Here comes the sun… Here comes the sun… And I say, it’s all right… Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here.

This classic Beatles song is perfect for this time of year. The grass is green, flowers are blooming and the entire community is a buzz about getting outside and enjoying all that Acadiana has to offer.

As a kid growing up in Lafayette in the 60s & 70s, I have fond memories of spring. The Spring Family Fair in Girard Park, eating burgers at Burger Chef or catching a movie at the Center Cinema. It was a simple time. The distractions were limited and the time you spent with your family was quality time.

Today, Lafayette is all grown up. It’s sophisticated, it’s busy, it’s growing, it’s industrious and we’re no longer Coon***s, we’re Cajuns — and proud of it! It’s a community that [thanks to some forward thinking people] is in full bloom. From festivals and carnivals to the arts and almost every childhood sport you can think of, Lafayette and the Acadiana Parishes are very fortunate.

But more so, we should be proud – proud that through the economic growth and diversity, we were somehow able to maintain our sense of family. Acadiana Pride goes way back, but the love of family is timeless, just as a smile on a child’s face is priceless. Make time for some quality time with a child. No matter if it’s your kids or a child in need, help make some great memories for our future generations and yourself.

Here comes the sun… Here comes the sun… And I say, it’s all right…

Until next time,

— Flint

Dear Neighbors, As a nurse for over 25 years, I’ve dedicated my life to bringing the best possible care to patients and their families. I can tell you without hesitation that the compassion and patient focus found here at the Heart Hospital of Lafayette is beyond comparison. Our founding physicians started with the goal of creating a cardiac specialty hospital like no other, and that goal has been achieved. Having the opportunity to join this innovative team, dedicated solely to caring for the hearts of our community, has truly been an inspiration to me. As Chief Operating Officer, it is my privilege and pleasure to work with such dedicated physicians, nurses and associates, each one taking great pride in making the Heart Hospital of Lafayette the best that it can be each and every day. While I am proud of the many awards and accolades our team has received over the years, the real story lies within each of the patients we’ve healed and the families we’ve touched. The media floods us with images and stories of people who have lost 100 pounds, or even more. For many people this goal seems completely out of reach. How do these people do it? What are their secrets? Could it be one of the latest fad diets, some of those energy boosting pills, or one of those fancy new exercise machines? The answers may not be what you would expect.

Let’s first talk about a step that is often forgotten, which is goal setting. Setting S.M.A.R.T. goals is a step that can keep you going in the right direction. S.M.A.R.T. stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Your fitness or weight loss goal should include each aspect of the S.M.A.R.T. goal. An example of a S.M.A.R.T. goal might be “I will lose 25 pounds (specific, attainable) in 6 months (timely, realistic) by exercising 5 days per week at the gym (measurable, specific). Including all five aspects of the S.M.A.R.T. goal helps to prevent the frustration of an unfocused and failed attempt at improving your life. Write out

Taking on too much change at once can lead us to feel overwhelmed and burned out. Small steps can feel like small successes and can keep you looking forward to your next success.

your goal using the S.M.A.R.T. acronym and be sure to keep it handy as a reminder.

Seeking support from others for your weight loss journey is a critical step. Talk to your family, friends and coworkers about how important these changes you are making are to you and how much their support can help. If possible, hiring a personal trainer to educate you and cheer you on can help lift you out of the rut that we all fall in to from time to time. Remember that you are not the only person struggling to reach

your goals. Find someone to be a weight loss buddy and check in with each other every day. If you don’t know anyone who can fill this role look online or for a weight loss support group.

Those who lose 100 pounds or more usually don’t say that they did it by making sudden, drastic life changes. More often they have made small, progressive changes. Small changes such as going for walks on nice days, switching from cream to skim milk in your coffee, or eliminating one soda per day can make a difference

in the long run. Taking on too much change at once can lead us to feel overwhelmed and burned out. Small steps can feel like small successes and can keep you looking forward to your next success.

Keeping a nutrition and activity journal can provide you with valuable insight and help to keep you accountable. Take a few minutes each day to write down what you have eaten, what you did for activity, and how you felt. Later you can look back and see how a certain way of eating or certain activities made you feel and how successful it was for you. You may realize that on days when you do not eat often enough you feel tired and unmotivated to work out, or you may learn that eating healthy and balanced meals throughout the day prevents you from craving junk food at night. Looking back through your journal can also provide some inspiration when you are struggling.

Major weight loss happens one step at a time. Becoming a success story may not be as out of reach as it seems. Do not hesitate to get others involved in your weight loss efforts and reach out for help when you need it. Focus on your goals. Start small and you can achieve big things.

Bananas. They’re easy to eat and good for you. Bananas will keep you full because they are high in fiber and contain resistant starch, a healthy carbohydrate helps you feel full and satiated. Healthy carbohydrates give your body a quick shot of energy. Bananas are one of the best sources for potassium, and also contain vitamins A and B.

Eggs. It turns out the old breakfast staple, eggs, are actually a healthy choice. While high in cholesterol, eggs are a fine choice for breakfast as long as you limit your intake of cholesterol from other sources. Luckily, eggs are an excellent source for the protein your body needs to replenish energy. Eggs also contain antioxidants, B vitamins, iron, and vitamin D.

Whole Grain Oatmeal. Whole grain oatmeal is a great source for both fiber, which will keep you full and energetic for a longer time, and many vitamins, such as magnesium, potassium, selenium, and B vitamins. Oats even contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for many basic body functions.

Cantaloupe. Most fruits are excellent for staving off hunger because their high water content helps keep you full. Melons like cantaloupe are a good choice for a breakfast food. Cantaloupe is also low in calories but high in vitamin A and vitamin C. It also provides valuable nutrients like potassium, manganese, and B vitamins.

Greek Yogurt. Known as a ‘super food’, it lives up to its reputation. It contains twice as much protein as normal yogurt (a product already high in protein), making Greek yogurt one of the best energy boosting foods. However, watch out for flavored varieties of Greek yogurt — they contain unneeded sugar and additives. A plain, nonfat version is healthier.

Flax Seeds. These are high in fiber, giving you long lasting energy to make it through the day. Fiber also helps keep your digestive system operating properly. Flax seeds are good for you in other ways, too — the plant product contains the antioxidant lignin, omega-3 fatty acids, and healthy fats. Flax seeds are a versatile food often used as an ingredient in many dishes.

Healthy, Nutritious Foods That Are

Perfect For BreakfastConsuming a healthy breakfast will enhance your concentration, raise your energy levels, and help you control eating by reducing hunger. Though the foods here are listed separately, that doesn’t mean you should eat only one per day. In fact, combining nutritious foods from different food groups into your breakfast is a good idea.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – so make sure you choose healthy foods for your next breakfast.

Running is said to be the king

of sports. With the possible exception

of swimming, there are few physical

activities that develop cardiovascular

fitness as effectively as running. Aside

from developing fitness, there are many

other benefits to taking up the sport.

It is no exaggeration to say

4. An appreciation for the great outdoors

There is nothing quite like the exhilaration of being free to enjoy the great outdoors. All manner of adventures await; from off-road trails and undiscovered areas of hidden beauty to gruelling runs in extreme weather, every run can be different and lies just outside your own front door. The feeling of freedom and exploration is highly addictive; before long, you’ll be daydreaming at work about your next run and where it will take you.

3. A chance to make new friends

A new hobby can be a great way to meet people with similar interests to your own. Joining a running club is perhaps the best way of making new friends; there is nothing quite like the camaraderie that develops through shared challenges, setbacks, goals and achievements. Even if you choose not to join a running club, your new hobby will enable you to engage in conversation with other enthusiasts.

2. A new hobby that costs nothing

Running is probably one of the cheapest of sports or hobbies to take up. Apart from the cost of a decent pair of running shoes, there really are very few expenses to pay. There are no gym memberships, no equipment costs, no maintenance fees; all you need to do is pull on your running shoes, lace them up and get out into the big wide world.

1. Improved fitness

Running is one of the best activities for improving aerobic fitness. Starting with a few gentle runs or even just walking, aerobic fitness can improve dramatically over a short space of time.  The improvement in aerobic fitness is typically noticed as an increase in stamina and ability to sustain running pace for progressively longer distances. It is no exaggeration to say that anyone with a reasonable degree of existing fitness could soon work their way up to runs of 5k or 10k distance in as little as ten weeks.

“I’m good with color”, you tell your friends, and you truly believe that in another life, you could have been an excellent interior designer. Then how did it happen that your living room just looks... off? Even those of us with the keenest eyes and the best style sense can fall victim to decorating blunders. Sometimes experiencing the feel of a room in person is quite different to the visions you gleaned from home magazines and your Pinterest board. Here are some of the most common style mistakes people unwittingly make when decorating their homes.

Are You Making Any of These Common Decorating Mistakes?

Getting Sizes Wrong

Color, texture and style are always punted as the most important characteristics of a new piece of furniture, but if it doesn’t match the scale of your room, the effect is going to be awkward. Area rugs shouldn’t be more than a foot or two from the wall, light fittings shouldn’t dominate the ceiling they hang from and you’ll only go

crazy trying to have a dinner party where the chair backs keep knocking against the wall. First and foremost, furniture needs to strike a good balance in the

room. Not only should furniture fit harmoniously with the rest of the space, it should be similarly scaled with the other pieces.

Decorating A Hotel

You may have heard so much advice to go with “neutral” and “classic” that you end up putting together a room that is utterly unmemorable. If your room starts to look too generic, it may be time to insert a bold, attention grabbing element.

Shake things up by

throwing together

contrasting elements,

and don’t be afraid of

injecting a little of your

own quirk into the mix.

Playing with color, fun textures or sentimental items can give a dull room a bit of personality. Shake things up by throwing together contrasting elements, and don’t be afraid of injecting a little of your own quirk into the mix.

One Dimensional Decorating

If all of your furniture is pushed up against the wall, you may need to work on a more balanced arrangement. Think about the flow of traffic and how you tend to move about in the space, then arrange items accordingly. Another mistake to avoid is having everything in the room at more or less one height – try to add interest with furniture of different heights, different sized pictures or tall lamps to balance out shorter furniture items.

Forgetting About Lighting

There’s a reason that many professional decorators think of the lighting in a space before they think of anything else. The quality of the light in an area can make or break the mood, no matter how well arranged everything else is. Good lighting should respect the natural light that already comes into the room and find a way to work with it. Don’t think of lighting as an afterthought — actively

incorporate lamps, ceiling fittings and even candles into the whole flow of the room. Also spare a thought to how this lighting will fall on and enhance the room’s key features.

Accumulating Clutter

There’s no greater sign that you need better storage than little mounds of clutter forming all over the room. Even the most thoughtfully decorated interior loses its charm under mounds of books, trinkets, bits and pieces. Decide on a few elegant, high impact pieces and put away other knick knacks. A pretty armoire or shelves with repurposed baskets can hide your junk while tying the rest of the room together.

Of course, the only “mistake” you can make with decorating is to keep living in a space that leaves you feeling uninspired and uncomfortable. Make sure that your unique style and personality have the opportunity to really come through by giving some thought to these design basics before you dive in.

Page 20: FACE Magazine / April 2015

Creative Ways

There are a couple of ways to approach landscape design. If your budget allows, hire a landscape architect to give your yard a five star wow factor. If doing the work yourself, try

incorporating a few of the concepts professionals use.

Most suburban back yards are fairly small which means space is limited. Start by defining your greatest needs or desires so you can factor them into your design. Do you want to include a pool or pond? Do you want a space for barbequing and dining? Do you want a private seating area? Is it important to have a vegetable garden? Would you like to care for perennial flowers or would you prefer low maintenance plants? Is more shade or privacy needed? Is it important to preserve a section of lawn for playing ball?

Create Rooms

To install your wish list while giving your yard the illusion of space, divide it into “rooms”. Incorporate separating “walls” and adjoining paths. Short “walls” might be created with plant materials, retaining walls or raised garden beds that are constructed from concrete, stone, or brick. Walking paths created with interesting flooring materials can also be useful room demarcations.

Plan Your Plantings

Placing the right sized plants is imperative for a small garden if it’s to retain its manicured look over time. Always consider the predicted full grown height and spread of plants before adding them. Add only as much as you’re willing to maintain. It’s all too easy for an over-planted small garden to become overcrowded. Choose dwarf or miniature plant species and attractive grasses to delicately enhance each room.

Add Fun and Functional Focal Points

A focal point in an indoor room is that large piece of architecture, furniture, picture, or other item that captivates a person’s attention when he first enters a room. In a well designed room, all other furniture and features centre around and play off the focal point. Use the same train of thought for your outdoor rooms.

Focal points in garden rooms can range from a large outdoor fireplace to a favorite tree. You might want to add a water feature, a garden statue, a whimsical art piece, or create an inviting seating area. Each focal point, of course, should fit the scale of the room it’s found in. Small scaled focal points placed throughout your garden can become pleasant surprises to the visiting explorer.

A focal point may also serve a dual purpose. A water feature can double as a sound barrier, a bench will provide needed seating, an attractive shed will provide needed storage, a gazebo will provide shade, a single small tree can provide some privacy.

When designing your suburban garden, plan in rooms, plan to scale, and attend to the small details within each room by grooming every corner of it. The result should be a very welcoming garden that serves multiple purposes and becomes a place you want to visit often.

Use whimsy for a fun and functional flower bed.

Birdbaths are traditional and functional..

[1] Bring Living Room Ideas Outside

For drier months when you can be outdoors, complement your patio with items that can bring the comforts of your home to the outdoors. Comfortable furniture with throw pillows can be incorporated and bring a cozy feel to your patio. Get a sturdy tablecloth for your outdoor table to define a dining area. Lanterns and candles can finish your look and bring a warm feel to your patio. Having table space and a bar area will bring to life your patio and make this the spot to entertain and sit with guests.

[2] Borrow From Those Who Have Mastered Outdoor Space

Look through travel blogs to find outdoor plazas and parks that have a great outdoor look. If you can bring the flavor of an Italian piazza or Mexican cantina to your patio, it will be fun and inviting for guests and friends. Themes can change from season to season depending on the look you are hoping to achieve, or for a specific party theme.

[3] Have Your Patio do Double Duty as a Kitchen

Everyone seems to congregate to the kitchen during parties. That is where snacks and drinks can be grabbed up while being part of everything going on and food prep. To decrease the back and forth and keep everyone outside, bring the usual kitchen prep work to the patio.  Start with an outdoor drink station, a side table for snacks, and a usable BBQ so that food prep and refreshments are at everyone’s fingertips.

[4] Maximize Flow From the Indoors to the Patio

If folks will be running back and forth from inside to outside, having a lousy flow can make your

patio not as accessible as you would like. French doors can open up a space and have a nice walkway from home to patio. If there are stairs leading to your outdoor space, make sure these are skid proof and have a sturdy railing. If you have to screen in pets, you may want to consider relegating them to another part of the home so you don’t have to worry during parties.

[5] Entertaining in all Weather

Awnings and heat lamps can make your patio entertaining year round a possibility. You can never fully predict the weather, so if a chill or some sprinkles threaten your outdoor event, be prepared. Pulling out roll out awnings or patio umbrellas can protect guests from rain, while warming up to heat lamps or fire pits will keep everyone warm and content.

Bringing your patio to life as an entertainment spot can be easy and inexpensive. Maximize the size of your home and make entertaining easier and more spacious. Your patio doesn’t need to be a dead zone –  work with what you have and upgrade your patio to make your next dinner or party a success.

FIVE SIMPLE WAYS to Upgrade Your Patio Space for Entertaining

It is easier than you think to spruce up your patio space for entertaining and dining. With the right décor and creative use of space, you can transform your patio into a fully functioning living

area. Patios can quickly be incorporated as a useful part of your home and everyday living. Here are five ways to maximize space and increase comfort on your patio for entertaining.

It’s only natural. As we age, our facial skin loses volume and becomes less elastic. Lifestyle, sun exposure and heredity can also contribute to the problem.

Modern science, however, has created many revolutionary dermal fillers that are highly effective and long lasting. Properly used, they plump up those areas of the face that need some attention, but not a surgical solution just yet.

Dermal fillers can be an effective way to: • enhance the lips • soften small creases and wrinkles • plump up the appearance of recessed scars • improve shallow contours and laugh lines

Non-surgical rejuvenation is best under the supervision of a physician trained in the musculature and structure of the face. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Jason Durel, a board-certified otolaryngologist, to discuss the best solutions for you – 237-0650.

It’s Courage — Not Cash You NeedMany of those questioned in the survey placed the blame firmly on lack of finances for thwarting their dreams and aspirations. Yet this is only half the story. When pressed further, it became apparent that deep down it was a lack of courage that prevented many people from achieving the things they had always yearned for. If you’re hoping for a big win on the lottery before you embark on travelling the world, then let’s face it, you could be waiting a very long time! Your time is now. Pluck up the courage to face your fears and don’t allow a lack of money restrict you. Be resourceful and find a way.

So you want to see the world but can’t even afford a bus ticket? Have you thought about volunteering overseas and using your existing skills to secure a place with an orphanage or a wildlife preserve? You won’t get paid a full wage, but very often flights, accommodation and food are provided. It’s a small start but it could transform your life.

In a recent study of 2000 participants, researchers discovered that we spend over two hours a week reproaching ourselves for some of the life choices we had opted for. However,

perhaps we should change our mode of thinking and see regrets in a more constructive light. They can often be the positive spur that prompts us to make those long awaited changes to our

lives. This five-point plan may just give you the impetus you need to ditch those niggling worries once and for all – and really start living the life you deserve.

Page 32: FACE Magazine / April 2015

People are understandably very nervous about confronting their fears and doubts. Yet examining what holds us back can often be a truly liberating experience in itself. Buy yourself a notebook and write down whatever comes to mind. Your thoughts are private. You don’t have to share them with anyone else unless you choose to.

By writing down your worries you may find that you begin to unlock the reasons as to why you are not achieving your full potential. It’s not easy and it does take courage. However, it could also be the start of an amazing journey for you. The therapeutic process of keeping a journal may finally enable you to unlock what is really holding you back and give you much-needed clarity.

Keep a Journal

Creating your own personal plan is a great way to start tackling any issues or concerns you may want to change. The problem with many people is that they set themselves unrealistic goals from the outset and then find all their good intentions gradually fall by the wayside! Start with very small steps.

So you want to change your career? Begin by thoroughly researching what it is you need to do to make the leap. Find a mentor – someone who will give you genuine advice and support. Above all, don’t give up! If you truly want something, you’ll work hard to make it happen. Start thinking outside the box and find creative ways to solve any obstacles you come up against. Keep persevering and you may find those doors you thought were locked suddenly opening up for you.

Make a Plan and Stick to it

If you find a relationship has run its course because of your own personal desire for change, then be prepared to let it go.

Many participants on the survey cited lack of enthusiasm and encouragement from their partners, friends and loved ones as being a major factor as to why they felt unable to make the necessary changes in their lives. While it’s true that others can often appear to be negative because they don’t want us to be disappointed or disillusioned if an endeavour doesn’t come to fruition, other issues can also come into play here. Often jealousy, resentment and a fear of being left behind can be the real reasons as to why a partner or friend is less than enthusiastic about your new venture.

Toxic relationships are stressful and debilitating. They can also destroy any hope we have of moving forward. It’s vital that you surround yourself with people who genuinely have your best interests at heart. Positive, supportive folk can have an amazing effect on our own self confidence and belief in our abilities. They can also provide solutions to challenges we may have thought were impossible to overcome. Be selective about who your share your dreams and aspirations with. If you find a relationship has run its course because of your own personal desire for change, then be prepared to let it go. Always remember – for transformation to occur we must be brave enough to relinquish the old for the new.

Any kind of change can be daunting and very often we can feel we are taking two steps back instead of two steps forward. Yet any progress, however slow, is still growth and advancement. You have done something quite remarkable by taking the first tentative steps towards transformation in the first place. So what if things don’t go quite according to plan? Relax and take some time out to evaluate what you need to do to get back on track. It’s important that you nurture yourself whilst going through this new chapter in your life. Eat well, get a good night’s sleep and, above all, remind yourself that your hopes and dreams are still worth striving for.

Be Kind to Yourself

Regrets can stagnate and immobilise us if we let them, but if we are bold and daring we can turn regrets into wonderful opportunities and amazing life changing experiences. Don’t let your fears prevent you from living the life you truly deserve. Remember – you only get one crack at the whip. So what are you waiting for? Make that leap!

The Mentoring of

ANNE FALGOUTBy Nicole LaCour | Photography by Penny Moore of Moore Photography

Page 37: FACE Magazine / April 2015
Page 38: FACE Magazine / April 2015

Anne shows an incoming text to her 16 year old daughter, Emma.

“No, Mom,’ the teenager assesses. “Life is too short for stupid boys

and bad coffee.” Anne laughs as she heeds her advice.

Emma entered Anne’s life as she was beginning her senior year

in high school. So it’s not surprising that they are just as much

girlfriends as they are parent and child. “She’s my best friend. I

might not be her best friend. That would skew the order of the

universe.” Emma was not the first nor the last person to enter

Anne’s life and change it forever.

Mother of three, economic developer, community activist and

part time food blogger (and single), Anne Falgout was born with

ambition. But the secret to her success is her ability to recognize

the value of the people around her; to build on the experiences

and influence of smart, talented people and allow their gifts to

nurture and encourage her own. She is the product of drive,

discipline and intelligence married with a love of learning and an

openness to the wisdom of others.

Always driven, the A-student, the student counsel member,

the cheerleader, popular friend and board member, Anne is

disarmingly unassuming. At 33 she’s achieved more than many

will in their lives, yet it’s the words of those who urged her on that

she speaks of most:

“You want to be a librarian? You have to come work for me,” Erik

Reutling, Lafayette Economic Development Authority’s (LEDA)

research director told Anne when her internship was up.

“We’re going to meet regularly and talk. I see something in you

that is not being realized.” Flo Meadows, Anne’s personal mentor

instructed her.

“You think you could write your blog for us once a week?”

the Daily Advertiser asked her when her monthly food blog

became popular.

“So we’ve made a pro and con list and we’ve decided you need to

take the job,” Anne’s friends informed her as she contemplated

leaving LEDA after 13 years to return to her hometown to work

for the Vermilion Parish Economic Development District.

“You’re not getting an A in my class,” David Thibodaux told

Anne, despite the fact that she had impressed him with 16

handwritten pages of analysis during English 115’s final exam.

Page 39: FACE Magazine / April 2015

faceacadiana.com | FACE 39

Anne had entered the freshman class thinking, “I’m smart. I got

this.” Mr. Thibodaux showed her otherwise. “I realized that I

had so much to learn and these people were brilliant. It was a

humbling experience. I took the bull by the horns and made

school my job. I fell in love with the program and immersed

myself in literature.”

Economic development was not the logical career path for an

English Lit major but what Anne loved about the academics of

literature served her perfectly at LEDA. “I like analyzing things

and writing about it; looking at it from all perspectives and

breaking down information. I have a knack for taking things that

are foreign to people and once I get it, then I can explain it.” And

that’s exactly what she did at LEDA.

She started as an intern when a friend, Tricia Gaspard Duhon, one

of many guardian angels Anne seems to attract, told her about

LEDA. “You should give it a try. It will look great on a résumé.”

A senior at ULL, she had her sights on being a librarian until Erik

Reutling convinced her to work at LEDA’s research department.

“I sunk my teeth into helping businesses grow. Through research

I showed people how to capitalize on their strengths, what their

niche might be and who their competition was. I did statistics all

day.” Her boss Gregg Gothreaux became one of her mentors as

he gave her increasingly challenging responsibilities. Soon she was

involved in manufacturing certification training, staff training,

client satisfaction and budgeting. Anne grew adept at working

both behind the scenes inside the structure of the organization

and at the front end, working directly with businesses and clients.

She was able to see full circle the process that LEDA provided to

local businesses and entrepreneurs.

At LEDA Anne discovered the secret to having time for creativity

and innovation. “We were so uptight, it set us free.” With her

team, Anne learned that routine, discipline and a methodical

management system resulted in so much efficiency that they were

left with the freedom to do more, to stretch and expand what they

thought was possible. When three major tech companies were

looking at Lafayette, Anne and her team devised creative ways to

sell Lafayette and Acadiana. “We had a motto, ‘If we can get them

here, we got them here.’ We hit a groove and we put together

packages that told our story in ways we hadn’t thought of before;

our public assets, the Lite Center, our fiber optic network, ULL

and most of all, our human capital and unique culture.”

Page 40: FACE Magazine / April 2015

FOR THE LOVE OF FOODAnd She Has a Food Blog, Too!

Despite Anne’s seemingly impossible

schedule she writes a weekly food

column for The Daily Advertiser. Ever

the A-student, when Anne decided to

cook, she didn’t just tinker, she became

obsessed; a food junkie, watching every

cooking show, learning to chop properly

at the expense of her fingers at times

and spending time in her favorite

restaurants’ kitchens.

Like many French-Cajun families, Anne

grew up with home cooking. Her mother

got up at 5am every morning to get a

jump start on lunch before going to work.

She ate at home every day and had a

meal on the table for Anne and her five

siblings every evening. But Anne didn’t

pick up her mom’s skills until later.

It was a folklore class with John Laudun

that sparked her interest in food. “We’re

going to explore folklore through food,”

she remembered him saying, “Take

a recipe you love and find out how it

started in your family.” So, Anne went to

her mom and said, “I need you to make

me Nanny Min’s chicken and dumplings

and tell me how it came to be.” Of

course, what poured out of Anne’s mom,

Kathie Terpening was more than how to

make dumplings from scratch. Stories

poured out and Anne discovered the

connection between food and family.

When she got married, Anne decided, “I

cannot make grilled chicken breast on

a George Foreman every night. I should

learn to cook.” So she began doing

what her mom and grandmother had

done before her. She moved away from

the little grill and started experimenting.

She discovered she was good at it.

“I have horrible eyesight but a good

sense of smell. My pallet became more

sophisticated and I could go into a

restaurant and taste things and learn the

aromas and flavors in food and replicate

them at home.” Cooking became a way

for her to make food interesting for her

kids and a creative outlet for a woman

who immerses herself with data and

research most of the day.

Then Facebook made her famous.

Well, Lafayette-famous. As she posted

recipes and pictures and stories from her

family’s cooking escapades, a following

grew. One day Ashley Berthelot with

L magazine asked her if she would

be up for a feature about her growing

Facebook following. That turned into a

monthly blog for The Daily Advertiser,

which turned into a monthly column,

which turned into a weekly column,

Chef Anne Specials. She continues the

column today, often writing her recipes

on her lunch break. Her tales of fish

tacos, mini quiches and black-eyed peas

are offered with anecdotes about life as

Anne Falgout.

“Helping people is my passion but the

best way I can show somebody I care

about them is cooking. It’s a tool for that

and I love it.”

Page 41: FACE Magazine / April 2015

Mother of three, economic developer,

community activist and part time

food blogger (and single), Anne

Falgout was born with ambition.

But the secret to her success is her

ability to recognize the value of the

people around her; to build on the

experiences and influence of smart,

talented people and allow their gifts

to nurture and encourage her own.

Thriving in a demanding job wasn’t quite enough for Anne. “I felt

like I was becoming my job. I was forgetting the ‘If you can, do’

motto I was raised with.” She craved a more direct involvement in

the community. Then another guardian angel stepped in. Carlee

Alm-Labar was leaving the 705 board. “I don’t feel comfortable

leaving my post unless you take it over,” she told Anne. “When

Carlee tells you to do something, you do it,” is Anne’s mantra.

She fell in love with the 705, a group of young professionals

dedicated to community engagement and leadership. “It was like an

adult honor’s society. These were my people,” Anne said. Growing

up, Anne always wanted to be someone who made others look good,

a behind-the-scenes influence. With the 705 she discovered a new

idea. “Here was an organization that taught young professionals that

they could be the ones that look good. That they could strive with

the right amount of personal and professional development and

civic engagement, they could be the person who made the decisions.

I don’t know why I never felt that was possible before. But I heard

it loud and clear and I wanted to be a part of that movement, that

voice.” Anne moved from communications, to philanthropy

and programming until she was elected president-elect and is

now the president of the 705, one of many civic and community

organizations Anne participates in.

As a young, involved professional, Anne is inspired by the

initiative she sees in others. “The people of Lafayette are not

resting. They are not complacent about their community. They

are dedicated to making it ever better. It’s not enough to go

out and bring people to make change happen. We need to take

responsibility. We need to do it. I see that happening throughout

the city and parish. We’re not waiting for someone to come and

save us. We know we can do it ourselves.”

A full time job, three children, board meetings, socials, events,

planning sessions… When does she sleep? “My body only allows

me to sleep six hours a day,” she explained. “I go to bed around

midnight and wake up at six to start the ritual of getting the three

kids up for school.” Emma makes her coffee while she makes

Page 42: FACE Magazine / April 2015

Emma’s lunch and they catch up on the latest news from the world

of high school. Then Lola is next and she gets one-on-one time

with mom. Jack is the last one to get up and once he’s settled,

Anne begins her ritual of “going through 20 potential outfits to

wear and lunch preparation.” Then she and Jack watch funny

videos of a friend’s new baby while they wait at the bus stop.

Then Anne is off to her

new job at the renamed,

Vermilion Parish

Development Alliance or

The Alliance. It was hard

for her to leave LEDA

but even Gregg knew she

needed to do more. LEDA

was about objective data. At

The Alliance Anne is taking

a more intimate approach

as she learns about local

businesses and what

their needs are. A true homecoming for the Vermilion Catholic

graduate, her new position will allow her to move beyond research

and serve as a conduit for intelligent growth in Vermilion Parish.

Anne has hit the ground running with logo design, a new website

and a list of potential services, building the organization from the

ground up. Her challenge is to show the community that The

Alliance is not just a public entity but an advocate for business and

tourism as well. “We have some interesting traditions and great

home grown companies here. It’s about learning what is so special

about Vermilion Parish. I have to figure out what people need,

want, love and hate. I have to do it the only way I know how by

entrenching myself in the community, participating and going

out there and talking to people. This is a more intimate endeavor.

It has to be.”

As luck would have it, Anne’s new job allows her to work with

one of her oldest friends, Leah Richard who is working for the

Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Commission. “I don’t

remember a time when we didn’t know each other,” Leah said.

“Of all the friends I had, Anne was the one with the most

potential. She’s goofy and funny and sweet but she’s also brilliant,

one of the smartest people I know.”

In a world where leadership is often confused with ego, arrogance

or independence, Anne Falgout has found the secret to true

With her team, Anne learned

that routine, discipline and a

methodical management system

resulted in so much efficiency that

they were left with the freedom

to do more, to stretch and expand

leadership, though she might be the last

person to admit it. This is the girl who

announced to her teachers as she began her

senior year of high school, “OK, so Friday

I’m having a baby but I’ll be back as soon as

I can. I’m a quick learner, so it’s going to be

ok.” Her energy and drive are apparent. But

her true leadership comes from the value she

places in others. Try to have a conversation

with Anne about her achievements and you

won’t be able to keep up with the list of

mentors, friends and influences she credits.

Ask any one of them and they will tell you

that Anne is the real mentor. “She’s an

inspirational influencer,” Flo Meadows said,

“a trust building team player with infectious

and joyous energy.”

“She could lead without the fear of failure,”

Zach Barker, past president of the 705 said.

“That’s what I tell others, ‘Find a place you

can fail,’” Anne said. “Find a place where you

have a voice, where you’re empowered to take

a stand and do good things.”

Anne has done just that and at 33, she’s just

getting started.

You’re beginning to see your child’s personality. Research is pretty conclusive that children are born with individual temperaments. Often, a child’s temperament and a parent’s temperament don’t match. It is important to be aware of the differences. You are the adult who is mature enough to make adjustments. You make adjustments to accommodate for different personalities with your work and family so make adjustments with your toddler in similar ways. Be responsive to her feelings. It’s important to step in before her feelings are uncontrollable. Offer words of encouragement and a little assistance when necessary. Some children are easily diverted. Others are persistent. Choices work better than

commands and demands in teaching your child self regulation. Play together often. He is not able to share and take turns yet. He can play near other children, but not cooperatively. Your toddler needs someone to play games with who will let him take the lead. You will be like an assistant: tasting the tea, rocking the baby, adding blocks to the tower. Talk about what you do together so he will know that you are present with her and learn from your use of problem solving. Your toddler will want to exert more and more independence. He wants to do things on his own, but may not have the ability. Try to offer only as much help as needed. A little struggle is necessary for learning new skills. By doing things independently, your infant learns to enjoy the rewards of his efforts. What’s up baby? Empowerment!

STEP 1

EVALUATE RELATIONSHIPS with your grown siblings and parents. While you have developed your identity from your family members, your relationship

with them may begin identifying who you are as you try to deal with the arguments, bad feelings and stress. You and your siblings have childhood memories, but what you remember might not be what they remember.

STEP 2

LOOK BACK ON EVENTS FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD that might have affected the quality of your relationships with your parents and siblings. Parent-child relationships are affected by events in the family, such as the death of a child. When a parent gives more love or attention to one child, that child’s siblings recognize this and their relationships with their parents and siblings suffer.

STEP 3

MAKE UP YOUR MIND that you do not need the anger and negativity your family members bring to your life. Once you have evaluated the true state of your relationship and its effects on you

emotionally and physically, you might decide that your health is more important. Even if you and your family members do not fight, the state of your relationships might have caused stress or emotional upset in past years. Put that stress and emotional upset into your past, at least until your family is willing to discuss their relationships with you.

STEP 4

MEET WITH YOUR PARENTS AND SIBLINGS if it is safe for you to do so. Respectfully tell them you are stopping all contact with them. If you are tempted to tell them that the toxic relationships you have with them are affecting your health, understand that this will not matter to them. Keep your message simple and direct as you tell them why you are cutting off contact.

STEP 5

DEVELOP NEW, POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS with other friends. Post breakup with your siblings and parents, you will need to establish a healthy balance between work, recreation and new relationships. Start participating in enjoyable activities with your friends, focusing on having fun as you get to know them.

REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU

HAVE COME TO TERMS WITH YOUR

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS OR NOT,

THE NEGATIVITY MIGHT HAVE BAD

EFFECTS ON YOUR HEALTH.

FAMILY MATTERS

End Toxic Relationships Within Your Family

Your relationship with your parents and grown siblings might

be so bad that your only option is to sever all ties, at least until

everyone concerned expresses a willingness to talk about the

relationship dynamics. Regardless of whether you have come

to terms with your family relationships or not, the negativity

might have bad effects on your health. Once you have decided

that you will not be able to repair your relationships with your

family, it is time to break those ties.

7 Signs of

A Perfect

Husband

At some time in her life, a woman knows when she has met “the one,” or

the one that meets a majority of the criteria on her checklist. A perfect man

is hard to find, so how does a woman know if she has chosen a perfect

lifelong partner?

PROTECTS HIS ASSETS

He treats his wife like she is the only woman in the world, and has a genuine concern for her safety and well being. He stands up for her in all circumstances, and puts her first, even before his family.

7 Signs of

A Perfect

Husband

BROADCASTS HE’S HAPPILY MARRIED

The love he has for his wife is limitless, and there is no doubt, or shame about the way he feels. A perfect husband displays affection for his wife around his family, friends, coworkers, and even ex-girlfriends. Whether alone, or in front of a crowd, a perfect husband says what he means to his wife, and means what he says.

SHARES EVERYTHING

He will give his wife the shirt off of his back, the last piece of food on his plate, or the last dollar in his bank account. He does whatever it takes to make his wife happy, because that is what gives him satisfaction.

APPRECIATES THE LITTLE THINGS

It doesn’t matter if his wife has her own career path, or works at home. He recognizes her efforts, and compliments her frequently on her ability to multitask. A perfect husband encourages his wife to have her own dreams, and supports her on her journey. He realizes that their relationship doesn’t revolve around his priorities.

HELPS AROUND THE HOUSE

He doesn’t wait for his wife to delegate chores. He notices what needs to be done, and contributes with a positive attitude. He takes his time performing quality work at home, and provides service with a smile.

CAN’T WAIT TO GET HOME FROM WORK

He doesn’t sit in the car when he arrives, wishing that he was somewhere else, or with someone else. He looks forward to creating intimate moments with his wife, as well as her companionship when he walks through the front door.

SURPRISES HIS WIFE

He leaves thoughtful notes on the refrigerator for his wife, or gives her a token of his appreciation when she least expects it. He even gives her a spontaneous massage when she has a stressful day.

Treat Your Beau To A Love Note (In His Language)

• Make his thing your thing

• Let him talk — and listen

• Have him teach you something

• Add a tall boy to your grocery list

• Ask his advice

LOVE

Let him talk — and listen

There are a hundred reasons to switch off when your man is talking. You’ve heard this story before, your phone’s buzzing in your pocket, you have a thirty item to-do list running through your head... But feeling loved means feeling valued, and nothing says “I value you” more than listening intently when your guy has something to share with you. Look him in the eye, follow what he’s saying, and ask him questions if you need clarification. Your relationship will be energized as you take the time to really connect.

Ever had a conversation with your beau that’s gone something like this? You: “I love you.” Him: “I love you too”. You: “No, like I really love you!” Sometimes words just don’t feel like enough. Before you dash out to buy a mushy card and some heart shaped candy, consider these five ways to show him how you really feel – in his language.

Make his thing your thing

Having separate interests is part of a healthy relationship, but straying occasionally into your guy’s world can be a powerful way to show him what he means to you. Maybe you’re an early riser and he’s a night owl – ditch the morning routine and stay up late with him for a change. If he’s an avid sports fan, accompany him to a game (and go the whole hog with face paint and a banner!) Get into his favorite band, try out that bar he loves, or read his number one book.

Have him teach you something

Maybe you’ve never considered learning guitar, leveling up on Super Mario or changing your own oil. Now’s the time! Pick a skill you admire in your man and ask him to teach you. Choosing to learn from your beau will diffuse any unhealthy competition in your relationship and remind him you recognize and appreciate his talents. Plus, you might just come away with a new shared interest.

Add a tall boy to your grocery list

You’re on grocery duty and you have a clear mission. Get in. Fill your cart with things that are quick, healthy, cheap. Get out. Believe it or not, this is the perfect opportunity to show your man some lovin’. Throw in something you don’t normally have in stock but you know he

digs. Surprise him with a bag of those spicy sweet chili chips or a can of that locally brewed beer. He’ll know you were thinking of him without you saying a word.

Ask his advice

Advice sharing is a natural part of friendship but it’s easy to neglect in intimate relationships. Getting your guy’s input shows you value his opinions and recognize that you two are a team. It can be as simple as getting his take on a situation at work or asking which shoes he’d pick

for a night on the town. Show him his ideas matter to you and you’ll show him he matters to you.

1) Use a wide belt to make baggy clothes sexy

Shapeless clothes can be turned into form fitting outfits if you use a wide belt to define your waist. This trick works very well with loose shirts, flared dressed and tunics, and you can use brightly colored belts to make your look more exciting.

2) Find the perfect shoes

Once you find a pair of shoes that are gorgeous but flat, you will be set for life. A pretty pair of practical shoes will allow you to walk for miles and dance until you are exhausted, but they won’t compromise the femininity or elegance of your look. They can turn an old pair of jeans into a cute looking outfit but they can also be paired with a smart dress at a wedding. Ideal examples include shiny black pumps, but if you favor a quirkier look then you may find that ankle boots can play a similar role.

3) Shop for beautiful necklaces

If you add a range of eye catching necklaces and pendants to your jewelry box, you can use them to make a dress look entirely different from one day to the next. For example, a classy necklace with a single stone will help you turn a black dress into a professional outfit for work, while a chunky string of bright beads can give the same outfit a more relaxed look when you’re going to a casual event.

If you have a large and versatile collection of accessories, you can

save a lot of money on clothes. The right piece of jewelry can make a

casual outfit look ideal for a job interview, while a flowing scarf can

instantly update a plain shirt if you’re looking for something to wear

on a date. Here are five smart and easy ways to create a new outfit

using only accessories.

4) Build a collection of scarves

A bright blue scarf can make a black or white outfit look bright and cheerful, and any silk scarf will instantly give you a classy appearance. Once you have a wide range of different colors, patterns and textures at your disposal, it will be easy to transform a tired piece of clothing into something that looks entirely new.

5) Use bold earrings

While big earrings don’t work for every outfit, they can make any outfit look more interesting by adding a splash of color. You can also combine bold earrings with a flattering hairstyle that shows off your neck and shoulders, and this change will rejuvenate your entire look. If you have a large and versatile collection of accessories, you can save a lot of money on clothes. The right piece of jewelry can make a casual outfit look ideal for a job interview, while a flowing scarf can instantly update a plain shirt if you’re looking for something to wear on a date. Homemade honey facial cleansers are easy to make and

use. Try one of these three delightful recipes to gently

cleanse your face, open up pores, and freshen your skin.

Many store-produced facial cleansers use some variation of a recipe that involves honey in them. Honey contains gluconic, a mild alpha hydroxyl acid. Gluconic acid loosens dead skin cells so honey can be used as an exfoliant. Moreover, honey stimulates new skin cell growth, encouraging a glowing look to your skin after you use the honey facial cleanser. Honey also helps to keep moisture in the skin where it belongs, making honey facial cleansers the perfect solution for cleansing dry-condition or damaged skin. Honey’s moisturizing effect is partly due to the fact that it contains amino acids, substances that aid the skin in retaining its natural moisture.

Homemade Beauty Products 101[Homemade Honey Facial Cleanser Recipes]

RECIPE 1

Homemade Honey & Egg Facial Cleanser

You only need two ingredients – honey and egg white. Start with a medium sized bowl. Pour in approximately 1/3 cup of honey. Next, separate the yolks and whites of two fresh eggs. Add the two whites to the honey in the bowl and mix well.

Gently apply the homemade honey & egg facial cleanser to the face and allow it to remain on for approximately 10 minutes. During this time, you will begin to feel your face tingling and the skin becoming tighter. This is normal and this process will help to tone your facial skin.

Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water to remove all of the facial from your skin. If you have experienced sunburn or any other skin condition recently, rinse this particular facial off after 5 minutes instead of waiting the full 10.

Homemade Honey & Milk Facial Cleanser

The homemade honey & milk facial cleanser is a creamy mix that feels cool as it goes on. It is gentle to the skin so it is perfect for those women whose faces show signs of dryness, wind burn, or sunburn. Since both honey and milk are nourishing, this is the perfect facial cleanser for women who wish to moisturize or rejuvenate their facial skin. Both of these ingredients are thought to calm irritated skin.

Only two ingredients are needed for this recipe – milk and honey. Take a small bowl and pour in slightly more than 1/3 cup of honey. Add in slightly less than 1/3 cup of milk. Blend these two ingredients together well. Apply the mixture to the face and allow it to remain on approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse your face gently with warm water to remove all residue.

Homemade Honey & Oats Facial Cleanser

This particular homemade facial cleanser is designed to give a nice glow for the skin after using it. It is simple to make and you probably even have most of the ingredients right at home.

Take a small bowl and mix together equal parts of honey and oats (about 1/3 cup of each.) Stir these ingredients together until they are well blended. Next, add in additional oats if the mixture does not form a paste. Now add in approximately 1/3 cup of yogurt and 1/5 cup of finely ground almonds. Mix well. Add in more finely ground almonds if the mixture stops being a paste.

Dampen your face with warm water and gently apply the homemade honey & oats facial cleanser evenly. Allow the mixture to remain on your face to do its magic for at least 10 minutes. Gently rinse your face with warm water to remove all trace of the facial mixture.

How to Dress Rich Without Going BrokeWouldn’t it be nice if you could dress rich even if you have a limited clothing budget? Fortunately, by following a

few simple wardrobe strategies you can have a wardrobe that looks like a million dollars for much less. Here are

some basics on how to dress rich without spending a fortune.

Choose monochromatic color schemes

Monochromatic colors always look classy and elegant. Plus, solid colors tend to subtract pounds from your frame, making you look slimmer. An added bonus is that you’re less likely to get tired of solid colored clothing as opposed to prints. If you want to dress up your monochromatic outfits, try adding some interesting jewelry.

Wear dark colors

Have you ever noticed how many wealthy people who can afford to dress rich wear black and navy blue? These colors tend to look appropriate for almost any occasion and they can add a certain level of refinement to your wardrobe.

Go for the classics

Don’t jump on board to every trend that comes along. People who dress rich often wear updated classic fashion items as opposed to the latest fad. If you want to update a look, try adding a scarf, interesting belt, or a piece of jewelry instead of rushing out to buy the latest hot fashion trend.

Invest in an expensive purse

There’s no need to have a closet full of purses. Invest in one quality designer purse in black and carry it everywhere you go. If you choose a purse made of the highest quality material by a good designer, it can last for many seasons and will never go out of style.

Buy quality items from off-price sources

The value of a particular clothing item lies in how long it lasts and how many times you’re able to wear it — so don’t skimp on quality if you want to dress rich. Always choose a high quality fabric and a well made garment. If you can’t afford to buy the best quality, check out some off-price sources for high quality clothing including consignment shops, designer outlet stores and even your local Goodwill store. Goodwill stores often carry high end designer names at ridiculously low prices. It may take some searching, but you’ll often be rewarded with elegant items at great prices.

Buy quality items off season

If you wait to purchase clothing at the end of a season, you can get some incredible bargains on quality designer clothing at your local department stores and even high end boutiques. Again, choose classic styles that will never go out of style.
