3.1 Developing an Argument
A vital component of the planning stage is knowing what you want to say about the essay topic. This is called an
argument or a line of reasoning . It is a position or an attitude you have decided to take towards the topic being
explored. Planning your essay will help ensure that the line of reasoning is consistent throughout your work and that
you are not contradicting yourself!
Here is an example of a line of reasoning (an argument) for an essay in human behaviour. The recording lasts
approximately 6 mins.

4 Structuring an Essay
Good essays have a clear, linear structure. They always start with an introduction and finish with a conclusion. The part
in between is referred to as the 'body' of the text. In an academic essay, it is made up of the key points you want to
make about your assignment. Good essays are characterised by distinct paragraphs which flow well. There is a sense of
unity and completeness to the text.

5 How do I organize ideas in the body of the essay?
It is important to arrange your thoughts into clear and distinct paragraphs. Each paragraph will have a key or central
idea that it develops before moving on to the next paragraph with a related but different central or key idea. The
sentence that indicates this 'key idea' is called a topic sentence (each paragraph MUST contain a topic sentence).Click

5.1 What makes a good paragraph?
All good paragraphs in academic writing have a topic sentence followed by supporting sentences that develop the key
idea or argument discussed in that paragraph. It is important that paragraphs focus on only one idea/issue and that the
supporting sentences do the job of convincing the reader of this key point. Click here to see what I mean. This
recording lasts approximately 3 mins.
