Evaluation part 2How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Teaser trailers & their posters I wanted to specifically look at successful

teasers trailers of films and compare them with their posters. Through looking at both the teaser and the poster I wanted to establish and link the ways in which could have made it successful. Including looking at the codes and conventions used etc.

I believe looking and researching real media text would enable us to create a poster that is successful. Because we can see and distinguish the methods used, thus taking on the ideas. By doing this I think that our magazine and poster can work and link together better to promote our media product.

Page 3: Evaluation part 2

First film – Carrie (2013)

Extreme close up of protagonist face. Gains recognition due to the ending scene of the teaser. Similar scenes to teaser at the end when we see her in blood walking towards camera.

There are two movie posters for this film, the first one has no film no or any information whilst the second has more text written

Blood – red, links to the horror genre instantly

Tag line covering her face. Big and simplistic

‘coming soon’ creates anticipation

Contrast between the blood and her pale face and pale lips. Can represent the evil and innocent pale girl.

Facial expression/action– eyes not completely open slightly looking upwards. And lips partially open, which looks like a gasp. Can emphasise the young female character being evil/possesed through her face.

The tag line – speaks directly to audience since it is a command rather than telling information

Blood on one eye whilst none on the other can represent good vs evil. Linking to genre and story of the movie

The imagery used here presents a haunting image that will likely stay in peoples minds.

Follows generic horror films of a girl being the protagonist. Horror/thriller usually have female protagonists since they play the role damsel in distress or are the haunted young girl. She's covered in blood can speak for it self once seeing it.

Intriguing unique photo doesn’t show her complete face. Leaving audience curious. Furthermore does not have any text written about director or casts adds on to the mysteriousness. Linking to the portrayal of the upcoming events in the film. Everything is unknown!

Carrie (2013) – part 2 Link to teaser trailer

Strong presence of the color red. Also seen in previous poster and blood in teaser links in

Slogan/tagline across her face under her eyes. Unusual and eye catching because its center of attention

Intense tag line creates a strong imagery. Mentioning of god can cause audience to link to the opposite binary e.g devil/evil. Cleverly giving audience a glimpse of movies story focus.

Imagery – crack in her face and one eye red can suggests broken character or red eye even suggest evil character. Both leave audience perhaps curious and give people a understanding of the character from seeing these factors.

Bold red title. Eye catching and intense.

Cast names in white. Stands out from the dark and red theme of poster. It seems normalized compared to the rest. Draws attention to the actors. Thus their fans can be attracted due to their previous works etc.

Carrie: teaser trailer in comparison to posters

Analyzing Carrie film poster and teaser trailer I can see there is a definite link to both

The GIF I made shows the scenes from the teaser I think reflects in the posters the most

The first scene shows a fire. The color red is prominent from the very start of the teaser. This is represented by the red blood and written text seen in the posters. The similarities and consistency helps and creates a joint effect to relate the two together and effectively promote them to the audience who sees and has viewed the tease

The teaser highlights the casts and film name using white making it stand out. This similar to the second teaser with the written information text.

Teaser shows protagonist standing in dark road covered in blood. It then zooms into her face full of blood dripping. This image is used in both film posters. The continuous image means the poster is effective in reflecting the teaser.

The film title is shown in white with blood dripping and suddenly soaking the title ‘Carrie’ This portrays the supernatural elements and horror genre. Similarly the posters use dripping blood to associate itself with the teaser and the genre

Her extreme close up and strong facial expression is prominent feature in all posters and teaser. This can be to draw in attention and help people make the link between the trailer and the posters they will see around

Page 7: Evaluation part 2

Second film – the roommate

Link to teaser trailer

Tagline – instantly gets people thinking due to it being a question and stating a fact.

Blurred surroundings and focus on protagonists. Emphasizes the role of the girl and also draws attention. People are able to identify and link back to teaser.

Includes relevant information, e.g release date and casts names. Can draw in fans of the actors. The date creates anticipation for the film.

The setting – the campus setting with the green scenery and students/people (busy all around her) is the same scene shown in the trailer. This enhances the visual created by its movie title and tagline and creates a stronger link between poster, teaser, film location and character.

Red bold fonts. The title stands out compared to the blurred slightly dark background. The bigger size and capital letters used on the word ‘roommate’ draws further attention to it. Since the film is about a roommate. Eye catching bold color should attract attention from people.

Page 8: Evaluation part 2

Continued…Her body language and visible smirk is prominent feature in both the poster and the trailer. Similar scenes in the trailer show her with similar facial expression and even in the same standing position, which looks stiff.

Usage of facts in both the poster as the tag line and some black out shots in the trailer with facts about college life in America speaks directly to target audience. (young adults or teens). Can entice and draw in the audience they are looking for.

The facial expression can leave people puzzled and interested in the characters unique presence.

The gloomy dark blue sky and dark trees behind her can represent the darkness. Also foreshadowing upcoming events or premise of storyline

The protagonist standing in isolation in the poster can translate to her characters nature/personality seen in teaser.

Page 9: Evaluation part 2

The research Even though both films may not be the

exact genre that we are doing there are some elements which are similar. From the the films teaser trailer and the films posters I can see how well they’ve worked together. Thus making our transition from teaser to poster a more thoughtful one. Looking and researching from real media products and the links they’ve made from teaser to poster is really inspiring. Especially seeing their creative ideas to make the poster come to life and link in with the teaser trailer.

Our poster for Diamond Rush

Dark background-Portrays our dark premise and foreshadows the upcoming events in the film. And events seen in end of teaser trailer.

The 5 star ratings are white and bold in contrast to the black background. Can draw attention and let people know of the good reviews without having to actually read it. It is a rating from film magazines thus can leave a good impression on public to want to watch the film more.

The release date is yet to be set, but following other real media posters the written text ‘coming soon’ generates anticipation and awareness

The review includes written words which states the film is ‘mind-blowingly suspenseful 'can raise expectation of the film thus audience may be more likely to go see it

Actors names are present at the top of the poster. Thus it is clearly visible to enable the audience to be attracted. Because actors attachment to a project are possible reasons why someone will go watch a film

The title is prominent and shown directly in the middle of the poster across her forehead. Gaining attention due to its size and white bold color in contrast to the dark violet and black. Instantly when reading the title people can link it to the title of the teaser trailerThe tagline – finders keepers is intriguing because it’s a common phrase in the English language. Hopefully people will be drawn and find it clever due to the premise of the story in teaser trailer. The tagline is simple & short thus easy to remember

Information at the bottom of the poster includes director and distributer/production company. The logo can give information fast and pull in fans of WB or of the director.

The colors which are present include violet/purple, black and white. These colors are simple and do not distract audience. The consistent dark colors reflect the events in the teaser and story premise

Page 11: Evaluation part 2

The poster and its relations to the teaser trailer

The photo used in the film poster is shot during a scene shown at the end of the teaser. This directly links and hopefully helps promote the link between both media products due to familiar scene.

Link to our teaser trailer here

The purple lit face can help audience identify that she is not in fact your normal every day girl. The fact that her face is shown in a abnormal color to skin tones, can be used to symbolize the unusual events she will go through or how different she is after the events.

The dark background is seen numerous times in the teaser, once when she is sitting with the diamonds in her hands and lastly at the very end when she looks into the camera. This can add to the thriller/horror element

Page 12: Evaluation part 2

Successfulness of poster A poster is to help promote and sell the film in

addition to the trailer. In my opinion we are successful in doing so for numerous reasons.

1. We followed the codes and conventions of a movie poster. This includes the written factors. For example the actors names running across the poster. Is generic and almost always present in real media products. However helpful to promote actors who can attract people due to their star status/reputation.

2. Able to attract numerous different groups of people. This includes fans of the actors, fans of the director, people who are influenced by film magazines and those who just simply enjoyed the teaser/sees the poster.

3. Offers many distinctive features which are common in real media posters which are successful. For example tagline is simple, clear and interesting. Using bold titles to attract attention. Lastly represents the film through the colors and atmosphere.

Page 13: Evaluation part 2

Magazine cover The magazine cover is the stage which

promotes the upcoming movie to readers in a more direct/personal way.

I analyzed empire magazine covers before I started creating ours. This helped remind me specifically see elements which made the cover good. I chose empire because it is England’s leading film magazine

Page 14: Evaluation part 2

Empire magazineTitle – huge and bold ‘empire

Image of main character on the front

Name of film. Bold and in a color that stands out.

Name of actor to promote

Others features mentioned

Bar code and release date

Extra film reviews and features etc.

Special previews and posters/freebies

Page 15: Evaluation part 2

Our magazine coverBig bold red title. Attractive and in capital letters

Cost is mentioned and release date

Includes special of other films and actors. Draws in fans.

Picture of diamond in relation to the film title and object from teaser

Photo of leading star of film, seen in poster and teaser.

Name of actor ‘Natasha’

Mentions other contents inside magazine

Includes specials of other movies

Black background, exact same to poster and can represent teaser theme

Bar code Picture of another film – the hobbit can influence readers to also buy it and banner of twilight saga

Diamond rush is in a edgy font. Readable but also can reflect mysteriousness of storyline. Stands out more in comparison to the other objects on cover

Page 16: Evaluation part 2

Effectiveness of magazine cover I think it is effective because we were able to represent it well

with the continuous use of Natasha’s picture to create a synergy between all three media products.

Making her face recognizable, which could ultimately be a effective marketing strategy

We used the conventions of a magazine cover for our magazine for example using pictures of films/celebrities, subtitles and a big header for magazine title. This gives the audience a real reason to buy the magazine and influencing them to do so. The layout represents a real magazine really well.

The black background which is used for the poster is also seen once again for the magazine. It foreshadows the dark events which are portrayed in the teaser. Thus the mysteriousness can intrigue audience.

Page 17: Evaluation part 2

conclusion- I believe our promotion pack and our teaser trailer work well together and the trailer will benefit from the magazine and poster well. Firstly due to the continuous use of the female lead the public or the film audiences should be able to recognize her. Familiarizing themselves with the character can help and build anticipation for the film overall. - Even though both the poster and magazine picture are a photo of the protagonist. I believe the poster represents the film much more than the magazine. Through the poster we were able to portray the presence of supernatural and dark events through the color scheme and usage of a photo from the last scene. This was successful due to her emerging face from the violet. However on the magazine cover in order to keep it sleek and follow codes and conventions I only edited the background black. Which also represents dark/evil but not to the same level as the poster. If I could change anything it would probably to decide on a different photo for the magazine cover. One which tells a story rather than looking like a snap shot. On the other hand her facial expression was quite neutral which could instead add to the mysterious factor.- I believe the combination of the ancillary task and main product will be effective due to its marketability as a whole. Lastly since we continuously looked a real media products to contrast and compare I believe the standards are high and would be quite successful.
