encouraged to register!

Adult workshops include Hand-Knitted Wire Workshop with Joanie Flynn, Oct. 15, 9:30 am -12:30 pm, Nuno Felting with Marilyn Mussman, Oct. 15, 9:30 am - 4:30 pm, and Trash Cams with Andy Sawyer, Oct. 15 and Oct. 22, 10 am - 2 pm.

Holiday Break ShortsDecember 27-29, January 3-5, 2012; 10 am-12 pmAvoid cabin fever by registering children ages 4-6 and 7-12 for Holiday Break Shorts. Classes range from ceramics and paper making to drawing and collage.

School and Community Group ProgramsSchools, scouting troops, church groups and more are invited to schedule a docent led tour through the following programs. Tours are customized for each age group, from preschool to adult. For more information or to schedule your tour, please contact [email protected].

Understanding Art 90 minute dynamic tours that support each exhibitions in the galleries. Includes art making in the studios related to the artwork on view. $2 per child, tour rates for adults vary.

SculpTour 45-60 minute historical tour of the KAC sculpture garden as well as memorials and sculptures along Lake Bluff Park. $45 per tour.

Art Touch Hands-on tour of cultural artifacts which travels to you! Cultural kits include: African Odyssey, Ancient Greece, Potawatomi: Keepers of the Fire, Sculpture Alive, Far East Fantasies, Hola Mexico and Discovering Islam. Each 45-60 minute presentation includes a cultural guide book. $45 per presentation + mileage

Family Open Studios (FOS)Families of all ages are welcome to drop in for a FOS session, the 2nd Sunday of each month (except July), 2-3:30pm. Enjoy exhibition related art explorations in the studios! Sign up for a family membership to attend at a discounted rate! Fee per session: $10 per member family /$25 per non-member

Great Graphics, October 9, Create a classic looking poster utilizing collaged images, paint or markers, inspired by Toulouse Lautrec.

Water World, November 13, Drip, draw, and paint the afternoon away with water based media, all inspired by the KAC water themed exhibit: Flow, opening November 18.

Winter Wonders, December 11, Continue to explore water based media while making one-of-a kind snowflakes and fresh winter landscape paintings.

Kids Art WorkshopsAvailable at each opening reception, children can enjoy exhibition-inspired art making in the studios while guardians attend the reception.

The Krasl Art Center is excited to announce the appointment of Joshua Nowicki as the Director of Community Relations.  Joshua comes to the Krasl Art Center from the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan where he worked in variety of roles from archivist to marketing and graphic design.  As the Director of Community Relations, he is charged with maintaining the organization’s position in the community, and raising awareness about the KAC throughout the region and state.

Joshua is looking forward to working with you to ensure that every visit to the KAC is both educational and full of fun and excitement.  “Art and museums have always been an important part of my life. . .  I am very fortunate and happy to have the opportunity to share my love of both.”

Anna Petlick

Spotlight on the Volunteer of the Season Anna Petlick, a recent graduate from St. Joseph High School, is the Krasl Art Center Volunteer of the Season. For the past three summers Anna has volunteered as an Education Assistant, helping administer classes and camps, studio maintenance, and creating art projects for children for the KAC birthday program. Anna has also been a wonderful Summer Art Camp counselor for the past two years. Anna’s first involvement with the KAC was as a young girl taking a ceramics class. Her family’s home still affectionately displays her smiling ceramic blueberry pancake. Anna returned to the KAC in 2008 looking for further after school classes to improve her drawing skills, and she soon became family. From precious metal clay to ceramics, Anna says that her learning experiences at the KAC have been ‘really amazing.’ Through her participation as a student, a volunteer and a counselor, Anna has built confidence, gained friendships and has participated in opportunities that have “done so many things to help shape my life.” She’ll be attending Grand Valley State University this fall to study art and art education. We look forward to working with her in the future.
