Note of the Week………………

What a great worship experience we had yesterday! I so enjoyed our “sing-a-long” and seeing the faces of not only the 8:30 worshipers but also, the faces of the 11:00 congregation! I got so confused, though, when many of you were not sitting in the “right” seats! I’m sure I will get over it because the church was so full - 263 to be exact! And it was so nice to have some of our young adults participating in the service, along with communion by intinction! It was a nice blending of both services with some great congregational singing! Let’s keep it up! And by the way, if you would like to choose a song for us to sing at our 9:50 “sing-a-long,” write it on a pink slip of paper found at the Connection Point table and put it in the collection plate as it is passed. I’m looking forward to this coming Sunday, July 14th, as well, because we are singing three hymns during the service that I really enjoy: “Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love” and “God of the Sparrow.” Also, Leda Juengerman, granddaughter of Paula and John Juengerman, will be singing “A Simple Song” by Leonard Bernstein during the Offertory. I would like to invite any of you who might previously have sung in choirs and/or enjoy contributing to worship through music in a choir setting, to join the Chancel Choir! We will begin rehearsals again on July 31st, the last Wednesday of this month. Try us! I think you will like us!

See you in church on Sunday.

The Journey

Sharon Curry, Community Health Evangelism Facilitator South Sudan

Children of God, Welcome Home “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.” Matthew 10:40 Those words took on a whole new meaning for me last week. It has been a long journey, filled with waiting and wondering that has led me on an amazing journey where I have met God in the most unexpected places. Places I never expected to be and places I thought I would stay. But, as often is the case, our journeys don’t often go in the direction we plan, but they always go in the direction God plans. Last week I returned to the US for a time of planning and discernment, planning for “what next” since rainy season is making it impossible for me to return to Akobo once again. While that is an important part of the story, it is not the story I will tell today. After spending a week in Juba, waiting for the rains to stop so a plane could land in Akobo, it was decided that I would come back to the US so that I can meet with World Mission staff and we can develop a new plan. This last leg of the journey is the story for today… I boarded a plane in Juba, South Sudan and landed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. We left Ethiopia and landed in Khartoum, Sudan. When we landed, the pilot announced we would be boarding new passengers but it wouldn’t take long because they didn’t have any luggage. We waited a bit and they began to filter on the plane – two lines of people in all stages of emotions. Young children full of excitement, eyes sparkling, bouncing down the isles. Older people looking a little leery, elderly, wide eyed, overwhelmed and full of fear. Each wearing a blue and white name tag on a string around their neck, clutching a blue and white plastic bag with a couple of pieces of paper and a number written in big sharpie marker. Each one marked with the IOM – International Office of Migration – the branch of the United Nations that relocates refugees throughout the world. I remembered, as they began to find and settle in their seats, the pilot said they didn’t have any luggage. I was struck as I watched them filter by, that all they had was the blue and white bag they clutched in their hands, and the clothes they were wearing. We landed in Frankfort and began to disembark. As we began to file down the walkway I saw a man with an IOM sign waiting for our guests. I didn’t think much more about them as I left the plane and made my way through the Frankfort airport. I didn’t think much about it when we board the next leg of the flight that would return me to the US and realized the back half of the plane was pretty full. I thought a lot about it as we landed at DFW airport and the whole back of the plane erupted in cheers and cries and the sounds of African joy cries. I said a silent pray-er and thanked God for bringing them to safety and asked his protection as they adapt to a life in the US, a new life that we can’t even begin to imagine. Children of God welcome home…

As I waited for my turn to come off the plane I was reminded of a story I was told by my Nuer language teacher here in the US. She described her first days in the US…”We were living in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. They came one night and took me away and put me on an airplane. I didn’t know what it was. I landed in this other place full of lights and they put us on a bigger plane. We landed in Dallas where I was met by a single Pakistani man. He put me in a car and took me to a big box, with a lot of doors. We went into one of the boxes and he hit a stick on the wall and the candles lit themselves. Next he took me into another room that had two boxes in it. He opened one and showed me a small white box and told me it was my cow. Then he showed me the box next to it that had little round things on it and he told me that was my fire. And then he left” . That was a nineteen year old girl’s introduction to the US. I prayed that their introduction to life in the US is a little better. Children of God welcome home…

On Sunday, I was able to visit the two churches I call home. Needless to say, there were many surprised faces that day, including two very surprised pastors. It was nice to be surrounded by familiar rituals and routines after so much change during the last few months. I admit I was a little teary as the Means of Grace were presented and the familiar words, “The word of life” as the Bible was placed on the alter, “the font of identity” as the water was poured from the pitcher into the baptismal font, and “The cup of salvation, Children of God, welcome home” as the chalice was placed on the table. Greg made the announcement that I was there, and the whole church erupted in cheers and applause. I sat surrounded by the love and support of my church family, not once, but twice that day. I sat surrounded by people who love and support me. And I was full of gratitude for each and every one of you who surround me with your love and support and who have joined in this journey.

May you find the peace of Christ as you hear the words “Children of God, welcome home” Peace be with you Sharon
