The Penrith Panthers go on the road for the final time in 2015 on Monday night when they travel to the nation’s capital to take on the Canberra Raiders.

It is a dangerous trip in which to expect a victory – the Panthers have very little to play

for, would feel down on confidence after last week’s dour loss to the Dragons and will face less than comfortable conditions on the last day of winter.

Adding to the woes is that Penrith will be without their best defender, Elijah Taylor, who played on for as long as he could with a broken hand last week against the Drag-ons before being forced from the field.

25 years ago a match between Penrith and Canberra at the back end of the season would have been a blockbuster. Success is never permanent, however, and in 2015 both of these sides find themselves

as non-glamour clubs fighting for pride and aiming to give their fans hope that brighter times are ahead.

For the Panthers, if injuries hadn’t caused so much grief in 2015, the finals would have been almost a certainty. Fans may be frustrated at the end result this year but they can sleep peacefully during the off-season knowing that at full strength, their team will be among the premiership favourites next year.

Canberra fans are probably a little less hopeful – they’ve seen their team win just twice at home this season and fail to close out matches that should have been theirs for the taking. However, former Panther Blake Austin has given fans at least something to cheer in 2015 and with Aidan Sezer joining the Green Machine next year, there is the foundation of a competitive squad.

There is every indication that this will be a close game, and hopefully nothing like the 74-12 mauling the Panthers copped at this same venue in 2008 (yes, it still hurts to think about it).

These sides met a little over a month ago,

with the Raiders prevailing 34-24 on a day that essentially ended Penrith’s realistic hopes of making the finals.

Other recent games between the two sides have also been close, including two six-point wins to Penrith last year. History shows that with the odd exception, games between the Panthers and Raiders are usually only decided by a couple of tries and generally late in the contest.

All-time matches between the two sides are extremely close in terms of the win/

loss tally and incredibly, according to the Rugby League Project, just 12 points separate the Panthers and Raiders in the all-time point scoring tally for matches between these two clubs. That’s quite a stat considering they’ve played almost 70 times since 1982.

While Penrith were disappointing in the 19-12 loss to the Dragons last weekend, you cannot question their will to win. They turned up to play, but injuries again caught up with them and the lack of cohesion in attack was obvious. Had one or two passes stuck, the Panthers would have run away with the game but it simply wasn’t to be.

Hopefully that loss hasn’t drained too much of the side’s confidence because if they turn up with the same attitude against Canberra on Monday night then we’ll in the very least be in for an enter-taining game. At this point of the year, there’s nothing to lose in just throwing the ball around so while we’ll probably see the odd mistake, at least we may get some points and witness some great tries.

How good is it to watch the Hayne Plane chasing his dream and doing so well.

Just a talented boy from Minto who grew up to play in the NRL. But he got bored with that and so decided to take on the impossible, a crack at one of the biggest sports in the world and incredibly a sport he’d only ever played on the XBox.

The former Eels fullback has certainly silenced his knockers and doubters.

I’ll admit I reserved my judgement because I knew nothing about the NFL and all those who did, told me he would really struggle to make it.

Well I’ve been lucky enough to spend some time in NSW Origin camp with Hayne last year. I’ve interviewed him many times and also observed up close his incredible natural talent.

Whether kicking goals from impossible angles at training or beating all comers at FIFA on Playstation with teammates back in the room, he could do it all.

Hayne quite simply is a one of a kind talent and a highly competitive “freak”.

From what I saw and knew of Hayne I could imagine him bamboozling all those would-be NFL defenders but I was told “forget it, he’s no chance making the cut in a game he’s never played”.

Well as a rugby league fan and Hayne fan, I think I speak for many of us who are absolutely loving what we are seeing.

Surely rugby league is the perfect train-ing ground for players wanting a crack at the NFL.

Think about it, our players, especially fullbacks, have to do everything at speed and under pressure with a wall of defend-ers coming at them. Jarryd now has more time and space to weave his magic and dominate the NFL.

This story is the biggest Australian sports story that I can remember and huge in the US as well.

Yes they are trying to keep a lid on it over there but I think we can all get very excited because in the words of his 49ers coach Jim Tomsula, “the guy’s doing really well, he’s making a great case for himself”.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE

We have had the luxury of some great experience in the ranks the last couple of seasons. It has been a

huge advantage for the younger genera-tion to have these role models as part of their development.

We are preparing to say goodbye to Nigel Plum, Nathan Smith and Brent Kite, who have decided to hang up the boots after distinguished careers. Others including Sika Manu and Lewis Brown are leav-ing Penrith to continue their careers elsewhere. Collectively there is over 1000 NRL games of experience departing the club next season.

All of these men have played a signifi-cant role in the growth and success of the Panthers over the last few years. All of them are great clubmen, family men and leaders.

Fortunately there is good reason to be optimistic. The baton will be passed onto players like Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Bryce Cartwright and Isaah Yeo. They have had the opportunity to learn from our retirees and departing players, on and off the field, and next season some of the responsibility to lead the way passes to

them. I can assure you they are ready.If anyone knows our retirees person-

ally, they would know that they are very humble people. They won’t ask for much fuss or fanfare to be made but I think some is deserved!

So please everyone join us at the last game of the season next Saturday against Newcastle. Join MG’s Members March and show your Panther Pride one more time in 2015. Let’s fill Pepper Stadium with Panthers fans and give these great men the send-off they deserve. Let’s honour the tireless service they have given this club and the game we all love. A big crowd will help us finish the year on a high and hopefully send these boys out winners.

Recently retired Penrith Panthers prop Brent Kite will auction off his 2008 Clive Churchill Medal in December to raise money for char-ity.

The 34-year-old officially retired from the game last week after 313 first grade appearances, 10 Origins and two premier-ships.

The former Manly and St George Illa-warra star, who hasn’t played a game for the Panthers since breaking his leg against the Titans in April, will auction off his 2008 Clive Churchill Medal at a retirement dinner later this year.

Funds raised from the auction of the prized medal will go towards Spinal Home Help (SHH), a charity very close to Kite’s heart.

“About a decade ago my cousin, who lives in Brisbane, had a surfing accident and became a quadriplegic. He heads up the charity Spinal Home Help,” Kite told Extra Time.

SHH provides one-to-one peer mentor-ing support to people with spinal chord injuries and their immediate family

members. Support is provided as the client transitions from hospital through rehabilitation to living at home and reen-gaging with the community.

“My cousin has dealt with his injury really well while others in his position haven’t. He’s such an inspirational guy and it motivates you to help where you can,” Kite said.

“I wanted to do something different that draws attention and thought having a charity retirement dinner would be a good idea to raise money.”

Kite received his Clive Churchill Medal following a man of the match performance during Manly’s thumping 40-0 Grand Final win over the Storm in 2008.

Kite said he was recently in touch with Clive Churchill’s widow, Joyce, to inform her of his intentions.

“I got a hold of Joyce a few days ago and she was all for the idea. I hope to have her at the retirement dinner so she can pass on the medal,” he said.

“Parting ways with it is no trouble because I’ll always be mentioned in the same breath as Churchill, who’s one of the first Immortals and greats of the game.

“My name is forever linked with his and that’s a nice little thing for a guy who thought if he got to first grade he would’ve achieved all of his footballing goals.”

» Panther fans of the future will most likely be amazed when a time capsule is eventually dug up containing the club’s 2015 ANZAC Day jersey. The Penrith Bi-centenary time capsule will be buried at Thornton Oval next month, packed with items that best represent Penrith and its people. After an online vote, Panthers fans decided that the ANZAC jersey should be included in the time capsule ahead of the club’s other 2015 jerseys.

» Talking of the Bicentenary, the Pan-thers’ last home game of the year against Newcastle next week will have an historic feel to mark the special occasion. Penrith City Council and the Panthers held a joint media event on Wednesday to launch festivities surrounding next Saturday afternoon’s match, which will recognise rugby league’s significant role in the his-tory of the city of Penrith.

» Tackling machine Elijah Taylor has been ruled out of Penrith’s remaining two matches after breaking his hand.

» The new reality TV show designed to discover an unearthed NRL talent will have a great Penrith flavour. ‘The NRL Rookie’, which will air on Channel Nine next year and be hosted by Erin Molan, will feature Panthers 1991 Grand Final stars Brad Fittler and Mark Geyer. Fittler will act as Head Coach through the show while Geyer will be the forwards coach. 25 hopeful NRL rookies are currently be-ing put through their paces in a series of

weekly challenges, followed by matches against a tough array of opposition. This will culminate in a special live broadcast of the show next year where all 16 NRL clubs have the opportunity to “draft” the eventual winner.

» Jamal Idris says he feels “helpless” watching his teammates play out the sea-

son while he recovers from a serious ACL injury. “There’s nothing worse than being so helpless on the sideline watching your team play and there’s nothing you can do,” Idris said. “It’s definitely stressful. Then you start getting angry at yourself thinking you let them down because your leg just fell apart. At the end of the day, an ACL is nothing you can help. There’s no particular stretch or anything you can do for it, it’s just one of those things.”

» Recently retired Panthers prop Brent Kite is expected to take up a head coach-ing role with one of Penrith’s junior representative teams next season. Speak-ing with Extra Time’s Nathan Taylor, Kite revealed his next career move would see him remain at the club next year and beyond. “I’m heading towards coaching here, well I’m hoping it’s here,” he said. “I’m keen to be a head coach and want to coach juniors like Harold Matthews or SG Ball.”

» The NRL is ramping up Grand Final week celebrations in attempt to match the AFL’s parade and the major festivities that surround similar events interna-tionally. ‘NRL Nation’ will be held from Thursday, October 1 until Saturday, Octo-ber 3 at Darling Harbour, with fans from all clubs invited to attend and soak up the Grand Final feel. Penrith are still in the minor premiership race but will need results to go their way after holding the New Zealand Warriors scoreless in the second half to run out victorious 22-10 in Auckland.

Wins to Mounties and Wyong ensure they enjoy a better for and against differ-ential than the Panthers going into the fi-nal round before the finals and are highly fancied to win their last round games and keep Penrith in third spot.

There was some mixed news for Penrith with Ben Murdoch-Masila (ankle) passed fit to play but Sam Anderson (wrist) was ruled out, which saw Holden Cup hooker Sione Katoa handed the captaincy.

A double to Warriors hooker, Siliva Hav-ili cancelled out tries to Penrith’s Waqa Blake and Malakai Watene-Zelezniak leaving the game in the balance at 10-all at the break.

The second half, unlike a relatively mis-take-free first half, had plenty of errors as both sides tensed up at the thought of not losing to their opponents.

But after some concerted pressure by the Warriors failed to buckle Penrith’s tryline defence, the Panthers soon after broke the deadlock when half Sam Scar-lett put on a show and go to fool the War-riors defence and with Corey Harawira-

Neara’s conversion, Penrith led 16-10 with 17 minutes remaining.

Penrith doubled that lead soon after when Harawira-Naera backed up a Daniel Foster line-break to score his first NSW Cup try and seal victory for the young Panthers.

Penrith now turn their attention to the final round of the regular season with a home game against Illawarra.

The Cutters will be no pushovers hav-ing already defeated the Panthers four weeks ago 22-18 but come into this clash with the likes of Eto Nabuli, Craig Garvey, George Rose and Mark Ioane not named.

Nonetheless the Cutters have named an experienced team for the clash with the likes of Nathan Green, Russell Packer, Heath L’Estrange, Luke Page, Shannon Wakeman and Peni Botiki.

In team news, Waqa Blake finds himself back in first grade with Chris Smith joining Malakai Watene-Zelezniak in the centres, while prop Sam Anderson returns to start.

Pat Hollis, Josh Tangitau and Atonio Pelesasa (debut) have all been named on the bench, as Brent Naden, Corey Harawira-Naera, Oliver Clark and James Fisher-Harris have been recalled to Pen-rith’s Holden Cup side.

MINOR PREMIERSHIP RACE DOWN TO THE WIRE AS FINAL ROUND OF THE NSW CUP GETS UNDERWAY

Just weeks out from the Holden Cup finals and the Penrith Panthers have suffered a shock loss, going down to the second-last placed St George Illawarra Dragons 28-16.

The 12 point defeat last Thursday evening at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium put a huge dent in Penrith’s minor pre-miership hopes with North Queensland leapfrogging them into top spot.

The young Panthers didn’t look themselves throughout the 80 minute contest with the lowly Dragons appear-ing far more eager to get the job done.

Penrith opened the scoring early through second-rower Corey Waddell but the Dragons hit back minutes later when winger Tom Carr crossed the line.

With the Panthers continuing to give away dumb penalties late in the tackle count, the Dragons took advantage, scoring the next two tries to lead at the break 14-4.

When both sides hit the field for the second stanza, it was the Panthers who got on the board first through Sam El-win after the clever five-eighth snatched a spiralling bomb out of the hands of Dragons fullback Matthew Dufty to score besides the posts.

However Penrith’s comeback didn’t

last too long, with the Dragons striking back with the next two tries to blow out their lead to 22-10.

With 10 minutes to go, Penrith gave themselves a small glimmer of hope when prop Cowen Epere drove his way over beside the posts. Nathan Cleary’s conversion put the Panthers just six points behind.

With four minutes left, it appeared as though Penrith had pulled off a miracle but Epere was deemed to have knocked on as he charged for the tryline.

Penrith’s hopes for an eighth straight win were finally dashed with three minutes to go when Dragons prop Jay Gallagher crashed over to complete one of the year’s biggest upsets.

The second-placed Panthers will battle the sixth-placed Raiders this Monday afternoon in chilly Canberra.
