2. Using Graphics

After, Alternative 1This slide eliminates the words and provides a background for the speaker’s information.
After, Alternative 2In some cases words are not even needed. A good graphic can provide an effective backdrop for the speaker’s words.

3. Numbers in Place of Bullets
Before
AfterFor some learning styles numbering items helps them understand the ideas quicker than just plain bullets. As a general rule with more than 3 bullets, number the items.

4. Combining Slides Into One
Before
AfterIf the objectives is to draw a comparison between the two lists, then displaying them on one slide allows the attendees to understand the relationships. If the objective is simply to cover each list, then the slides would not be combined. Always ask what is the slide’s objective to determine the best design.

5. Simplifying Charts
Before
After3 dimensional graphs and charts take longer to understand than simplified 2 dimensional ones. Eliminating most of the data and information helps the participant focus on the 1-2 points made by the illustration. Complete data can be in the attendee’s handout.
6. Simple BackgroundAvoid using the “stock backgrounds” that come with the software. A simple gradient background using a cool color is more effective than over used and distracting backgrounds.
