Bill Though St. Luke often speaks of the reign (or the kingdom) of God and Jesus is often referred to as Lord in Luke's Gospel, the title of king is only given to Jesus in the accounts of His triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the way to His passion. Clearly, according to St. Luke, Jesus intend- ed to emphasize the radical difference between His kingship and that of the lords of this world who desire power, honor, or wealth. The stark contrast is poignantly illustrated in His cruci-fixion. Crucified between two criminals, Jesus first turns to His Father, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do." At this grand finale, the summit of the Gospel, we see two groups: one sympathetic to Jesus and the other His oppo- nent. Among the first group are the collection of people characterized as those "who stood there watching." Their thoughts about what was hap- pening is seldom stated, but their chief characteristic seems to be a watchful expectancy. Luke uses a Greek verb for watching which in the Christian vocabulary implies active contemplation more than passive staring. With a touch of his linguistic brush, St. Luke draws all disciples into this scene. However, the exchange between Jesus and the good thief catches our contemplative eye. The good thief reproaches his com- panion in misfortune for the man's lack of fear for God. The repentant thief who is going to die at Jesus' side says, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." His use of the familiar name Jesus con- trasts with the content of his petition. Does the thief know that the name Jesus means "God saves?" This thief is the model of all who are in an- guish and distress at the moment of death and who utter, in the ultimate leap of faith and hope, the Name, above all others and the Name from which comes salvation. The Lord responds, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise." In a solemn manner, filled with divine authority, Jesus offers the repentant thief assurance that goes beyond what he asked for. Salvation is to be with Jesus through faith and the sacraments of faith, living each day by His side. Finally, paradise is the heavenly dwelling Jesus prepares for His disciples, as the Father pre- pared it for Christ. This is the kingdom into which Christ the King enters through His death, into which He brings with Him those who undergo that same Passover from death to life!
