There are roughly 10,000 people using guide dogs in the United States and Canada. Guide dogs enhance mobility of people with visual impairments. Bonding between the user and the guide dog is very important in the relationship. When travelling, guide dogs communicate with their owners via the harness. A guide dog harness is essential for a dog to let their owner know about potential danger by stopping or pulling away, and it is also important for the user to know exactly where the dog is going.

Taking the insights I gained from the research to the ideation stage, I focused on developing a guide dog harness that creates a better experience for both the user and the Guide Dog. I then took the concepts back to the users and learned that they preferred the adjustable handle, one-handed buckle, and cane/handle ideas.

When conducting empathy modeling research, I learned that users tend to use the surface of the bumper protector to support heavy items when transporting objects from a car trunk to a dolly. After looking at the lifting devices that are currently on the market, I decided to focus on designing a device that creates a better moving experience, which can also be stored in a regular-sized car trunk.

Through market research, it was found that the greatest area of opportunity was a device that could perform both moving and lifting tasks while being foldable. I then focused on developing a device that improves the experience of loading and moving heavy items, particularly on climbing stairs and loading items from a car trunk.

In the ideation stage, we focused on solving the problems of tight space, air flow, and storage for items, we then created a list of Program Requirements, including light source, air flow, reduce smell, water/sand proof, spacious experience, easy to assemble, and etc. From there, we went from function to aesthetic aspect of the design as well as considering the shipping space of our portable bathrooms.
