EVALUATION 2: HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT

REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

Page 2: Evaluation 2

Introduction I believe that my magazine represents

similar social groups to magazines like ‘We Love Pop’ and ‘Top of the Pops’. The reason for this is that the topics and cover lines I have included resemble those found in current pop magazines, and ones that really attract a young audience. The image of Olly Murs on the right shows him as being very relaxed as his hands are in his pockets. Also, most music artists on the front of magazines have expensive watches on show for example, but you can’t see this on the picture on the right. This helps the Mainstreamers audience, who live fairly average lives, to relate to the artists on the front of pop magazines like these.

Angle and Shot Type The angle and shot types of the images I have taken are

similar to those found in a typical pop magazine. They are mostly medium close-ups and the people in the images are mainly front facing. The camera is at eye-line also, which allows the audience to feel neither inferior or superior to the artist. If the camera was below the artist and the artist was looking down, it may put the audience off as they may feel intimidated and inferior. However, I have taken a few shots when ‘Daniel Archibold’ is looking up to the camera slightly. This could create a sense of innocence in the audience’s eyes because it makes the artists look younger due to their height in the photo and also a bit vulnerable.

Lighting The lighting for all the original images are similar

because they are inside and the artist is standing in front of a white background. However, the central image on the front cover is slightly brighter which suggests it has been done to really put the person in the fore front of the magazine. A brighter image also creates a more positive mood compared to an image taken outside for example, in which case it would create a negative mood which would potentially divert the audiences attention from the central image.

Costume

The costume for my original images was quite basic with a white T-Shirt and a navy blue jacket over the top. I felt this looked quite Mainstreamer so I purely chose the costume to attract a Mainstreamer audience. I chose to use these colours as they are Wintery colours therefore it will suite the colour scheme on the rest of my magazine.

Facial Expression The facial expressions I used for the original

images weren’t too serious looking as this may discourage a young audience from buying the magazine. The facial expressions need to seem welcoming and quite happy looking as this genre of music is about more positive subjects than negative ones. I also don’t want the artists to look like they should be in an adult magazine and in general, it needs to look appropriate for children to read.

Hair Style I decided to have quite normal hair

styles as I don’t want it too look to over top. Also, if used the wrong hair style for the photo shoot, it may look a bit unprofessional from the audience’s perspective.
