•Distribution is probably the most important part of the film industry•A film distributor is an independent company, a subsidiary company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final agent between a film production company, and a film exhibitor.•In the film business, the term "distribution" refers to the marketing and circulation of movies in theatres, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc.)•Target audience is key and must be kept in mind at all times.•Operates most effectively when vertically integrated with production ,exhibition and exchange.•The phase that makes the profit so it is vital for the film distributor to attract the largest audience possible

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?

CHOSEN DISTRIBUTORVERTIGO FILMS

I have chosen ‘Vertigo Films’ as the media institution that might distribute my media product. Here is a number of reasons to justify my choice :•It is a vertically integrated Finance, Production and Distribution company that was set up in early 2002.

•This is significant , because Vertigo films has more overall control , cost specific control , a competitive focus and an opportunity for differentiation in distributing my media product ‘Checkmate’.

•Vertigo is additionally a British company , which champions the interests of the British and European film industries

•An example of this is it’s creation of PFXE in 2010 , a 3D facility company to use European 3D films like ‘StreetDance 3D’ to rival Hollywood.•My media product may be able to take part in this challenge to American cultural imperialism and support independent British films. ‘Checkmate’ could be converted into 3D to increase our audience and profit.

•My media product is also not a Hollywood Blockbuster film. It is a low budget , independent British film.

•Vertigo films has previously distributed a wide range of similar independent films and successful example of this is ‘Monsters (2010)’.

•The company most likely would support the construction techniques of my media product like it did with the Adobe Photoshop and After Effects utilised by Gareth Edwards in ‘Monsters’.

•I used Final Cut Pro in almost the same way to create specific visual effects in editing.

•By choosing Vertigo for distribution , my media product could help set the example that low budget powerful technologies can be as effective as those used by huge media conglomerates.

•Another reason for the choice of Vertigo is that it has proven itself in creating effective ‘marketing hubs’ evident in the company’s work with ‘Monsters’

•My media product could implement a similar marketing strategy through social networking and viral marketing to create buzz for the release of my film.

•The viral marketing campaign of ‘Monsters’ through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail proved successful in developing a social media campaign for Gareth Edward’s film.

•I could see my media product adopting a marketing system like this through the chosen vertically integrated distributor of Vertigo Films.

•Audience Participation through seeking out the ‘infected zones’ of ‘Monsters’ to gain exclusive prizes could be manipulated to suit my media product as well.

CURZON ON DEMAND•Vertigo Films has an established link with the Curzon cinema chain

•Although my media product is specifically targeted at an audience of 15-30 years old , Curzon could open up my media product to a niche specialist audience.

•The low budget independent aspect to my media product could possibly appeal to this sort of audience

•My media product could exploit the technology of the Curzon on-demand service to perhaps to have a theatrical release and a video on demand online release at the same time

•My media product would therefore take part in the changing distribution process and the way in which audiences consume media products.

•I purposely placed a indent of the Vertigo Films logo ,at the start of my media product, to give the audience a clear sense of the film’s institution.
