Someone really needs to take the ladders and black cats out of the Penrith Panthers dress-ing room.

Last Friday night’s loss to cellar dwellers Parramatta came at a monumental cost with star playmaker Matt

Moylan suffering an ankle injury that will see him miss around 10 weeks, while Jamie Soward injured a shoulder and will be forced to play out the rest of the season with the help of painkilling needles.

But even before the injuries to Moylan and Soward, everything was going wrong against the Eels last Friday night.

To put it bluntly, from the opening whis-tle it appeared that the Eels had turned up to play and Penrith hadn’t.

How the Panthers didn’t turn up given the buzz surrounding this match, the huge crowd and the fact it was a western Sydney

derby is hard to fathom, but it happened. Penrith showed some great determina-tion in patches and had the bounce of the ball gone their way a few times, could have even won the match, but there’s no doubting that it was the Eels who always looked in control. That’s not how a clash between eighth place and last should look or play out and it’d be an obvious concern for coach Ivan Cleary.

The one shining light was the perfor-mance of Bryce Cartwright, who earned himself a Dally M point in a performance that proved he will be one of Penrith’s most dangerous weapons in the back end of the season.

The Panthers somehow maintained their position in the top eight despite last Friday night’s loss but they won’t be so lucky if they fall to the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night at Pepper Stadium.

Melbourne are backing up from a tough clash against the Roosters on Monday night and a number of their key players – including Cameron Smith and Cooper Cronk – are playing their third match in 10 days, so there’s probably no better time for

Penrith to meet the formidable Storm. That said, after their worst performance of the season against the Roosters, Melbourne will be looking to make amends.

Penrith lacked any serious punch in attack last week, particularly from the forwards, and while Trent Merrin will solve that problem to a degree next year, it’s not a solution to the current issues.

Sam McKendry ran for 174 metres against Manly in round 10 but only managed 89 against the Eels.

Nigel Plum clocked up 151 metres against Manly but only 42 against the Eels (albeit from limited game time – 25 minutes against the Eels versus 37 against Manly).

The Eels were all over Penrith in defence and with the forwards unable to lay a solid attacking platform, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace didn’t have enough chances to create something.

The Panthers desperately need a better performance from their pack against the Storm on Saturday if they’re to put them-selves in a winning position.

Adam Docker has been named on an extended bench and while there’s obvi-ously been some issues keeping him out of first grade, Docker’s rampaging style is something Penrith desperately needs. I hope he gets a start.

The Panthers welcome back Tyrone Peachey from suspension while Dean Whare finally returns from injury.

Both will be fresh from their respective breaks and it could make a big difference against a tired Melbourne at the back end.

» Jamal Idris gave a very frank and open interview to The Sunday Telegraph last weekend, revealing he may walk away from rugby league as early as this year if the Panthers win a premiership. “If we win a premiership I am done. I am only 24 but I feel old. I am just discovering myself right now. I did not know who I was when I was a teenager. Who does? I see myself as more than a footballer,” Idris told the newspaper. Idris is an extremely talented footballer but a very complicated indi-vidual, as Panthers officials have quickly learned. They’re keeping a very close eye on him while he’s recovering from a leg injury and know that his mental state is of high importance during this process.

» There’s still confusion over Assistant Coach Trent Barrett’s likely switch from the Panthers to Manly. A meeting was scheduled to take place on Monday involving the playing group, where it was expected that Barrett’s departure would be officially announced. The meeting was suddenly cancelled, only adding to the uncertainty surrounding the coaching structure at not only the Panthers, but the Sea Eagles, where Geoff Toovey is said to be on borrowed time.

» The release of this week’s radio ratings provides an interesting insight into the weekend rugby league audiences. Triple M is still behind 2GB in the ratings, but had a 0.7 per cent increase on weekends in the latest survey. 2GB lost 0.3 per cent of its share on weekends in the survey. The ABC, who signed Andrew Moore to lead its commentary team this year, remained relatively stable. The 2GB and Triple M battle will continue to intensify in the seasons to come. Triple M clearly has the better quality rugby league con-tent across the weekends, but old habits die hard and it’s not surprising to see 2GB still leading the way.

» Talking of radio and Triple M, congratu-lations to Panthers legend Mark Geyer. He’s part of the Grill Team at breakfast, and they enjoyed a massive two per cent increase in their audience in the survey released on Tuesday. The Grill Team now has 7.8 per cent of the breakfast market, ahead of stations like NOVA, 2UE and the once great 2DAYFM.

» The NRL has finally acted on the very silly round 13 “backflip” rule, with a 10-day cooling off period to replace it. “I

think everyone agrees it is unseemly to have months of speculation about wheth-er a player is going to a rival club,” said NRL Head of Football, Todd Greenberg. “Our view is a 10-day cooling off period is an acceptable solution for all involved.”

» Former Panther Jarrod Sammut is on the hunt for a new club, with confirma-tion expected in the next week that he’s leaving English club Wakefield.

» Parramatta’s Pauli Pauli somehow escaped suspension this week after that hit on Jamie Soward last Friday night. He was charged by the NRL’s Match Review Committee, but the grading was so low

that he’ll be able to play in the Eels’ next game. The decision has baffled many of the game’s legends and experts, who say playmakers must be protected.

» Ex-Panthers Media Manager Emma Duxbury has landed on her feet, scoring a gig in breakfast radio. She’ll be present-ing the news on Sky Sport’s Big Sports Breakfast.

Penrith captain Peter Wallace has called on the NRL to put a stop to cheap shots in the game after his chief playmaker Jamie Soward was a victim of one last Friday night.

Soward was taken out late by Parramatta prop Pauli Pauli during the second half of Penrith’s loss to the Eels.

Soward was forced to leave the field in what was a crucial period for the Panthers but would later return, albeit in a consider-able amount of pain.

Pauli, who was cited for the illegal hit, was free to play on while the Panthers were down their most important man for the next 10 minutes.

Speaking with the media on Monday, Wallace said something needed to be done to protect players from late hits.

“Tougher penalties – whether that be send offs on the field or tougher suspen-sions – I don’t know,” he said.

“If you’re taking the ball to the line you expect to get hit but he (Soward) was a few metres off the line and was still hit late. It’s the really late hits, when you don’t have the ball and you’re really relaxed, that the NRL need to look at.

“The worst thing is we lost a player and nothing happened to them.

“He got put on report, that was it. It was pretty unfair.”

Pauli was charged with Grade 1 Danger-ous Contact by the Match Review Commit-tee, but escaped suspension with an early guilty plea.

Meanwhile, Wallace has welcomed the news that Dallin Watene-Zelezniak will replace the injured Matt Moylan at fullback.

“They are two different players but Dallin is skilful enough and his running game is great... I don’t think it’ll change the way we play too much,” Wallace said.

“I think we’ve had two games this whole year with our 7, 6, 9 and 1 on the field together.

“It’s not ideal but something we’ll have to deal with.”

In other news, Wallace made a successful return last Friday night after spending the past seven weeks recovering from minor knee surgery.

Wallace was due to return during Penrith’s Round 10 match against Manly but was a late withdrawal due to the sad passing of his mother, Dianne.

The 29-year-old said the last few weeks had been tough on him personally.

“I’m alright... it’s been a tough couple of weeks but I’m alright,” he said.

“The club has been really good. I can’t thank them enough for how they supported me.”

PENRITH have been dealt a massive injury blow with fullback Matt Moylan ruled out for at least the next 10 weeks.

Moylan tore ligaments in his ankle in the 11th minute of last Friday night’s loss to Parramatta at Pepper Stadium.

It’s a huge blow for the 24-year-old, who was celebrating his 50th NRL appearance in the game.

Moylan was assisted from the field by trainers and watched the rest of the clash from the sidelines.

Meanwhile, five-eighth Jamie Soward suffered an AC joint injury in his right shoulder after being hit in a late tackle by Parramatta’s Pauli Pauli.

After initial reports suggested that Soward could be facing another extended stint on the sidelines, the playmaker revealed on Twitter on Tuesday that he had been given the all clear to play Melbourne on Saturday.

Pauli was charged over the incident but escaped suspension.

Finally the ridiculous Round 13 dead-line, which allows players to backflip on a signed contract, looks set to be

buried. Head of Football Todd Greenberg said:

“Fans and clubs were frustrated with the ‘Round 13 rule’ because it can create uncertainty and speculation a long time after a contract has been signed”.

Sure the players across the game still have to agree on it yet but surely they will?

It’s been a real blight on the game and has never made sense.

I mean what’s the point of signing a contract if you can then renege on it months after the deal is done?

The only group that might be sad to see it go are the player managers who have used it to hold clubs to ransom.

We can thank the Daly Cherry-Evans circus for forcing the rule change.

Thank God we will never see such a farce again.

Under the proposed changes there will be a 10 business days ‘cooling off period’.

The new rule also says the club signing

the player can not announce it until after the 10 day ‘cooling off period’ has expired.

That certainly won’t stop the news leak-ing that a star player has signed elsewhere but it’s a major improvement.

Player managers will, of course, still try and use the 10 days to play clubs off against each other. Players also won’t be allowed to negotiate with rival clubs under the new rule until the final year of their current contract.

So all in all it’s a welcome change but still it probably doesn’t go all the way and completely fix the problem.

The game needs a totally fresh approach to its player transfer system.

Most major professional sports around the world use a transfer window and a draft, so why not the NRL?

The good news is that new head of strat-egy Shane Richardson will look at a draft as part of his blueprint for the game after the next broadcast deal in 2018.

For now let’s be grateful that a much needed change has come and not before time. Rest In Peace Round 13 deadline.

Penrith Panthers, in collaboration with FC11 and Sydney TAFE, have been running the Diploma of Sport Devel-

opment program in 2015. Currently 38 students study and train

at our Panthers Education and High Performance Training Facilities located at Pepper Stadium and at the purpose built facility next to Penrith Panthers Leagues Club.

The program merges sports science, coaching methodology, high perfor-mance training, professional and academic development, business theory, and mentoring by professional athletes and coaches.

Members of the Panthers’ coaching staff and support staff, including myself, work with FC11 lecturers and course coordina-tors to provide tutorials and assistance in training sessions and other activities.

Applications are currently being taken for students to commence the course mid-year, beginning on June 29.

The Diploma is a full-time 35-week program and is designed for students who have completed their school studies and are looking to pursue a career in football on and off the field, or want to gain entry into a related degree-level course.

Upon completion of the program all successful graduates are awarded qualifi-cations, such as a TAFE Diploma of Sport Development, and other sports-related qualifications.

The defending premiers looked set to suffer their second consecutive boilover in as many rounds, before Penrith scored nine points in the final three minutes of the game to record a remarkable 31-24 win over Manly at Brookvale Oval.

Both teams scored five tries but Will Smith’s five goals from six attempts, including three from the sideline, proved to be the difference.

Late changes to Penrith’s line-up were minimal, with fullback Kieran Moss, out injured since Round 1 a late call-up, replacing centre Robert Jennings in a reshuffled backline.

The opening 25 minutes gave little indication of being the thrilling contest this game was, as both sides played poorly. Penrith’s failure to complete their sets was offset by Manly’s inability to ask questions of the competition’s best defence despite having dominated pos-session and territory.

However, once both sides began to play expansive footy, the points followed.

Manly scored first through Delroy Ber-ryman before Penrith’s passes began to stick and they scored three unanswered tries through Eddie Aiono (two) and Tom Eisenhuth with Penrith’s halves Isaac John and Adrian Davis instrumental in all

three, enabling the Panthers to lead 16-4 at half-time.

Manly dominated possession early in the second half and levelled the scores with tries to Ben Fritz (two) and ex-Pan-ther Tony Satini.

The lead changed hands twice more through tries to Aiono (Penrith) and Michael Chee Kam (Manly) before Manly conceded a penalty 10m out, directly in front that allowed Will Smith to level the scores for the Panthers with three min-utes remaining.

Tupou Sopoaga’s 25m field goal in the next set broke Manly’s hearts, before Pen-rith’s win was sealed when Chris Smith broke clear from the short kick-off before finding Aiono to score his fourth try of the game.

Round 13 is Country Round, which sees this Saturday’s Penrith’s home game against nearest rivals, Wentworthville Magpies, transferred to Port Macquarie Regional Stadium with a 6pm kick-off.

Wentworthville have named a strong team that includes the likes of Adam Quinlan, John Folau, Vai Toutai, Luke Kelly and Joseph Paulo, as they look to avenge their recent 16-4 loss to Penrith.

Penrith have lost Adam Docker, who is 18th man in the NRL.

Not that they didn’t already know it but Penrith are officially the best team out west after a thumping 36-12 defeat of the Parramatta Eels last Friday night.

The second last placed Eels were no contest for the top of the table Panthers, who incredibly led 32-0 with just five minutes remaining.

After some great attacking raids by the Eels early, which resulted in no points, it was the Panthers who got on the board first after 16 minutes through young PNG sensation Stanton Albert.

Penrith were in once again 10 min-utes later when winger Fuimanu Enese scored after taking a great ball from Dy-lan Edwards. Corey Harawira’s conver-sion fell wide of the posts, which kept the Panthers up 10-0.

Penrith’s next try followed after lock Tyrone May played the ball short to Maliko Filino, who was too strong for Parramatta’s defence and barrelled over.

A top conversion by Harawira from the sideline put the Panthers up 16-0.

But Penrith weren’t done toying with their prey just yet, with five-eighth Dylan Edwards showing off his great running game to go over and score just before halftime.

the Panthers up 22-0 at the break.It took Penrith 10 minutes into the sec-

ond half before they got their fifth try of the evening with big prop Moses Leota surging through the defensive wall to score. 11 minutes later Filino scored his second try of the evening after catching the perfect pass from winger Christian Crichton.

Edwards missed the conversion but the Panthers already had a very healthy lead at 32-0.

Just when it looked like Penrith would hold the Eels scoreless, the visitors finally had some luck, scoring twice in the final five minutes of the game.

Penrith also bagged a try in the dying moments through Thompson Tuigi-mala, just to add salt into Parramatta’s wounds.
