Main St., 16 years ago after having worked for several cousins’ restaurants on the West Coast and in Green Bay. His downtown full-service, sit-down dining spot has space for 120 guests and offers lunch and dinner seven days a week. An extensive menu lists 25 Mexican dinner combinations, a dozen key “house specialties,” Mexican favorites, a children’s menu, and even a few American dishes. Cocktails, wine and beer (some from Mexico) are available, but the big draw is the Mazatlan margarita, which comes in eight flavors. Mango is the favorite, Cortez says. Arriving from Mexico to live in the United States 30 years ago, Cortez first settled in the state of Washington. There, he worked at cousins’ restaurants in Seattle and Oak Harbor — a waterfront town on Whidbey Island where a U.S. Navy base was the setting for the movie, “An Officer and a Gentleman.” From Washington, Cortez moved to Boise, Idaho, to work at the Mexican restaurant of another cousin. His West Coast experience laid the groundwork for Cortez’s venture into restaurant ownership and his relocation to Wisconsin 16 years ago — a move that first took him to Green Bay. There, he briefly helped another cousin at his restaurant before opening his own in Fond du Lac. Cortez has operated Mazatlan at the same South Main Street location near Sixth Street for almost 17 years. “There were no other Mexican restaurants here at the time,” Cortez said. “I think I was the first one.” Named after city Some customers may feel like they are on a Mexican vacation when they walk into Cortez’s Mazatlan Family Dining Restaurant. In fact, he chose the name for his eatery because of the Mexican city with the same name. “I liked that city in Mexico and I liked the name,” Cortez said. Mazatlan, a city located just east of the tip of the Baja Peninsula, is home to the second largest lighthouse in the world and is warm and desirable vacation spot in Mexico for tourists this time of year. Mazatlan in downtown Fond du Lac sizzles with Mexican atmosphere for diners. Its stucco walls painted in a burnt orange color are filled with Mexican art. Eye-catching murals of Mexican scenes were hand-painted on the walls by a friend of Cortez’s from Mexico who now lives in Oshkosh. Rounded archways trimmed and lighted with strings of colored lights form a cozy entry to each booth along the stucco walls decorated with art. Mexican music plays in background while guests dine. Mazatlan expanded four years ago, adding space that used to be an adjacent coffee shop. An arched doorway opens and extends into a second eating area decorated in the same way. The addition doubled the amount of dining space. Family recipes While atmosphere is important, food made from family recipes has been the key to Mazatlan’s success. Jessica Galindo, who has worked at Mazatlan for seven years as a waitress, quickly names a few items she sees customers ordering over and over again. She cites the Nachos Mazatlan — an appetizer consisting of fresh corn chips topped with beans, guacamole, sour cream, tomato, green onions, jalapeno peppers and melted cheese. Galindo also says a “house specialty” that is especially popular is the Carne Asada, showcasing tender slices of grilled steak delivered with the traditional Mexican side dishes. Cortez adds that the Macho Burrito and Burrito Mazatlan are also favorites with many guests. Price is one factor Cortez feels is unique about his restaurant. With few exceptions, most items on the menu are under $12. “The prices are reasonable and the fact everything is homemade, using our family recipes and special spices — that is unique, too.” The location sends a lot of downtown traffic his way, Cortez said. “Many who work and are in the downtown for business or pleasure come in as our guests,” he said. Victor Cortez opened Mazatlan Family Restaurant, 237 S.

Travel Leaders has its office at 49-51 N. Main St. in downtown Fond du Lac.

The Reporter photo by Patrick Flood

Fox Valley Travel was started in 1960 by Harold Juedes in the Fox Valley area. Over the years, Fox Valley Travel acquired more than 20 travel agencies, changing its name to Fox

World Travel in 2000.

It is the largest vacation travel agency in Wisconsin, with 11 travel agency locations throughout the state and ranks as the 19th largest travel agency in the nation.

For travel information, call the Fond du Lac office at (920) 921-1395 or visit online at www.goFox.com

Signs that the economy is improving are being felt at local travel agencies.

“We are seeing travel picking up again,” said Jennifer Sabish, branch manager and travel specialist at Fox World Travel, 184 N. Main St. “Consumers are putting travel as a priority in their lives again.”

The top three popular destinations this winter are Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe, Sabish said.

She cites warm weather, beaches, and all-inclusive resorts as the lure for Mexican and Caribbean destinations. The drawing card for Europe, she says, is its history, culture, sites and scenery.

Vacations to Europe — especially Italy, the Mediterranean and Greece — are on the rise.

“We are selling more Europe than we have in the last two years,” Sabish said.

Reasons for the interest in Europe hint at a gradually improving economy but also elicit some “feel good” factors as

motivation for the destination.

“Our clients are looking to create memories, reconnect with family, relax and revitalize,” Sabish said. “They want to travel to destinations they haven’t experienced yet.”

Sabish also cites improvements in connections and airports in recent years.

“We have seen an increase in the number of non-stop flights from Milwaukee to many destinations. We have also seen an increase in service availability from the Outagamie County Airport,” Sabish said. “These two airports are the most popular for serving the Fond du Lac area consumer.”

She said the role of the travel agent has become important.

“The consumer relies on us to help them choose a vacation that exceeds their expectations, and we at Fox World Travel take pride in doing just that,” Sabish said.

With a long, cold winter still hovering, daydreams turn to strolling white sand beaches offering warm sunshine and pristine blue waters.

It’s a true symptom of “cabin fever” (and many suffer from it).

One solution is to stash the snow shovel and pull out the snorkeling equipment. Then call a local travel agent to help plan a quick getaway to a warm destination.

Local travel agency manager Gale Groth of Travel Leaders, 49 N. Main St, is the “doctor on call” when it comes to assisting area residents with travel plans. Contacting Groth or others at Travel Leaders could be the perfect tonic for “cabin fever” blues.

Places like Disneyworld in Orlando, Fla., Cancun, Los Cabos or the Riviera

Maya in Mexico, or Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic are popular this winter, Groth said.

“Hawaii is another destination we’re seeing more of a demand for at this time,” she said.

Cabo San Lucas, a Mexican vacation spot at the tip of the Baja Peninsula where the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean meet, is a warm destination that Groth’s customers enjoy. Breath-taking beaches line the resort area of Los Cabos — a place where the lively town of Cabo San Lucas is found. The place is known as the Marlin Capital of the World, and options for fun include deep sea diving, snorkeling, golf and taking in the night life.

people,” said Groth, noting that each destination getaway has its highlights that lure vacationers.

“They are drawn to Mexico for the sun, warm climate and beaches — and to Punta Cana for palm trees and lots of white sand beaches,” she said.

change of placeGroth has noticed a trend toward vacationers wanting something different. Costa Rica is popping up on wish lists more often.

“Travelers want a change of place,” Groth said.

The country of Costa Rica is located in Central America and extends from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. It offers lush rain forests, volcanoes, rivers winding through picturesque mountains, national parks and forests, and pristine beaches.

While the economy begins to pick up speed, Groth is noticing requests for shorter trips.

“It could be due to cost or any number of factors,” she said. “Some who have new jobs don’t have the amount of vacation time they used to have.”

While booking vacations online is convenient, meeting with a real person

has advantages.

“We can book their whole vacation for them, and if they have questions, they have someone to call,” she said. “A lot of people will research online for a vacation but then end up calling us to book it.”

Recently, the Sheboygan-based Travel Leaders group, which consists of six offices located in Cedarburg, Fond du Lac, Sheboygan, Plymouth, Menasha and Green Bay, was named the best among hundreds of Travel Leaders locations nationwide. The honor was presented during the 2010 Travel Leaders National Meeting in Kissimmee, Fla.

One example of Travel Leaders’ success is booking Disneyworld vacations.

“We are an earmark agency for Disney, meaning we are one of the top agencies in Wisconsin for selling Disney trips,” Groth said.

Travel Leaders location in the downtown is a positive.

“Being right here on Main Street is great,” she said. “We have two hours of free parking out in front. Some people just walking by will stop in — it’s a friendly area of the downtown and a lot of nice businesses surround us.”

Adventure, excitement, celebrations and the thrill of exploration -- You can find it all at the Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac, a popular downtown destination that draws children and their caregivers, school groups, scouting groups, social service organizations, and even adult groups!

Peek inside the museum and you will find kids climbing walls, sliding down slides and recording radio shows. Look further and you will see babies and toddlers stacking blocks, crawling through tunnels and exploring a variety of structural challenges. While the kids are enjoying the fun and learning; parents, grandparents, teachers and friends are treated to adult conversation and the satisfaction of providing quality family activities.

The Children’s Museum offers a wide range of interactive exhibits and educational programs for children under the age of twelve. Upholding its vision of “providing a safe place where all children can learn about their communities and their culturally diverse world,” its play areas are based on a global theme. Cleverly named, custom designed exhibits such as the Shadow Safari, Great Wall Construction, Pizzeria Frazioni, Fond du Lac Central and Great Toddler Reef,

offer opportunities to experience hands-on fun.

Providing Quality children’s ProgrammingComplementing the themes portrayed by its interactive exhibits, the Children’s Museum offers a wide array of quality family programs. Kids are sure to enjoy any or all of the programs that add excitement and education to their visit.

Sunday Stories ~ A newly launched weekend program that uses creative dramatics and group interaction to explore stories from the New York Public Libraries “100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know”. Lillian Nolan, a passionate museum volunteer, engages children in literature, learning and fun.

Artists In Action ~ Children’s Museum visitors are guided by the some of Fond du Lac’s best and brightest artists, including John Scotello and students from the UW-Fond du Lac Art Department. This collaborative program allows children to explore a “mystery art” medium each week and create an original work of art.

Music Museum and Me ~ This very popular interactive music class is geared for children ages 3 and under. Along

with a parent or caregiver, children experience the fun of the museum setting along with rhythm and dance.

Theatre Programs for Kids ~ For a second year in a row, the Children’s Museum will be partnering with the Fond du Lac School District to bring the Missoula Traveling Theatre to town. Children ages 5 – 18 will have a chance to perform in The Pied Piper or to participate in a variety of performing arts workshops.

Summer Programs and Camps ~ The museum offers a wide variety of summer programs for children up to 12 years of age. Kids can choose from art, music, science and cultural classes.

Making connections with schools and communityIn addition to the museum’s general admission traffic, it has welcomed students from nearly 50 schools within a 60-mile radius. The Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac continues to work jointly with educators from public, private and higher education institutions to define learning objectives that can be advanced by the museum’s shared resources.

The museum recently launched several new educational programs, such Music

Around the World, Livin On the Ledge, Museum Map Challenge and My Big World, each aligned with curriculum standards from preschool through fourth grade. The programs can be added to any group trip to the museum and are designed to actively engage students in learning. Teachers are invited to enjoy museum time and then to explore many of the wonders of the downtown such as the Fond du Lac Public Library, Windhover Center for the Arts, YMCA or one of the Fond du Lac’s great local parks.

adding Fun (and Ease) to Birthday celebrations Birthday parties are fun, but they come with a long list of projects for mom and dad: invitations, party favors, themes, cake, snacks, games, clean up and thank you cards and more. The museum offers a variety of birthday party packages and themes ranging in price from $80 - $140. The location is perfect for celebrating a child’s special occasion and the museum even provides staff to help mom and dad enjoy the party too!
