SITUATION OF ARTISANAL FISHERIES IN GALICIA

1. Reduction of fish resources

• Reduction of income for fishermen• Abandonment of artisanal fisheries• Depopulation of fishing communities• Marine spatial occupancy dropped by more industrial fleets

Constraints to efficient and sustainable management

1. The Institutional Framework:• Resource management centralised with Authorities

2. The Market:

• The Market absorbs all production

3. Socio-demographic and cultural profile:

• Resistant to change

Towards a new scenario in Fishing Resource Management: CONCLUSIONS

• Adaptative co-management improves fishing management efficiency: it is more flexible and adaptable to the local sector’s needs and resources

• Better orientation the management decissions• Improves the fulfilment and acceptance of regulations• Promotes a new relationship culture between: Fishermen– Fishermen and marine ecosystems, Fishermen and public

authorities (more symmetrical and closer)
