FAIR HISTORY

In 1935, John E. Frenkel Sr. was the City Clerk for the City ofPensacola and the City permitting agent. He began the PensacolaInterstate Fair at the request of Mr. Whittie Weis of Royal American Shows, the largest carnival in the United States.

Mr. Weis, knowing that Mr. Frenkel had experience in promotion andan exceptionally good relationship with many citizens of Pensacola andEscambia County, asked him to assemble a group that would be interestedin putting on the first fair. Mr. Frenkel was very instrumental in putting onthe first Mardi Gras event and other local events. He also started WCOA,Pensacola’s first radio station. Because of his expertise in promoting theseventures, he was well-equipped with the knowledge to take on the fair.

The first Fair (1935) was held at Cervantes Street and Pace Boulevard. From there, it moved to Garden Street and Pace Boulevard. In 1940, theFair purchased its first permanent location on Pottery Plant Road, laterknown as Fairfield Drive. Then in 1942, the Fair was reorganized as anon-profit organization and it’s charter was locally incorporated by theBoard of County Commissioners and verified by County Judge Fabasinski.

The Fair thrived at this location for over 20 years until the property wassold for a local development. In 1968, the Fair purchased the piece ofproperty on Highway 90 (6655 Mobile Highway). The fairground wasbuilt from the ground up, and the first Fair was held at this location in1969. The Fair now owns over 170 acres of land at this site.

The Fair began with John E. Frenkel Sr., his wife Lillian, and 30 fairmembers. Over the years it has become one of the finest and largest fairsin the United States with a staff of nine and more than 400 volunteers. Many volunteers are local clubs and individuals who serve to showcase awonderful array of exhibits. Livestock and poultry also play a major role at the Fair.

The Fair brings a stimulating, satisfying, stirring and sparkling celebra-tion of education, entertainment and information to Pensacola. We areextremely proud to be part of the economy and growth of Pensacola yearafter year...and proud to say, “The Fair is Good For Pensacola.”

Members of the Pensacola Interstate Fair wish to extend their sincereand lasting appreciation to all those people and organizations who havecontributed so much, labored so hard, and shown their interest year afteryear. As a result, the Fair is firmly established as a part of Pensacola’scommunity life and business.
