Swami Sivanatha Kurukkal recited prayers and conducted religious activities according to Hindu traditions. e Hindu harvest festival, ai Pongal is one of the important religious events celebrated in Sri Lanka. It is the thanksgiving ceremony of Hindus to show their gratitude towards the Sun God for helping them to reap a bountiful harvest. Sri Lanka is one of those destinations that has almost too much to offer. A Unesco World Heritage Site is usually a good place to start – except that this island has eight of them. Sigiriya is famed for its fifth century, rock- perched palace, wonderful frescoes and restored water gardens, while the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka World Heritage Site bathes the eyes with rolling hills of verdant tea plantations and cascading waterfalls. Then there’s the pretty hill station of Kandy, where the Esala Perahera festival in July and August sees the sacred tooth of Bud- dha paraded through the town accompa- nied by exotic dancers and 100 elephants. Elephants also abound in Sri Lanka. One of the best places to see them is the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, reputed to have the largest herd of captive pachyderms in the world. Sri Lanka Embassy, Washington DC began its calendar of events for the year, with a colorful celebration of the Hindu harvest festival, Thai Pongal amidst a large gathering of Hindu devotees of the Sri Lankan American community, representatives Sri Lanka associations and US officials.
