Persons facing moderate to severe food insecurity has increased
exponentially over the last year
THE CURRENT SCENARIO
India was home to the largest number of undernourished people in the world even before the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest edition of the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, released jointly by five UN organisations in July, reveals that the pandemic and failure on the part of state to combat its effects, has led to a significant increase in the prevalence of hunger and food insecurity in the country.
According to the data presented in the report, the prevalence of moderate to severe food insecurity in India rose by about 6.8 per cent in 2018-20.
The number of persons facing moderate to severe food insecurity has increased by about 9.7 Crore
The increase in prevalence of hunger in India captured by the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU): 14 per cent in 2019 to 15.3 per cent in 2020 - and this s likely to be an underestimate.
Prevalence of Moderate and Severe Food Insecurity (PMSFI) estimates show that there were about 43 Crore of moderate to severe food-insecure people in India in 2019. As a result of the pandemic-related disruptions, this increased to 52 Crore in one year.
High (and fluctuating) food prices, shrinking public investment and the economic slowdown have compounded the distress among working classes and the peasantry. With low and uncertain incomes, families dependent on the informal economy do not have assured access to adequate and nutritious food.

In March 2020, The Akshaya Patra Foundation turned all its resources to offering Food Relief across the country. The Foundation served at-risk
communities with Wholesale (Cooked) Meals and Grocery Kits, expanding food relief in August to support our Mid-Day Meal beneficiaries with
Happiness Kits. This year, Akshaya Patra has expanded Relief Efforts, and is constantly adapting its service offerings to meet the need of the day.
Current programmes include:
Over the past 14 months, Relief Efforts have extended to Flood Relief in Bihar and Assam,
and distribution of grocery kits to pregnant and lactating mothers,
and young children in Anganwadi Centres.

CAPSULE PROGRAMMES TO MEET THE CURRENT NEED
American Tower Corporation, (ATC) a staunch partner through Akshaya Patra’s Food Relief Efforts, came forward in April 2021 with a plan to support socio-economically disadvantaged communities with medical kits.
Every medical kit contains a pulse oximeter and a digital thermometer. Between August 12 – 28, ATC and Akshaya Patra have scheduled 80 distribution drives across 21 locations, in both, the North and South of the country. These drives will be conducted with the on-ground aid of ATC employee volunteers.
9,272 medical kits will be distributed through this initiative.

Raksha Kits to Incentivize Vaccination Drives
The aim of this initiative is to increase vaccination uptake, thereby enhancing resilience at the individual level, as well as a faster path to herd immunity, while protecting lives and livelihoods. This incentivized scheme, helps overcome vaccine hesitancy due to associated and indirect costs, misinformation, wage loss due to absence from work (especially in the case of daily wagers), fear of side effects, and overcoming negative communal beliefs about vaccinations in general.
