A Message from the Facades+ Partners

Welcome to Facades+ Chicago! Launched by The Architect’s Newspaper in New York City in 2012, Facades+ is the premier event series on facade design and fabrication. We are thrilled to be back in Chicago for another round of dialogue on high-performance building envelopes and to celebrate the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial. To those of you who are attend-ing a Facades+ gathering for the first time, we extend an especially warm thank-you for joining us. As veteran attendees know, the next two days will be chock full of opportunities to explore in depth some of the most pressing issues confronting the AEC industry, from the role of facades in shaping our cities to the digital revolution in design and construction.

Since the late-nineteenth century, Chicago has defined the cutting edge of American architecture, engineering, and construction. From the earliest experiments in skyscraper construction through the birth of the International Style and the more recent erection of landmarks including Millennium Park and Aqua Tower, Chicago’s robust community of designers, builders, and academics has helped determine the future of the nation’s built environment.

Facades+ taps into this community by engaging them as presenters in to-day’s Symposium and tomorrow’s Dialog and Tech/Lab Workshops.

Our co-chair, SOM’s Dan O’Riley, has worked hard with A|N to put together an incredible roster of presenters from the AEC industry spectrum as well as academia. We hope that you will take the time to interact with them, as well as with our industry-leading sponsors, without whom this conference would not be possible. JOHN RONAN | JOHN RONAN ARCHITECTS | FOUNDING PRINCIPALRonan is known for his abstract yet sensuous work which explores materiality and atmosphere. In 2000, he was named a member of the Design Vanguard by

Architectural Record magazine, and in 2005 he was selected for The Architectural League of New York’s Emerging Voices program. His work has been included in numerous publications on design and covered extensively by the international design press. A monograph on his work, entitled Explorations, was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2010. His firm has been the recipient of two AIA Institute National Honor Awards. Ronan is currently a professor at Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture, where he has taught since 1992.

FELICIA DAVIS | PUBLIC BUILDING COMMISSION | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Appointed by Mayor Emanuel in May 2015, Davis oversees construction and renovation projects for the City of Chicago, its sister agencies, and Cook County. PBC’s clients include the Chicago

Park District, Chicago Public Library, Chicago Public Schools, and City Colleges of Chicago, in addition to the Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a public developer, the PBC plans, designs, and builds schools, parks, libraries, and municipal buildings that help to make the communities of Chicago and Cook County better and safer places to live. Davis joined the mayor’s administration in 2011 as first deputy chief of staff and lead public safety policy advisor, leading the City’s Public Safety portfolio and the development of the public safety agenda and policies that reduce violence in Chicago neighborhoods.

ARTHUR DEL MURO | PUBLIC BUILDING COMMISSION | MANAGING ARCHITECTPrior to joining the PBC, Del Muro served as Design Director for Legat Architects and his own practice for 20 years. His experience has enabled him to focus on a range of work: new construction and

renovation projects in the K-12 and higher education, and municipal and commercial markets in the Chicago area. He has extensive experience with program and design management, having overseen a portfolio of work that exceeds $200 million annually. Recently completed projects

SARA BEARDSLEY | ADRIAN SMITH + GORDON GILL ARCHITECTURE | SENIOR ARCHITECTBeardsley has been working on tall and supertall buildings for more than a decade, including many high performance facades. Her past projects have

included work on the FKI Headquarters and Dancing Dragons (both in Seoul, Korea); Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; the proposed Willis Tower Hotel in Chicago; and various competitions and mater-planning projects around the world. Her projects have also included examination of energy issues in mid-century facades such as Willis Tower and the EM Dirksen Courthouse. Sara is a member of CTBUH, the Chicago High-rise Committee, and Chicago Women in Architecture.

LEE BEY | ARCHITECTURE CRITICBey is a Chicago-based writer, lecturer, and critic specializing in architecture, urbanism, and the role politics play in the creation of the built environment. He currently hosts the Architecture 360 podcast on Rivet Radio and has been an on-air architecture

contributor for Fox News Chicago. He also wrote and photographed an architecture blog for public radio station WBEZ from 2009 to 2013. Prior to that, Bey served as architecture critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, deputy chief of staff to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and director of governmental affairs for Skidmore Owings & Merrill’s Chicago office.

CHRIS WILKINSON | WILKINSONEYRE ARCHITECTS | DIRECTORAfter working in several leading architectural firms, Wilkinson set up his own practice and achieved success with two Jubilee line projects. His belief that architecture

bridges art and science has been a fundamental basis for the practice ethos and reinforced in his own drawings, paintings, and writings. Wilkinson bases each design on a rigorous investigation of the brief, exploring new technologies while incorporating an inspired poetic approach into the narrative. This approach gives depth and meaning to the design solutions, and has led to considerable success in several reknowned international and UK competition wins—his contributions have been recognized with an election to the Royal Academy of Arts, an honorary fellowship from the AIA, and honorary doctorates at Westminster University and Oxford Brookes University.

HAUKE JUNGJOHANN | THORNTON TOMASETTI | VICE PRESIDENTJohnson is the ‘New Design’ Practice Leader for SGH and Structural Engineering Division Head for SGH’s Chicago office. He leads teams in the design and rehabilitation of buildings, the design of

structurally and materially complex building enclosures, and the design of non-traditional constructions including structured landscapes, temporary installations, and public art projects. Johnson pushes forward the agenda of design value for clients with an approach that is both cross disciplinary and innovative. His techniques mix traditional hand drawing, three-dimensional digital modeling, and computational design and fabrication to achieve the highest levels of craft in building structures and facades.

NEIL KATZ | SOM | ASSOCIATEKatz uses a “computational design” approach to his work, and has used this methodology in developing simple and complex geometry as a way of analyzing and designing in response to many project goals including sustainability.

Computational design, aspects of which include algorithmic and parametric design as well as building information modeling (BIM), is as much a way of thinking about design as it is using and developing tools for design. Katz has taught at various schools, and is often invited to speak about his work.

PATRICK LOUGHRAN | GOETTSCH PARTNERS | PRINCIPALLoughran is a noted facade expert and the author of two facade books: Falling Glass and Failed Stone. Licensed as both an architect and engineer, he serves in dedicated project roles and

is a key member of the firm’s Enclosures Group, an in-house team of professionals specializing in exterior building envelopes and systems. His recent work includes the Northwestern University Music and Communication School. He has been quoted in The New York Times and served as the “glass expert” on the National Public Radio show Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!

MAGED GUERGUIS | SOM | DESIGNERGuerguis is a design architect with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, an educator, and a researcher with ten years of experience in internationally renowned architectural firms. He has designed and developed a broad range of commercial, retail,

mixed-use, and residential projects, and in 2013 received the SOM Research and Travel Fellowship. His research topic, Soft Boundaries—The Emergence of Material Energies, investigated areas where architectural design and other sciences overlap. Recently, he worked on AMIE, an interdisciplinary research project in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to design and execute an experimental building envelope to be the first 3D printed energy-efficient structure using additive manufacturing. He is currently a professor of practice at the University of Tennessee Knoxville as a part of the Governor’s Chair for Energy and Urbanism design studio.

KELLY HENRY | LAFARGEHOLCIM | ARCHITECTURE PROJECT MANAGERIn her role as Architecture Project Manager, Henry develops and manages architectural projects for the North America Ductal Ultra High Performance Concrete Team. She is a class of

2009 MBA graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology and holds a BS in Microbiology from the University of Florida, as well as a MArch from Georgia Institute of Technology. Following her first two degrees, Henry worked in the Atlanta offices of Perkins+Will Architects, where she collaborated in the building of research laboratories for NIH and the Department of Homeland Defense. While pursuing her MBA, she returned to the College of Architecture at Georgia Tech as an adjunct professor in the topic of Building Information Modeling and Theory.

MATTHEW JOHNSON | SIMPSON GUMPERTZ & HEGER | PRINCIPALJungjohann joined Thornton Tomasetti in 2014 to lead the Facade Engineering practice for the East U.S. region. His expertise includes parametric modeling, form optimization, and digital

EMIR A. PEKDEMIR | BURO HAPPOLD | SENIOR ENERGY ANALYSTPekdemir’s experience on the firm’s Engineering’s Environmental and Computational Analytics team includes dynamic thermal and airflow modeling, daylight and glare analyses,

computational fluid dynamics, and advanced HVAC simulations to provide design solutions to achieve better performance in buildings. His primary expertise is solving intricate building physics for projects with complex facades and their integration with passive and mechanical systems. He is an active member of AIA Chicago, ASHRAE-IL, USGBC-IL, and IBPSA-USA, and currently serves on the Board of Directors at IBPSA-USA Chicago Chapter.

JAMES ROSE | INSTITUTE FOR SMART STRUCTURES | DIRECTORA faculty member of University of Tennessee’s College of Architecture and Design since 2004, Rose is a Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Assistant Professor and is the recipient of numerous awards

for his teaching and built work. Rose’s focus on emerging technologies and design-build education led to the creation of a series of three net-zero building prototypes including the UT entry for the 2011 Solar Decathlon and most recently, the Additive Manufacturing/Integrated Energy project (AMIE). Conceived in collaboration with the Governor’s Chair for Energy and Urbanism Phil Enquist of SOM and researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, AMIE proposes a future where a 3D-printed home and vehicle could be paired in a comprehensive solution for energy production and storage.

CAROL ROSS BARNEY | ROSS BARNEY ARCHITECTS | FOUNDER + DESIGN PRINCIPALResponsible for the design excellence of all projects undertaken by the firm, Ross Barney is dedicated to improving the built environment. Her

work has an international reputation in design of institutional and public buildings and has been published in national and international journals, books, newspapers, and web media. Her building designs have received numerous honors including four Institute Honor Awards from the AIA and over 35 AIA Chicago Design Awards. Ross Barney’s firm has received significant sustainable building awards including two AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project awards and the Evergreen Award from EcoStructure magazine.

DR. HELEN SANDERS | SAGE GLASS | VP TECHNICAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTSanders has 20 years of experience in the glass industry and 16 years of experience in dynamic glass technology and manufacturing. Currently, she is responsible for technical business development

at SAGE Electrochromics, a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain. She generates product awareness through market education, develops strategic relationships and provides technical sales support. She also leads

RALPH MUEHLEISEN | ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY | PRINCIPAL BUILDING SCIENTIST, BUILDING ENERGY DECISION & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH PROGRAM LEADMuehleisen leads research to increase the energy efficiency of the built environment, including

advanced building energy and urban scale modeling, and innovative building envelope diagnostic equipment. He is a licensed professional engineer, a LEED BD+C accredited professional, an INCE Board certified noise control engineer, and a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (MEEA), vice chair of the Chicago Chapter of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) and chair of the ASHRAE subcommittee on Data Driven Modeling.

MARTIN NEUMANN | VIEW | DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENTNeumann is responsible for strategic partnerships between View and partners in building community and technology, as well as product awareness and education. Prior to this

role, Martin was a leader in the technology development and scaling of View’s Dynamic Glass from concept and experimental stage to scaling to a high volume production line. Martin comes from a background in research and higher education instruction. He holds a BS, MS, and PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is a member of and plays an active role in various organizations including USGBC, NAIOP, BOMA, AIA, and IIDA.

DAN O’RILEY | SOM | DIRECTOR OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT | CHICAGO CO-CHAIRO’Riley is a licensed architect with over 14 years of experience and primarily focuses on healthcare projects and facade design. His most recent

projects include facade design for the the Denver VA hospital, the Genome Science Building at UNC, and the Cleveland Clinic in Florida—both their Braathen Center outpatient clinic and their new hospital. With all projects, O’Riley endeavors to design from the inside out, with the program and desired user experience informing the envelope and vice-versa. Prior to working at SOM, O’Riley worked for Rafael Viñoly Architects, on both the Charles M. Harper Center and the Center for Care and Discovery at the University of Chicago.

TRISTAN D’ESTREE STERK | FORMSOLVER & FOUNDER | CEOD’Estree Sterk has been recognized for his work on the production of methods that tie the geometry of a building directly to its performance through form, structure, and

material composition. In particular he has been recognized for work in structural shape change and the role that shape plays in building optimization for low energy design. He has won several awards, including the Kalil Endowment for Smart Design at the Parsons School of the Constructed Environment and the AIA Chicago Young Architect Award. His most recent work in developing software for energy, shape, and material optimization is about to be released in a new software tool called Formsolver.

JOE VALERIO | VALERIO DEWALT TRAIN ASSOCIATES | FOUNDING PARTNERValerio is an award-winning architect recognized for his creativity in project design. A tireless innovator with an enormous capacity for creation, he oversees the design development of all

VDTA’s commissions. Valerio’s portfolio, accumulated over a 40 year career, includes a wide variety of projects including corporate office, high-tech industrial, institutional, retail, healthcare, restaurant, residential, and theater facilities. Over this career, he has authored three books, his work has been the subject of over 150 articles in professional journals, and he has received five National AIA Honor Awards. He is known for his philosophy that design should be based on an exhaustive understanding of the user and the user’s needs. Only by expanding the set of data points used as the basis for a design can we fully exploit the influence that architecture can have.


SAGE’s technical development, learning, and training, and is active in codes and standards development as well. Since joining SAGE in 1999, she has held a number of diverse positions, including leading the company’s operations function including manufacturing, engineering, and solution delivery.

BRYAN SCHABEL | PERKINS + WILL | PRINCIPALSchabel joined Perkins+Will in 1995 and works on a wide variety of education, research, development, corporate, and residential projects. His experience with a broad range of markets, clients, and cultures

allows him to bring a fresh and knowledgeable approach to every new design challenge. Supported by extensive project experience and travel around the globe, Schabel’s work reflects sensitivity to surrounding local cultures and climates. He places emphasis on letting location and environment inform a new design rather than attempting to apply ideas out of context. MATTHEW SHAXTED | PARALLEL.WORKS | CO-FOUNDER AND CHIEF INNOVATION OFFICERShaxted is a civil engineer and an award-winning web user interface expert working at the intersection of parallel computation, design,

and the built environment. As a computational designer at the Chicago office of SOM, he was part of a team of architects, design professionals, and multidisciplinary engineers who develop and integrate advanced computational methods into design processes for architecture and urban areas. He recently left SOM to co-found Parallel.Works, a startup focused on making supercomputing easy and cost effective for the architecture and engineering disciplines.

CRAIG SIEBEN | SIEBEN ENERGY ASSOCIATES | CEOSieben has focused his 30+ year professional career in the area of energy efficiency and energy resource management. In 1990, Sieben started Sieben Energy Associates, a Chicago-based

energy strategy and management services firm. The company helps clients develop and implement enterprise-wide energy strategies designed to optimally manage their facility energy use and cost. Clients include owners and managers of corporate headquarters, school and university facilities, high-rise office and residential buildings, shopping centers, government and manufacturing facilities, health care organizations, and government facilities. His professional career began in Washington, D.C., where he worked for the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy Conservation & Power and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Solar Energy.

FIONA GILLAN | ARUP | ACOUSTIC CONSULTANTGillan has design experience in architectural acoustics and noise control for performing arts, corporate, educational, and civic projects. Her interests include understanding the interactions

between the effects of noise ingress to buildings and the overall perceived benefits of natural ventilation as well as the design of naturally ventilated facades.

NARADA GOLDEN | YR&G | PRINCIPALGolden co-leads the Design and Construction team and Analytics group at YR&G with over 16 years of experience in design and construction, integrative project management, and thought leadership in the field of green building. He has

worked on a wide range of residential, commercial, educational and institutional, cultural, lab, manufacturing, and master plans. Golden has also planned and facilitated interdisciplinary design charrettes and implementation workshops focused on developing ecodistricts, green codes, net-zero energy and water projects, and occupant strategies for healthy engaged living and working. Golden is a Living Building Challenge Ambassador for the International Living Future Institute.

ARATHI GOWDA | SOM | SUSTAINABILITY SPECIALISTGowda is the team leader for SOM Chicago’s elite Performative Design Group, charged with researching new technologies and recommending integrated environmental design

solutions that are substantiated with computer simulation for SOM project teams worldwide. As an educator, Gowda is committed to training the next generation of practitioners engaging with two universities, first as the current elected dean of Sustainable Initiatives at Foundation University and a visiting instructor for their architecture program, the first Design Build program in the Philippines. She is also a part-time professor for the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she currently teaches Architecture Studio as part of the Urban Cloud series for fifth year and graduate students.

SOYOUNG HWANG | WELL BUILDING INSTITUTE | ASSOCIATEHwang’s team is responsible for the development of the WELL Building Standard, including WELL pilot standards in new building sectors, related certification and credentialing

high-quality design standards that have become synonymous with Schuler Shook. His experience in daylighting design and analysis and his knowledge of electric light sources enable him to integrate these sources to their maximum benefit. Baney’s award-winning lighting designs have encompassed a wide range of project types including museums, academic buildings, building facades, city streetscapes, retail, hospitality, houses of worship, transportation facilities, and corporate offices.

RYAN BIZIOREK | ARUP SOUNDLAB | SENIOR ACOUSTIC CONSULTANTBiziorek is an Associate Consultant in the Arup Acoustics team and has been involved in providing technical expertise and project management skills for various building types.

He joined Arup Acoustics in February 2005, after receiving an MSc in Sound & Vibration Studies from the Institute of Sound & Vibration Research at University of Southampton. Biziorek is an active proponent of performance-based design and strives to implement integrated acoustic solutions into the design using innovative tools and techniques.

DEREK CAVATAIO | ARCHITECTURAL TESTING INC. | PROJECT MANAGERCavataio has 8+ years of experience as a building enclosure consulting engineer and commissioning consultant. His work includes commercial, industrial, and residential building

enclosure systems, including wall weather/air/vapor wall systems, claddings, roofing, fenestration, and waterproofing. He has extensive experience in investigations and condition surveys of existing buildings, commissioning, testing, review of design documents, design of new and restoration/repair systems, and construction phase project management for new and existing building enclosure projects. Architectural Testing Inc. is an Intertek company (Intertek-ATI), Building Sciences group located in Chicago.

STEVE FRONEK | WAUSAU WINDOW AND WALL SYSTEMS | VP TECHNICAL SERVICESFronek leads Wausau Window and Wall Systems’ new product development, marketing, technical support, and general research. He was the recipient of the

American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) 2014 Outstanding Member Award, and has served on 60 of AAMA’s committees and task groups, including guiding the evolution of

STEPHEN RAY | SOM | MECHANICAL ENGINEERRay specializes in visualizing sustainability by working closely with designers to weave high performance systems into design, highlighting their sustainability. Before SOM, Steve

commissioned and monitored a midsize office building in Tokyo as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT. His doctoral dissertation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT generated new modeling approaches for natural ventilation after extensive work with existing models and full-scale building experiments.

LISA WHITE | PASSIVE HOUSE INSTITUTE US | CERTIFICATION MANAGERWhite joined the PHIUS Certification team in 2012 and after earning a degree in Environmental Sustainability with a minor in architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

She currently manages the PHIUS+ Certification program. In consultation with PHIUS Senior Scientist Graham Wright, she reviews project designs and energy models to evaluate their qualification for PHIUS+ Certification. White sits on the PHIUS technical committee and assists with building science research, and provides consulting services on static and dynamic energy modeling in WUFI Passive, THERM modeling, and planning specific to passive building principles.

RICHARD BRAUNSTEIN | YKK AP AMERICA | DIRECTOR, PRODUCT DEVELOPMENTFor the past 18 years, Braunstein has blended careers in design and education that has yielded a unique perspective on issues of sustainable design. He currently oversees

YKK AP America’s product development group and is an adjunct professor at Georgia Tech where he developed and now teaches a course on sustainable product design. During this time, Richard has published and lectured on the subject of sustainable design. Braunstein has been recognized for his design contributions by the International Energy Agency (First Place Product Design Award) and Business Week magazine (IDEA Gold Award 2001 and IDEA Silver Award 2009), as well as his contribution in the classroom with an Amoco Foundation Teaching Excellence Award.

NEAL BURNHAM | AUTODESK | SENIOR SQA ENGINEERBurnham’s background is in the development of scripting languages, both control languages for Windows and testing languages for SQA regression testing tools, such as SilkTest.

JOEL PUTNAM | SOM | DESIGNERPutnam has been a member of SOM’s digital design group, Black Box Studio, since 2011, where he actively leads in their mission “to engage in all stages of the design process across all service disciplines, leveraging the power of advanced

computational design tools and methods to expose and explore new frontiers of conceptual thought and innovative form/space/place-making.” Having contributed to a wide range of architectural projects for over 10 years, he has gained valuable experience and insight into the areas of design, management, and execution across a highly diverse spectrum, from public art installations to large-scale mixed-use towers and urban infills. Putnam is also a member of the architecture faculty at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

AJ RAO | USG CORPORATION | SENIOR RESEARCHERRao works with the Building Science Group at USG Corporation, based at their Corporate Innovation Center, located in Libertyville, Illinois. His core expertise lies in the development and application

of technologies and policies related to the environmental impact of buildings. He also has a strong interest in the application of simulation modeling to support research and development activities. Rao has a PhD in Architectural Sciences from Rensselaer, and at USG, he works at the intersection of architecture, engineering, computation, and material science on developing next generation building materials and systems.

Economics from Georgia State University. While attending college, Bart worked as a fabricator for a large commercial glazing contractor in Atlanta.

COLIN MCCRONE | AUTODESK | COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN EVANGELISTMcCrone is a technical evangelist for computational design at Autodesk, advocating for computational design practices in BIM, gathering requirements for the development

of Dynamo, and supporting the Dynamo community of users.

McCrone’s background is in physics and architecture, and he worked on energy modeling tools for early stage architectural design at Cornell University prior to joining Autodesk.

MOSTAPHA ROUDSARI | UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, SCHOOL OF DESIGN | RESEARCH ASSOCIATERoudsari is an educator and software developer focused on the integration of parametric environmental analysis and architectural design.

Mostapha is the creator of two open-source environmental plugins, Ladybug and Honeybee, and co-developer of web applications such as epwmap, DesignExplorer, Pollination, and Hydra. He lectures and teaches seminars frequently at architecture and engineering schools, the AEC community, and recently as an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the University of Pennsylvania, Roudsari had worked as an Integration Applications Developer for Thornton Tomasetti in New York and as a Designer for Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill in Chicago.
