WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
EVALUATION QUESTION 4
How I Researched My Target audienceI researched my audience in many ways:
Analysing advertisements for a sci-fi genre (eg posters, websites)
Public Feedback
Research on surveys
Analysed other sci-fi film openings
AdvertisementsAdvertisements on websites and posters were very good to gain inspiration from, and definitely expanded our outlook on creating a Science Fiction opening. We looked at their themes and how they used conventions to further enhance the impact on their target audience.
I researched many sci-fi films to gain a wide ranged list of how to target an audience. However, from research most films had a 15+ age restriction. This implies that they are aimed for a adult audience.

Using Social MediaSocial Media was a great part in knowing the interests of people and why they prefer different film genres. Overall, I gained that a male audience preferred a sci-fi film rather than females.
Public Views
Mostly males preferred the sci-fi genre because they liked the unpredictable and more action experience.
Whereas, females preferred the rom-com genre for the light humour and happy endings. Furthermore, someone commented ‘I can kind of relate to the storylines of some rom-com films’, which again reinforces the femininity of rom-com films.

Surveys
Using SurveysThis was hugely important in knowing my audience. Thousands of people participated which gave a more realistic result in the audiences interest. This was the main focus, when creating our audience. It was the main piece of research which I focused on targeting. I think this was key in producing my film as it gave it a purpose to aim at and to answer the brief in linking it to and adult audience.
Overall I gathered that the ideal audience to aim for was an Asian, middle aged male.

Watching Film Openings/Trailers from a Sci-fi GenreWatching film openings help visualise and notice how film producers manipulate the micro elements to link to the relevant genre and audience.
The films studied were all to a sci-fi audience. This was obvious to notice though the heavily edited openings and futuristic title sequences. Meaning I ensured my opening was similar to appeal to the similar audience.
Doing this helped me know the interests and emotions in what the audience like.

Lockout Hunger Games Battleship
Titles from Science Fiction Films seem very dark and suspicious which would appeal to their target audience (middle aged males) from the unpredictability in what happens later in the film. This portrays my resemblance of producing a title similar to Avatar. However, our colour differs due to the potion.
Target Audience – Personal ProfileAudience Profile

Middle Aged (26-40 years)
Gadgets - latest: phones, watches, laptops, tablets
Gaming - Battlefield, Call of Duty, Resistance
Films - Oblivion, Prometheus, War of the Worlds, Star Wars, Battleship, The Hunger GamesSpare Time - spend most time on internet searching YouTube videos, social media, watch television, science enthusiast (creative)Television programs – CSI, Sherlock Homes, Top Gear, BBC News, Gadget Show.
How to Appeal to the Audience ProfileTo appeal to the audience profile I had to try and include many of the aspects: action packed, dangerous, adrenalin scenes, good looking women, fast cars, and unpredictability.
From this research, I targeted to encode these emotions in my opening to link it towards a male audience. Overall, I thought I included many of the emotions, mainly I used fast paced editing to add excitement, which was reinforced by the soundtrack. I think relating my film towards this profile went well, however improvements could have been made, in have a female character, and more danger in the interrogation scene.
